Great paint lasts, holds up and doesn't fade. Douglas and Sons ONLY sells great paint. My family and I have been shopping at Douglas and Sons for years and years. There prices are a little higher than at other places, but I only get good products, and I also get fantastic services. For instance, when I was remodeling my daughters bedroom, and we took down the wallpaper, and washed the walls and started painting... after about 20 minutes my paint started to bubble! I was stunned, shocked and nervous, I had never seen such a thing. I knew when I called Douglas and Sons they would know... and after talking to one of their highly talented employees they suspected there was a tiny bit of wallpapers blue in the low spots on my plastered walls. When I went in to see what could be done the owner saw me, asked about my problem, showed real concern, and let me know he had called the manufacturer just to verify there opinion. My solution? easy... a little primer first... and my problem went away. The color looks amazing and my girls are super happy. I would never expect to get that kind of assuredness, care and determination from a "Big Box Store"... Douglas and Sons always takes care of me and I appreciate that greatly.

In 2012 our dog knocked over a lamp and gouged the wall beside the couch, we said we'd live with it until we decided to repaint. Fast forward to November 2025. We had to repair around a window. My husband decided we might as well repair the wall while we are at it. Two different colors. We had both colors in the basement. The color from the lamp damage he had mixed up in a small bottle and he thought this is never going to work. Both are painted and our house looks brand new. When we do decide to paint the house again I will once more be traveling to the Sherwin-Williams store on M-43 in Kalamazoo.

They carry the best brands: Benjamin Moore, Graham and California Frescoat. If you follow the coverage of paint in Consumer Reports, California was the highest rated brand last year, and Bennie Moore is always close to the top. They can make your paint job last 10 years, rather than the standard five to seven years. The staff knows a lot about paint. They can tell you what kind to use and how to put it on. They'll warn you about problems you might encounter with the preparation and painting, if you can manage to get to the store when they are not too busy and talk to them about your project. They have a great selection of tools and supplies, and everything is well organized. I never end up wandering around wishing I could find the right thing, which does happen at Lowe's. Yes, the paint sells for $30 to $65 and per gallon, but that's what real paint costs. You can get paint for as little as $16 per gallon at Lowe's, but I wouldn't use their paint outdoors; indoors it can probably hold because it doesn't have to stand up to the weather. Anderson's also has a store on Stadium Boulevard, north of Stadium and Liberty, and that's the store I've been using since they closed the downtown store. But I have been into the Washtenaw store a couple of times and the staff is every bit as good as the other store. They did a good job putting together orders for different kinds of paint, including a couple of tough custom matches.
