The focus in the extensive menu is on traditional pub favourites, done to a very good standard. There were a lot of families eating on our visit, including at least three birthday celebrations. Most options come with chips (even the curry and chilli options come with rice and chips - popular in South Wales. But you can ask for rice only). At first sight, prices might seem a little high for the area - £15 and upwards for mains - but not when you see the portions! We saw a number of people through the evening leaving with a doggy bag, so clearly they're used to that. We had the Mediterranean tart with sauté potatoes and fresh vegetables, served with a tomato and basil sauce with a salad garnish on the side £15; and the 12 oz gammon steak with an egg (with pineapple is the alternative) so that a tomato mushroom and chips (£17). Both are very good and, as anticipated, the portions were generous. (We were glad that we had not had starters, but others tucked in happily) Service was extremely good throughout: particularly so at the outset, when we were shown to our table, which was next to 2 large parties. We asked if we could move to somewhere a bit quieter, and they were very willing to accommodate us. Thereafter, service was very attentive from the plethora of staff. The owner also came over a couple of times to check that everything was alright. They have a full bar available, with a reasonably extensive wine list. Our meal of two mains, two drinks, and service, came to £45, which we thought was very reasonable in the circumstances. Recommended if in the area. There is a free car park at the rear of the property.

This place is perfect for family and friends as they have two separate and large gardens, with one especially designed for kids. Never had such tasty salmon. Only the seaweed salad was bland. I would have served it with wacame or something. They gave us the tapa for free bc we couldnt have pie. For tourists this is in an ideal location for visiting Abergavenny, Blaenavon and most of the industrial heritage of Wales and the South West. If you know this area it has everything from historic interest to outward bound activities, scenery and it's oly 40 minutes from Cardiff if you need some serious retail therapy, (also the smaller Festival Park Outlet Village just 15 minutes away). Friendly landlord and landlady who will help with everything from a cot to booking tickets for the Theatre in Abergavenny, I can't recommend it highly enough. Free Car Parking, good links to trains and roads about an hour from Cardiff Wales Airport. Ideal place to stay during the food festival as it's walkable, but not in the expensive zone.

It's a traditional English pub with plenty of seating and a good assortment of locally-sourced food options. When I asked about my gluten allergy, they did everything possible to make sure my meal didn't contain gluten. They even had gluten-free bread! All the food was delightful, and the staff were amazing. Even the owner of the pub waited on us and chatted with us for a bit. Historically, this pub has been around for hundreds of years. Recently, the pub faced closure, but the community was able to raise the money to keep the pub from closing. Thousands of pounds raised in 48 hours! Impressive. Now the pub is owned by the village, and is open to the public. If you're in the area, definitely drop by for some delightful food, drink and friendly service.

It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint.
