Came in here about a month ago to buy a matcha bowl and whisk and ended up staying for 3 hours talking with Dane and Ryan. Great experience, purchased a beautiful scroll from them and have plans to return for other items. Majorly underrated shop if you're in the market for Japanese antiques and artifacts. This was a pleasant surprise to find such a large quantity of all types of Japanese antiques so close to where I live. This is a large high ceiling warehouse where everything is presented and organized so well that you can see and appreciate the beauty of these old antiques. They have everything from tansus, kimonos, fabrics, ceramics, tea ceremony items, vintage tools, block prints, inros, one of a kind vintage wood store signs, small accessory items and much much more. Brousing through the aisles of Shibui items is fun as I see items I have never seen before in either other shops or even Japan. Dane is very knowledgeable and it's amazing how much I learn when I have a question. His prices are very fair considering the age , rarity and quality of each one of a kind piece. Dane is so helpful and informative. We felt like we had a private tour of a Japanese museum. He has beautiful antiques. Bought two sets of garden gates for a very reasonable price. Highly suggest stopping in, if not to buy something, just to appreciate the beautiful items from Japan, centuries old. read more

The owner is an expert in too many different Japanese arts and history to list them (but they include Japanese furniture, clothes, tea ware etc). Being in his warehouse is like being in Japan. Prices are more interesting than going to Japan, as well as being able to learn about everything. This is an institution not to be missed. Anyone interested in adding some Japanese decoration to their home or wearing traditional clothes to should come and get at least something here. read more

An incredible place for most things Japanese. Tansu chests, books, textiles and treasures. I have never seen a resource with the breadth of merchandise. Dane, The owner, is a walking library of historical use and detail. This store is fantastic! Everytime I walk in the door, I find something interesting to purchase for my home, or as a gift. Shibui is known for their expertise in antique and vintage tansu (hand-made Japanese cabinets/furniture). In fact the owner, Dane Owen, literally wrote the book on the subject. He personally selects each piece in Japan, and then ships them home - where he restores them. The store smells of wood, wax and a hint of incense. The furniture is all for sale, but every drawer and shelf is filled with other beatuiful antique and vintage things from Japan. Textiles. Ceramics. Tools. Photography. Fireman's coats and tools. Weapons. Iron pots and tea kettles. Tea ware. Stone garden lanterns. Scrolls. Screens. Architectural elements. And even some modern Japanese items inspired by the patterns and colors of their antique counterparts. Go now. Came here with my mother to get a price check on a Sake container on 9/28 at around 6:30pm. When we walked in there were two men in the store. One of them was probably in his mid/late 20's and he was sitting down on his Apple laptop and playing with his dog when we walked in. Neither my mom or myself thought he worked there because he didn't pay any mind to us until a group of three customers came in and he raised his head to look over us as if we weren't even there and welcomed the new customers. I've never been treated like that while walking in a store. It might be because my mom is hispanic and has an accent when trying to speak English. The reason why i say that is because the people that walked in behind us were of a lighter skin color. Once I realized he works there I got a little upset but still kept my cool and asked this guy if I can get a price check on an item and he said just grab a card by the door.. LUCKILY the other gentleman in the store who was probably in his early 40's called us over and asked if we had the item on us. This man treated us with respect, gave us a brief background on what we had in our hands, gave us a price approximation and explained why. Now I rarely leave reviews unless the service is unforgettable, whether good or bad. Unfortunately this experience was unforgettable because it's the first time I face a case of racism. I've worked in customer service for about 4 years. I hate throwing the "race card" around and I actually have never experienced something like this because I don't look hispanic but I can honestly say this Caucasian man in his mid/late 20's displayed a level of disrespect and racism that isn't tolerated by any customer. Everyone has "bad days" and I understand that, but I saw another bad review complaining about the same employee so I felt like I needed to say something. Thank you to the older gentleman though, I highly appreciate the information and you being able to step up and take control. read more

Some time ago I bought two large antiques from Shibui for my Restaurant in West Chelsea. This review was certainly overlooked on my end since my purchase. Dane's hand curated selection of Japanese antiques is the best available in New York, especially considering his price points. His team has always been professional and respectful whether they new of my purchase or not. I don't make it to Dumbo often, but when I do I always make it a point to visit for sources of inspiration, with the intention or purchasing or not, I have never felt anything but comfortable in this store. It is small and dark and the team is small, so don't feel slided if someone doesn't rush up to you as if you are in a Sephora store, thats not the point here. I would highly recommend Shibui to all my friends especially those who appreciate the antiques I have featured in my Restaurant. read more

I just happened to walk in this hidden gem last month! I felt as if I was traveling Japan. I bought a piece of pretty kimono with a reasonable price. I really enjoyed conversations with all the staff there. I'm kind of surprised to find negative comments on Yelp because my experience was nothing but awesome. That's why I decided to leave my first comments here. A young guy (with a cute puppy) showed me how to wear kimono in a modern way so that I cam match kimono with my daily clothes. That was very fun and his advice was helpful. And Dane, the owner, was so knowledgeable that he explained differences in​ fabrics and patterns. Interesting store selling reasonably priced Japanese antiques with TERRIBLE service. My shopping experience was definitely tainted by the rude service I both witnessed and experienced at this store. One of the sales associates/pillow designers was particularly bad. For identification sake, he was in his late-twenties/early thirties, Caucasian, and owned one of the store's dogs. At one point, I overheard him trash-talking his own customers and commenting on their low intelligence. In addition, he refused to answer my questions and told me to ask someone else because he didn't know the answer and was too busy playing with his own dog to ask his co-worker himself. Dude, you're in the retail industry! Customer service is everything in this retail economy where brick-and-mortar stores are closing by the hundreds every day. Thankfully, the other sales associate that I dealt with was very friendly and helpful. This store is worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood but be prepared for subpar service. read more

Stumbled upon this shop by accident and found some amazing Japanese Antiques. Vintage pieces, as well as new. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly. This shop has something for everyone in most every price range. I could not leave empty-handed - purchase a Japanese bronze geisha mirror- a thing of beauty! I can wait till it arrives so I can display at home! A little history: (This bronze mirror was found in the 'mirror-pool' at the shrine on Mount Haguro, where it was thrown, along with hundreds of other mirrors, as an offering. The back is decorated with two dancing cranes - symbols of long life and marital fidelity in Japan. The other side is undecorated and was polished to create a reflective surface. Mirrors were first imported from China in AD 300. They were associated with the sun-goddess Amaterasu, ancestress of the Japanese emperors, because of their ability to reflect light) SO HAPPY!. read more
