Took my Vehicle in for a Car Wash. It Barely puts out any water/soap and so there is really no way for the brushes to clean plus the brushes run a very short time and do repeat in both directions. She said that she was not able to do either so I told her to come out and look for herself which she did and agreed that it was still dirty. If you need propane, good luck. They will deny it. Even though there is two cashiers. One doesn't know how to fill up and the other was to busy and told me to come back later! This station has come up in the world within the last 6 months! It is actually a fairly large travel store and carries a wide variety of appropriate merchandise for travelers, as well as atm and car wash services. They sell fried chicken and have a small alcohol dept which is stocked well. I visit regularly as it is convenient to the freeway on-ramps and Ive watched as they upgraded their stock to be what people like. It is no longer the dingy and old station it used to be. Restrooms are spotlessly clean, counters and displays are organized. Customer service is prompt and courteous. They made the right move in hiring a professional in station management. This Shell Gas Station charges CREDIT surcharges when using DEBIT card. This is atypical of most gas stations! The street side signage IS DECEPTIVE! The pricing sign southbound drivers see does not have the deceptive "fine print" for you to read. Southbound drivers will turn in the first driveway because the right lane is a MUST TURN onto 10-Freeway and it gets dicey to go to the far driveway where the sign with "fine print" is located. Fine print? What fine print? The fine print that attentive consumers will be told about when they take their pump receipt inside to ask the management WHY they were charged the HIGHER CREDIT price when they used their DEBIT card. The fine print people will be referred to when people go inside to protest that they WOULD HAVE PAID CASH - if they were warned that DEBIT was treated as CREDIT! How many people look at their receipt and catch the deception? The management will not allow you to reverse the transaction (pay cash and credit your debit card) when you discover you've been deceived. OK.... I asked for a dollar refund (it was more than a dollar). The management will not hand you the difference. They'd rather you go to Rip-off Report, Yelp or Google Reviews to get your $1 of satisfaction. Okay. Here I am. When you purchase gasoline you are often faced with two different prices: CASH price or CREDIT price. That said, other than AM/PM ARCO that clearly charges $0.45 for using a debit card, most gas stations will treat your DEBIT card as CASH and absorb the miniscule processing fee. That's why the terminals in the gas pump asks: "Credit or Debit." Yesterday, Sunday, we were driving back from Phoenix and as much as our Dodge tried, it was on fumes by Banning/Beaumont. I turned off and saw a Shell, a Chevron and an AM/PM a block north. As we passed by the Shell the CASH price was $3.39. We drove to the corner and the AM/PM ARCO was $3.29 - a better deal to top off our rental car and the logical choice but they were full of cars and experiencing some sort of problem, so no big deal, the extra $0.10/gal. at the Shell back by the freeway on ramp would cost only a dollar more. We pulled into the first driveway entrance at Shell as we were driving south and there was the sign: $3.39 CASH or $3.49 CREDIT. I had in my wallet, cash, credit and debit. But to use cash I'd have to go inside the food market & likely wait in line behind lottery ticket and soda buyers, so, OF COURSE, I grabbed my Wells Fargo Debit Card. I inserted my DEBIT card. The display asked me: "Debit or Credit?" I selected "Debit." The display asked be to use the keypad to enter my PIN and push ENTER. I did that. I pumped my gas. The total amount seemed higher than it has been at any other gas station on the 3-day trip. I looked closely at the receipt. I was charged $3.49 - the CREDIT price. I went inside asked the female cashier if I could get a dollar back as I was charged the CREDIT amount when I specifically chose "DEBIT" and she said: "Sorry no. ALL plastic (but a Shell Card) is considered CREDIT by Shell and the policy is clearly spelled out on our sign." I told her there was no policy on the sign. She pointed to a big corner sign at the on ramp to the 10 freeway that we could not see from our turn in driveway NOR from the pumps we used on the north side of the station. I asked her again to remedy the situation - take cash & cancel my debit card or hand me a buck. Actual difference was $1.43 more than the cash price and $2.45 MORE that the AM/PM ARCO station a stone's throw away ($2.88 less $0.45 debit card fee). Gas Stations are allowed under California law to offer 2-tiered pricing as the station might pay an average of 2% to process a CREDIT transaction. And this is where Shell Oil (at least this Shell franchise) is taking advantage of their customers. The processing company that charges Shell 2% for credit will charge them $0.10 (a dime on average) to process a Debit Card transaction. That is why MOST gas stations will offer their CASH prices to Debit Card users. Had Shell's POS pump asked me if I agreed to the CREDIT price after selecting DEBIT I would have canceled the transaction and walked inside to save a $1.50. It DID NOT ASK! If it had said: "We charge $0.45 to process a Debit Card transaction - Y/N?" - I would have agreed to that too, as a convenience - but it DID NOT ASK. This station elects to USE DECEPTIVE PRACTICES. The Law in most states (a little less clear in California) http://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/credit_card_surcharges states that if a gas station elects to use a surcharge (a two-tier pricing system) that it shall so state on ALL signage where prices are displayed INCLUDING AT THE PUMP. Not at Highland Shell. When I asked for a refund of $1. The lady said: "Sorry, you should have read our sign." I did - just not a "particular" sign. I asked is a dollar worth a negative review. Went to get a car wash which the dryer did not turn on and left my car with many water spots and still could not get a reset or money back. The employees are all trained to say the same thing. PAY WITH CASH. That being said, the best prices come with a cash payment. READ the signs EVERWHERE! I have never had an issue with being over charged. Worst customer service!! The signs they have outside say $2.00 off car wash on Wednesdays and $.20 off gasoline with purchase of a car wash. I got neither because I didn't actually go inside the shop to purchase the car wash. Whaaat?! Having little kids, it is such an inconvenience to have to get everyone out of the car. So after I saw my receipt and saw there was no discount, I got everyone out of the car and asked the woman at the counter. I wrote a review for this gas station because it's just gas and I found it strange someone would take time to write shitty reviews about a gas station attendant not being "friendly enough." Call me racist but I assume most employees at Shell speak very little English. I didn't walk in expecting them to hold my hand while pumping or select my favorite iced coffee from their memory. I think we can all agree gas stations in general deserve 4 money signs because it's always going to seem expensive (especially for my my 26 gallon Porsche Cayenne tank) but I can't say this gas station is gouging it's customers nor can I say I expected anything less. In the state of CA there is always a surcharge for using a card whether that be debit or credit - it's always there and it's only a .35 surcharge soooo idk- maybe just use cash if it's breaking the bank. As far as the people with kids who expect a gas station to go above and beyond to accommodate them - im not sure those gas stations from the 50's are still around. Veterans day morning! No work today so let's get some things done... I decided to try out the car wash at the gas station. They have a big sign posted about $2 off on Wednesdays. Every gas pump has a printed sign that says the same thing. I purchased the car wash with my fill up and proceeded. Once I got to the kiosk to enter my code, I realized that I had not in fact received my $2 coupon. No big deal right...surely they'll simply give me a refund. I went through the car wash and parked to go inside to get my $2 refund. The manager Racquel on duty met me with disdain. I don't know if she's always like that or just having a bad morning. Willing to giver her the benefit of the doubt, I explained my problem. She said, "So......????" I asked her for the $2 refund and she curtly said that I should have come in to pay for the car wash rather than pay outside at the gas pump. Nowhere did it say that on any of the posted signs, but even if it did surely she would make good right??? NOPE. She said there was nothing she could do but if I really wanted to talk to someone else, her superior would be there at noon. Yeah right... I'm gonna come back for the possibility of being treated with contempt and told to go pound sand. I asked her if she was sure this was the type of reputation she wanted to have in the community, she said she didn't care. Okay...and that was the last time my family ever spends a dime here. Very rude employees, ignorant owner and a RIPOFF place! Filled up, ordered a carwash and when equipment malfunctioned, asked for a reset or money back, was refused both. No customer loyalty, stay far away from this station. I kicked a flower pot, found out it was plastic and it cracked, they called police. I called police to report not getting a refund(Thiefs), police wanted to arrest me, the customer for cracking the flower pot.No customer protection. Ended up having to pay(or be arrested) $200 for a plastic flower pot. Never got the carwash, never got the refund. The worker there was the most rude person, the owner on another planet. Their gas prices are bi polar. They flip flop every other day.. Prices are always high, but I only stop in on my way to work to grab a Monster Energy Drink, 2 for $3.00.
