There is a reason that this place is such an institution in Sewanee- they have the best burger in town and cheap draft beer! Took my girlfriend there on our first date, had some great times over the years, and the food never disappoints. After a long mountain bike ride on the Perimeter Trail we were looking forward to dinner. Shenanigans was kind of dirty and the staff were discombobulated and disorganized. We had the grilled turkey sandwich, fries and fried zucchini. The sandwich was good but the fries were terrible undercooked and the zucchini over cooked. I've been coming to Shenanigans since 1986 and have seen it go through its various iterations. Before it shut down it had lost a lot of its rustic mountain charm by trying to be more than what it set out to be: a local confluence on the mountain to meet up, eat great food and enjoy a cold beer on a hot humid day. It was never a spot you needed to dress up for, t-shirts and a bathing suit, still wet from swimming at a local swimming hole were and still are appropriate attire. When I saw it had shut down I was heart broken since there are very few establishments on the mountain that have survived the financial struggles of life on Monteagle. That being said, it has reopened and returned to its former glory. It is an establishment in the community and a must-visit restaurant for anyone passing through Sewanee. read more

Very unique place with delicious baked sourdough bread instead of buns for their burgers. Beef is local, grass fed and hormone free which I definitely wasn't expecting. Great food and very reasonable prices! Would go back! read more

We drove 2 hours to eat at this highly recommended restaurant and they were not even open when we got there!!!! The sign on the door said they opened at 11. There were at least 8 customers waiting outside to eat and they all went somewhere else. The restaurant lost a lot money by not being open read more

Great atmosphere and extensive menu option for sandwiches, salads and deserts. The draft beer options are fantastic as well with some nice regional options. The appear to have live music frequently as well. I would happily return here. read more

With a Sewanee veteran for the weekend, who informed me that Shenanigan's is a local institution and I could not have described it better myself. This little blue house represents the microcosm of liberal life this small mountain town enjoys. The food was bar food but, it was excellent. I had the cheeseburger and fried dill pickles after a couple of hikes on some mountain trails. My fiancé had the house made pizza. Both meals were impeccable! They have tons of craft beer on tap but, if that's not your thing-your run of the mill domestics are available. The service was typical for your small town joints; friendly smiling faces that engage in conversation. We enjoyed of beers and simmered in the local color. As a side note, I heard they are soon to start live music in the upstairs. I can't wait for my next trip to the mountain to get a load of that! read more

We usually eat at Julia's when we visit Sewanee. I wish we had. This place messed up our order, half our order took 15 - 20 minutes longer and it was loud and crowded with beer drinking students. Not enjoyable at all. Update: Before we left they made right with our order and the large group of students left, so our meal ended better than it started. read more

Last night, we were almost to Nashville, after driving from Charleston, SC, and started to get hungry, but we didn't want a chain restaurant. After looking around, we came across this place and so glad we found it. The atmosphere was that of a small family restaurant mixed with the vibes of a local pub, and the food was amazing. While the pizza toppings were a bit pricey, the pizza and staff were great. I will definitely be sure that I take this route to Nashville in the future that I'll always have a place to stop for a bite to eat near the end of the drive. read more

Ordered a grill cheese. It was the worst one I have ever had. Half dollar circle of some kind of grease in the center of the bread. Definitely not real butter. The rest was dried out and hard with cheese not melted. Interior of restaurant was cute. Cashier for some bizarre reason informed us she had to wash her hands. Wont be back. read more

Having gone to school up there, I was distressed to hear Shenanigan's had closed -- and delighted to hear that it had reopened. I stopped by last week, and the new Shenanigan's is carrying on the traditions of the old Shenanigan's: A relaxed, comfortable atmosphere and superb sandwiches at a very reasonable price. I was disappointed that there was no hot cider -- you guys really need to fix that, you know! Hot cider at Shenanigan's in the winter was a staple -- but I'm very grateful to the folks who re-opened the doors. read more

Once the grill shuts down from 2-5, a very limited menu failed to inspire, although the college atmosphere, carved wooden tables and Neil Young in the background were enjoyable. I was here to visit the college campus but this restaurant was really the only thing worth the trip. I got the buffalo chicken salad and it was spectacular. The chicken was super flavorful. I usually don't get a salad as a meal because it's not usually anything to write home about. But that could not be any further from the truth when it came to salad. The other person with me got the burger and it was just as delicious. The fried cheese sticks were great too. Good atmosphere. Nice people. Love it. read more

I am quite frankly annoyed and disappointed in Shenanigans this time. I ordered a simple cool cucumber bagel online and went to pick it up at the time the website gave me, yet when I showed up they had no orders ready. When I asked them to check on mine, they said they had not received it. Thankfully, they started making it when i arrived. However, i had to wait another 35 minutes for my vegetarian cold bagel! My friend and I were the only patrons in the store, yet we both ended up waiting over an hour for our food. Also, only one of the employees was wearing a mask, and there is a strict mask directive in our town and I am shocked that Shenanigans isn't following it. We also had an employee, unmasked, walk up to our table and get quite close to us to ask us a question, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I don't recommend ordering from Shenanigans until they have their whole situation figured out. read more

Came for lunch after church. Moderately filled dining area, and a group of about 15 was in front of us. They were seated and eating in about 10 minutes. We were seated and eating about 3 minutes after them. Service with SMILES!! Nice job!!! Food was hot and fresh!! Meat on my burger was tender and texture was perfect. Has some egg in it I believe. Cheese choices were good too. If you're not a fan of ciabatta (as I'm not), tell them. Besides that, still a great burger. Nice little place. read more

Shenanigans has re-opened and it's night and day from its previous iteration. A little background-we frequently travel south for business and pleasure, and make a point of staying in the beautiful little country village of Sewanee. When we were there three years ago, we were profoundly disappointed in Shenanigans. The owners at the time had little idea as to how to run a restaurant, and it showed: indifferent service combined with mediocre food. We left with a bad taste in our mouths. When we returned a year later, the restaurant was closed. You can imagine our surprise when, on our most recent visit, we found Shenanigans open, under new, young and energetic owners. It's a completely different place. To begin with, Shenanigans is a strange (but wonderful) amalgam of college bar and family-friendly restaurant. During the day, feel free to bring the kids- it's a very festive atmosphere. At night, it's much more of an adult watering hole. A win-win in our books. The food is light-years better than previously. To be clear, it's definitely pub-food, but well-prepared using fresh ingredients. Do not miss trying the house specials, the Spicy Turkey Melt and the Shenaniwich. Both are delicious. We also tried their burgers (quite good) and even ventured to order a pizza. The toppings were fresh and abundant, although my companion was indifferent about the crust. There's a good selection of beer available, along with a number of college-bar fried staples (cheese, mushrooms, etc), which we didn't try but appeared appetizing. If you're looking for a wholesome, fun, eclectic place to get a casual bite and a beer, you really can't beat Shenanigans. It's pretty amazing such a tiny place can support so many good places to eat. Definitely worth a stop if you're traveling down I-24. read more

We visited Shenanigan's while on a visit to Sewanee and basically nothing went well, all due to easily fixable customer service issues. There are a lot of hand-written signs that seem to communicate a certain level of annoyance with customers. It wasn't until after I had ordered and paid at the counter, and filled in the tip line, that I saw the signs telling me that I was expected to bus my own table, pick up my own food at the counter, and ask for refills at the counter. What was the tip for if I was doing all the work? There was another annoyed sign that said that if you ordered food from the deli and the grill, the food from the grill took longer and you would be called to the counter twice. It seems that the kitchen could either stage the food better or just explain to the customer as it occurs. So many signs. The sign telling us to get our own refills at the counter was pointless because while we were there, there was a line at the counter waiting to order and only one person working the counter, so we were faced with the option of either breaking in line or waiting in line to get refills, so we just went without. Our order was put in incorrectly but that was corrected after a slight hassle. I was charged $2 extra for a gluten free bun but wasn't told about the extra charge in advance. When our order came out, the wrong burger was on the gluten free bun. I caught it before my daughter ate my gluten free bun, but when I took both burgers up to the counter to point it out, the young woman behind the counter asked me couldn't I just switch the burgers and the buns. I explained to her that I was not celiac and would switch the burgers, but it could be dangerous to others who were celiac if their kitchen was messing up gluten free order with others. She said that her sister was celiac so she knew that. All these things seem minor, except for the gluten part, but when added together, the entire visit was just a hassle. The atmosphere just seemed to be one where the customers are a pain in the butt to the staff. And I have been to many counter service restaurants that seemed to function well without all the pissy signs. The burgers were OK, but the fries were from frozen and a little limp. read more

My friends and I made the mistake of stopping in on the way back to the airport on a Saturday afternoon. There is a long period of time after breakfast where the "grill is closed" so no burgers (reportedly what they are known for) or anything that requires cooking is available-- just limited cold sandwiches and a few things that could be thrown in the microwave. There are very few places to eat around this area, so we were forced to stay due to time limitations. We were treated rather rudely by the kids behind the counter. The tables were sticky and dirty. No one really seemed to care. I really do not see the attraction to this place other than there is a lack of competition. The food was average and overpriced. read more

I've gave this place several chances over the years that it has been reopened and under new ownership and have tried to take into consideration that several times the line has been out the door. The last time I visited was terrible! It wasn't that busy at all I ordered a burger which is ridiculously overpriced and doesn't come with any side and was almost 10$ and tasted as if it had been there since they opened. My husband had the patty melt and well it was the same as my burger only on bread that was hard as a rock. The girl at the register was unbothered my our horrible meal and rolled her eyes and blew and we didn't even ask for a refund was just a kinda wanted to let you know time of conversation although she didn't offer anything either. I didn't catch her name but then again how would you they have no name tags she was shot curly hair and glasses and was probably the most rude person I've ever encountered in a restaurant. She was definitely more interested in her phone than ringing us up or being concerned with the horrible meal we had just had. I do realize this establishment is mostly younger individuals but this girl is unbelievable and I believe she said she was the manager! This could be an awesome place if the food wasn't so expensive and terrible and the staff were taught some customer service. read more

Shenanigans is certainly a quintessential college bar with awesome food and drinks in a fun laid back atmosphere and is always a must do when we come up to Sewanee- sometimes several days in a row! Everything I've had there has been amazing but especially the cool cucumber and veggie sandwiches, black bean burger, mozzarella sticks and AMAZING pizza! Oh and great beer selection on tap as well! Shenanigans is a local institution. It's a place with history and character. Do not expect a big city bar- it's a great place for friends to hang out. More of a "joint" than anything. Just Another in a LONG Line of Snotty, Snobby Sewanee Eateries. And I was SO hoping to finally find a Down-Home Eatery that would Graciously and Gastronomically appeal to the Masses. Maybe it was the non-Genteel or Non-Gracious Demeanor of the Manager that set the tone. If not; it was a few seconds later when I was TOLD by her that I could ONLY get a WELL-done Burger (former Chef here). Or maybe it was that when I expressed that I'd stopped via the Empty Parking Lot and 80% LACKING seating inside - TO offer support to a burgeoning Restaurant and was responded to (again - TOLD) with a Litany of "THIS, THAT, and the OTHER is coming up__" But all the usual nose-in-the-air Sewanee attitude aside; The (tasted the Food in the Car for Review purposes - AFTER my experience) Fries were highly under-seasoned though cooked properly as well was the WELL DONE Cheeseburger - under-seasoned and sorely lacking in Cheese to (Ha-HA) top it off. Very basic food and way over priced! 4 cheese burgers, 3 fries and 1 onion ring $55.00!! The prices are not posted (which should've been my first clue) but there was a burger on the special board for $8.95 so I thought it was pricy but maybe the fries and burger would be worth it. WRONG! The fries and onion rings were $3.95 per order the burgers only were $8.95!!!!! They were served on paper plates and the drinks were in clear plastic cups so it is not what I would call a sustainable resturant even though they are selling themselves as environmentally concientious. The local beef was VERY dry (even for grass fed) and the local tomatoes were over ripe and mushy. I make much better burgers at home and I live here so I wish I had. Also, it is cafe style in that they yell out your number and you pick up your own food so you are not paying for atmosphere. I felt ripped off and will not be back.
