After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And The Haven, in Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. Unique from the moment of its conception, this restaurant / bar is more than just a place where you can get a bite to eat and a drink to quench your thirst. It's a welcoming space where people can go to relax, connect, and enjoy good times with those who mean the most to them. From the moment I walked through the door, I felt welcomed. Suddenly, the warmth of the modern industrial-chick interior, the exposed bricks, and the energy of the crowd, made me feel right at home and protected from the outside cold environment. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. From the people at the bar, drinking and watching a game on one of the large screen TVs, or enjoying some quality time with a group of friends while drinking and having something to eat, or playing pool at one of their beautiful blue pool tables, or a family in the low tables dining room in the back enjoying some elevated comfort food and a good night out. One of their employees, a friendly young lady greeted me and took me to the open space dining area with low tables, which I requested after she asked me for my preference. She gave me a copy of the menu and took my drink order of a Cherry Coke. To dine I ordered a Side Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing to start off with and a Grilled Chicken Teriyaki with Fried Rice and Broccoli as my main entrée. The food was amazingly delicious. Two nice size, plumpy and juicy chicken breast cooked to perfection with an amazing fried rice and fresh broccoli. All the staff there handled the opening-days rush in winter weather wonderfully, to the last detail. One of their owners/managers graciously came by my table to say hi and introduce himself. He clearly understood that relationships is key to the success of a business. My friendly and efficient server, Kiesha, provided me with excellent customer service, checking on me at the appropriate times, making sure to refill my Cherry Coke naturally, without me having to ask, and to keep an eye on me, even during rush time when she was serving a large table with a family of four. And her recommendation for the Grand Finale dessert of the Funnel Cake Fries was outstanding. They were the best I've ever had, cooked and served just right with chocolate, strawberry, and caramel dipping sauces. When I reached up front, the Host wasn't at the Host station but as I waited there standing up, one of the servers came by, greeted me, and took me to one of the booths. She handed me a copy of the menu which you could tell were run down around the edges. Only the Summer Food Specials one was in good condition. To drink I ordered a Sweet Iced Tea. It tasted watered down and had no lemon slice in it. Yet the server was so nice that I felt sorry for her because she had nothing to do with the quality of the drinks nor the food prepared there. My server goes back to put the order and next time I see her she is bringing me my main course and forgetting about my appetizer. When I mentioned it to her she tells me she'll go put the order in now. To be brief the Cod Fish was the only item that looked and tasted fresh. The shrimps where somewhat soggy, the onion rings looked awful, the rice pilaf was lukewarm and the Hushpuppies were burnt outside and raw inside. The scallops didn't taste fresh wrapped in mostly raw bacon. I asked for tater tots as a replacement for the onion rings, and even them were not cooked well. And if this wasn't enough, my Keylime Pie I ordered was not fresh. It was mushy like if it had been left out for a while. But once I decided to stop and explore it, it has become one of my favorite restaurants in Roanoke, Virginia. Its uniqueness lies not only in its colonial atmosphere and in its classic American cuisine, but primarily in its amazing staff that from the time you walk in begin to make your fine-dining experience one that you'll always remember and cherish dearly. Their refined behavior creates a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere that create unforgettable dining experiences. Today, after having gone through one of the worst snow and ice storms in years, I decided to not allow the icy roads to hold me back, and requested a Lyft to take me there for dinner. As soon as I arrived, the friendly host came out to greet me and take me to a table of my choice. My server from the first time I dined there, happened to recognize me and took me to the booth where I had dined the first time I ever dined there. We discussed a Mocktail for me to drink and she came back with an amazing drink, and a small meatball as an "amuse-bouche," designed to prepare ones palate for the meal. After studying the restaurant's extensive menu, I ordered their Bacon Wrapped Scallops as appetizer. For my main entrée I ordered the Prime Rib Combination that consisted of a generous portion of roasted prime rib served with a delicious lobster tail. For the two sides that came with my main entree, I had their famous tossed salad with their in-house made blue cheese dressing and a loaded baked potato. The scallops were not so big in size but big in flavor and texture. The salad was amazing, as always. The main entrée looked well at first, but when I cut into the prime rib it was too well done to be able to appreciate the flavor of the meat. But my server came by, as promised, to see if the prime rib was cooked to my satisfaction, and when I told her it was too well done for my original request of medium-rare, she gracefully apologized and took it back. Returning shortly with another piece of prime rib more to my liking. For dessert I had a slice of Pecan Pie a la mode, which by the way was amazingly delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant for one of the best fine-dining experiences of your life. And am looking forward to returning and ordering ahead of time their Baked Alaska to have for dessert.

This casual family-owned and operated American restaurant for over 12 years is located in the Roanoke/Botetourt County area and is known for its pub fare like hot dogs, burgers, and wings, with a large selection of craft beers and Coke products. When I arrived, I immediately noticed this family-oriented restaurant's community-focus. There were signs up of Family Meal Box, Taco Tuesday Family Pack, Karaoke Every Other Saturday, and Sunday Funday. There were couples, young and older dining there, as well as families. It's dog-themed decor was very unique, with dogs pictures all around the walls. It had seating areas with high tables and chairs, low tables and chairs, and chairs at the bar counter. The large screen high definition TVs were set at an appropriate distance so one could conveniently watch a game while dining there and having some beers. As soon as I entered, a young lady in the back asked me to seat at the table of my choice, and then she came down to bring me a menu and take my drink order. Even though they had an extensive selection of beers, since I was driving, I opted for an iced-cold Coke. To dine I started out with a Bam Bam Shrimp appetizer. The shrimps weren't Jumbo as described in the menu, but tasted delicious with the bam bam sauce. And to dine I ordered a Cowboy Burger that came with in-house made potato chips that were out-of-this-world and a Cheezy Dawg. The burger came in a fresh, soft bun and the patty was juicy and cooked to perfection, although the bacon inside was not crispy and I couldn't see the onion ring inside, it tasted good with the cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. The home-cut potato chips were just amazing. Best I've ever had. And the hot dog was an all beef quarter pound jumbo hot dog, split in the center and had chili, cheese, onions, and mustard, also in a fresh hot dog bun, and I added some ketchup as well. My server Tammie made sure to refill my drink without me having to mention it to her. For dessert I had their Fried Oreo Cookies and they tasted amazingly delicious. The best I've ever had. They were about 5 or 6 fresh Oreo cookies dipped in a light batter and fried mildly, then sprinkled with sweet powder sugar. They were so good and I was so full that I took 3 of them home with me to have as a snack later on. To pay, my server brought me a convenient little machine, where I paid with one of my credit cards, including my tip, Overall it was an extraordinary, relaxing dining experience and I highly recommend this restaurant when you want to have a truly enjoyable American meal.
