Food smashed into the dirty carpet, menus smeared with grease, slimy handprints on every glass and plastic surface. Is the place cleaned by toddlers?! If the missed health standards aren't enough to deter people (wish I'd read those beforehand), the layers of grime should be a red flag. If that's what customers are seeing, imagine the kitchen. Also, the food was bad. Like everything. Grisly gnarled chicken, inedible, dry cornbread, and nasty mac and cheese. I didn't try anything else because it was so gross. My family members also hated their food. Staff waited until the last minute to refill things as it seemed like someone is opting to cut some sharp corners. Again, I felt bad for everyone working there. It seemed busy enough to turn a profit, yet there was something depressing about the vibe. I came here last year with my dad, and it wasn't like this, so it was disappointing. We were relieved to get out for under $100, but it was just nightmare fuel. Not worth it. Owners need to be more involved in operations here.

As soon as I heard that, I knew we were in for a treat! Being welcomed in before even arriving is just hospitality at its finest. Onto the food. I ordered the Snow Crab shilah, and let me tell y'all, I've dreamt about it ever since. The flavors in every bite were incredible; I was so full after eating half, but I couldn't put it down it was THAT GOOD! Oh, and don't skip out on their lemonades, especially the Blue Mermaid! I'll be counting the days until I'm able to go back. The ladies I talked to there were lovely, the food incredible and deserving of every recognition. If you're in the area, check it out. If I lived closer, I'd be there near daily. 10/10, highly recommend!

Lol) They definitely came through for me today! Very friendly Johnny and his restaurant have earned 5 stars for the delicious food, the low prices, the excellent service, & the convenience of this location (inside a Texaco). Approximately two years ago this soul food eatery was opened in honor of the family's Mississippi matriarch, Miss Edna. She is 85 years old, and has always cooked with love. She was #7 of thirteen children. You'll find her photo on the wall behind the counter. Breakfast is available from 6 AM - 11 AM Monday thru Friday. (I've heard it's excellent.) Weekday lunch is from 11 AM - 2 PM. Salads, sandwiches, & burgers are offered. The menu is posted on a whiteboard on the wall. Saturday hours are 7 AM -11 AM for breakfast & 11 AM - 2 PM for lunch. (*All hours are temporary due to Coronavirus fears*) Each day the LUNCH BUFFET changes. Today I had my choice of barbecue chicken or roasted pork, along w/ sides. To avoid carbs, I ordered a double heaping of cabbage to accompany my chicken legs. My food was delicious! I did see mac & cheese, rice, gravy, & a few other buffet offerings. I was a tad disappointed that there were no greens available, but they're offered on other days. That gives me an excuse to return:) This is definitely a locally owned business that is worthy of patronage. The business's Facebook page reads, Miss Edna "taught us how to love, respect, be kind, generous, and have faith in the Lord. We take pride in giving the world a taste of her love." Amen, Miss Edna & Johnny! And thank you both!

As we approached, we noticed a big sign that said "Atwater's coming soon", two men out front that appeared to be detailing their car, and old chairs airing in the parking lot. While I was still waiting at the light, one of the men asked me how much I wanted for my car, and I told him it wasn't for sale. He said, "Come in, let me get it!" I asked him if they were open, and he said, "Yes! We're open! I'm an Atwater, and he's an Atwater!" The light turned green, and we beat a hasty retreat. I guess this is less of a restaurant review, and more of a cautionary tale. It would appear that the great Atwater's may not yet be ready to open for business.

I look at the menu board and they were featuring Smoked Chicken, Smoked Ribs, Fried Chicken, Cabbage, Rice, Mac n Cheese and Collards. I ordered Fried Chicken (thinking how can I go wrong with this Soul Food staple in a soul food joint, right?), cabbage and Mac-n-cheese. The fried chicken had obviously been cooked the day before and kept warm in an oven, the cabbage was dried out n so was the Mac-n-cheese. An attempt had been made to sprinkle shredded cheese on the serving of Mac-n-cheese and it to was dried out in an oven trying to keep it warm. I am a cook so I know old food when I taste it. I ordered 3 Obama Crunch cookies n u guessed it...they were old and dried out. I don't know how they can in good conscience call themselves " the best soul food". What a waste of $14.00. The cashier greeted my husband and I when we walked in but unfortunately she cannot count money. Mgmt may want to make sure the person at the counter knows what is on the menu for the day, know the ingredients in the cookies and know how to correctly ring up an order and count back the customer's change. The little girl working behind the counter was the best part of my experience. She corrected the woman ringing up my order, she knew the ingredients in the cookies and she was polite. I can go to Church's or Popeye's Chicken, spend $14 and come out more satisfied. Do yourself a favor and save yourself frustration and money and go elsewhere. The best part of my experience was the young girl behind the counter. She knew how to ring the food, knew the ingredients and had good manners. You got me this time Atwaters but NEVER again.

Neither one of us had been here before but I saw it had very good reviews on Google. We both got the chicken dinner with different sides. He had the Mac and cheese and I had mashed potatoes since they were out of candied yams. We also both had yellow rice and collard greens. We also shared honey cornbread and hush puppies. Everything was VERY good!! There were a few downsides. We came on a Sunday evening and most of the food was sold out. The women who took our order said Sundays are also busy so we notated that for next time. The wait time is very long since the staff is limited. That day it looked like there were 2 or 3 people working. Lastly, I ordered a lemon poundcake and when I got home, it wasn't in the bag. I was pretty upset.
