So lucky to have found this barbershop Valerie is awesome barber and I work in a five-star hotel and get lots of compliments on my hair cuts. Definitely feel more confident when Valerie cuts my hair. Some of the best haircuts ever had have come out of this little barbershop. I'm so lucky to have it in my neighborhood I would drive really far to come to this barbershop if I had to move away. I finally have a great barber that makes me look good . Awesome job thanks Valerie. Update update update Thank you Shellback barbershop. I just got the new position at the hotel I was going for. I got a haircut from Valerie before each interview . Out of hundreds of candidates I got the job at one of the compliments I received was about my haircut from one of the hotel managers. Let me start off by saying I was not impressed by VALERIE, the Owner she had an attitude and stared at me the whole time I was there. She cut my sons hair and I'm sure everyone has a bad day once in a while but his hair cut was not good a little uneven and way too short . She should of been paying closer attention to what she was doing instead of staring at me the whole time I was there. She asked for a Yelp review and I'm giving her one . I was in the area and told her I looked her up on Yelp . The Shellback is a small shop , very small too small for me. I felt this Barber shop is trying to hard to be cool . Parking was is awful here, only street parking and as you can see by the pictures posted No Parking near the Barber Shop . We parked a block up the street . Found this place on yelp. I needed a new barber because the last place I went wasn't all that great and not worth the price. They are close to my house so that was a plus off the bat. Fast and efficient especially since I was way overdue for a cut so it usually takes longer. I like that they take payapps and cards because I don't always carry cash so it was one less stop for me. I will definitely be going back. read more

Where Val goes, my boys follow! I travel from Downey, roughly 30mins just so my two boys get their cut from Val. Sure, I have dozens of places around me I can take them to but they absolutely do not measure up to Val's artistic hand! Not to mention her professionalism and decades of experience. Valerie, is no Ray. The Mop shop with Ray was much better.(now renamed Shellback barbers) Came back here for a haircut after trying out a couple other spots in Pedro after Ray got sick and passed away. Valerie, left me with scratches all over the back of my neck, my neck has been sanded raw almost bleeding, side burns were uneven, her demeanor was awkward. Excellent little shop. Valarie is a great barber and gave me and my son an excellent cut. My son squirms around(he's 21 months) yet val was able to produce a great cut. The shop is on the smaller side but it makes for a more intimate experience. This is the place to go to in San Pedro for Traditional cuts..I recommend this shop very highly and will be returning. read more

Just got my first haircut from Valerie today. She did a FANTASTIC job. I have been wandering alone in the barber desert since I moved to San Pedro and away from my old barber. I have had crappy haircut after crappy haircut, but now, finally, I have a new home. Regarding an earlier review, yes, she is in fact all woman. I assume that she's been so her entire life, but I didn't want to pry. Believe it or not, her gender did little to nothing to affect the quality of my cut. What did affect the quality of my cut is her mastery of her craft, ability to communicate back and forth with me, and her extremely pleasant demeanor which made the entire time there interesting and enjoyable. She's also got badass tattoo sleeves, and that's gotta mean something. Get down there and give her a try! read more

I had a totally positive experience at Valerie's shop. She gave me a great haircut after listening closely to the kind of cut I wanted. She was pleasant, friendly, and a good conversationalist. I like the vintage, traditional feeling of the shop, which adds to the small cluster of neighborhood businesses at the corner of Alma and 23rd. No heavy traffic or parking hassles. Small quaint little local barber shop. The owner Valerie cuts my sons hair every month and it comes out perfect. He requests an old retro look and she does it better than any of the other shops I've taken him to. The price is similar to what I've paid at previous places. I came here because of yelp reviews and I fell for the hair cut pictures that were posted here again. Looking for a new place for my boyfriend and son. This place is very small and claustrophobic, the shop doesn't have and old school appearance rather than it just looks old. Parking was extremely hard to find because of all the apartments in the area. My son went in and came out with a not clean cut, and it wasn't blended in to well either. It's been very difficult finding a barber in San Pedro . I have been to several barber shops and I tried giving this place a shot because of the positive reviews it had on yelp. My stylist moved away so I was in search of a stylist/barber that could do a scissor cut on my short hair. Apparently they are hard to come by. I tried a few (thank God my hair grows fast) and was about to give up and just change my whole style until I found myself at this shop. For one, I thought it was pretty cool having a female barber cut my hair since most are men. Two, parking was easy (not so easy w/my original stylist). I have getting my hair cut by Valerie for years now even before Valerie took over this shop. I am always satisfied with my haircut. There is no real parking for the shop except street parking. I am not sure what other people's definition of having difficultly finding parking as I easily find parking all the time on the street. At it's worst I had to walk about a block to reach the shop. read more
