This is a true diner, the food is on par with a home cooked vibe that tastes good. Selection was wide with food to address most people's palates. The service was prompt and efficient with the staff all very friendly. Coffee refills came around often and we were asked how our meal was. The ambiance was of a crowded and busy Sunday morning with everyone enjoying their food. read more

We love the Shelby Cafe. This is our Sunday spot. It has a home town feel and the atmosphere is so friendly. The waitstaff is amazing and always checking on you making sure your glass is full and that you don't need anything. The food is fantastic! Some of our favorites are the Cubed Steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole and a roll. The western omelette with home fries and Texas toast. The Sunday Special: Country ham with Mac n cheese, pintos and cornbread and the Carolina burger with fries! If you haven't been yet, you need to go! read more

The last few times I've been Shelby Café, it has been mediocre at best. Today, I ordered the three vegetable plate and wanted broccoli casserole. I found out that there are no longer serving it, and in its place they now have cabbage casserole. The young lady on the phone helped me decide to give it a try. Don't get me wrong, I love cabbage. Fried cabbage would've been a better option for their menu because this did not taste good at all. Please put the broccoli casserole back on the menu, or consider sharing the recipe so that those that love it can still enjoy it. read more

If you want simple stick to your ribs pretty good food for a very, very affordable price check this place out. You'll feel like you stepped back in time with the decor! Our server was especially friendly and helpful. Our food was out so fast I wondered if they knew what we were going to order ahead of time. The bathrooms were clean! You seat yourself. It's a pretty large space broken up into two different sections and you can tell it's a local favorite! Seem like everyone knew everyone else except us! They cooked my over medium eggs perfectly and the liver mush was not oily or over seasoned! I didn't care for their hash browns as they were somewhere between undercooked in places and overcooked in other places lol! It's a simple menu but for $7 it did the trick! read more

Go once a week. Food is aways spot on! Hot and tasty with prompt service. Waitresses are attentive and present a great attitude. Ambiance is somewhat dated and worn. Some booths need attention. Overall a good experience, read more

Let's take a step back into the South and imagine a place where you don't really fit in unless you are a local or someone who teeters on the mindset that it's America and no one else. The comment "it must have been made in China" came up from our server regarding a new product they were using. Don't know if she was joking. However, not the place for it or anywhere for that matter. The place is crowded and will get crowded depending on the time of day it is. The crowd is pretty nice and there's chatter all around so it's not a quiet place. The food came out and it's cafe food so what else do you expect. The food was cooked and you really can't mess up breakfast. However, the coffee was a cross between hot water and hot water. Not a fan at all. The price was reasonable and made up for the coffee. read more

Great experience for breakfast. Passing through and had breakfast with my wife and daughter. Nice selection of choices... we had omelettes. Waitress was great... stereotypical southern charm and super attentive. Very crowded but service was fast. Try the liver mush... ask for a sample. As a Yankee, I must say I was reluctant but definitely worth it. read more

Love this place! Classic diner. Great breakfast, crispy bacon, grits! Perfect eggs and toast. The vegetable plates are out of this world. Southern cooking: green beans, turnip greens, pinto beans, cole slaw, mac and cheese...etc. This could be my last meal. Heavenly! read more

Stopped here for dinner one night just to try it. It wasn't exactly what I expected, after hearing alot of people go here. Prices are not bad. The night we went I ordered beef stew. Never again!!! It was not good. I could not believe they used canned potatoes in it!!! I asked the waitress she said yes that's how they make it. No Thanks!!! The Salad dressing honey mustard was homemade and very good! Then I ordered ham. That wasn't too bad. I don't remember the difference between city ham and country but I got the one that's thicker. The other plate was the other ham that was thin, fried till it was over done and like rubber!! Absolutely disgusting. Too thin and over cooked. By that point we just wanted to finish, pay and leave. I am not sure if we would ever go back. A friend said he got a hamburger there and it wasn't bad. So maybe to try that. This place was just celebrating 100 years in business. Crazy! I guess that's because they cut corners now compared to years ago I am sure. read more

Straight up diner cranking out all the usual suspects with a smile. Centrally located on the main drag, this is where everyone from the mayor to the Little League coach catch up while filling their bellies. I like diners especially for breakfast. Both our plates came out quickly, piping hot, and as ordered. I was disappointed, however, that both my livermush and home fries were cooked in the fryer and not the flat top. Overcooked. That said, I'll return since these places have a corner in my heart from traveling with my Dad who was a diner aficionado. Tired of the franchise version of breakfast? Gets the coffee perking on my "Give 'em a Whirl" meter. Pull up a chair here. read more

We stopped in for breakfast. First off, let's talk about Amy our server. She is the sweetest!!!! We enjoyed talking to her, and she introduced us to livermush! (Ended up treating us to a side of it!) The food here was amazing. HUGE blueberry pancakes, and the best French toast! Homemade seasoned home fries. I highly recommend this adorable diner! read more

Just a great breakfast, lunch and dinner spot! Caters to all ages with a great family atmosphere.

I heard about Shelby Cafe and decided today was the day to stop in for breakfast. Boy, am I glad I did. Hardwood floors moveable tables and chairs. I looked over all the menu breakfast selections, and they are all great selections, which made it difficult to choose. I ordered the vegetarian omelet, grits, and homefries, plus coffee . The plate was amazingly full of deliciousness. Tasty food and coffee. I'm so happy I stopped in. The waitress was very pleasant and efficient, very professional. Thank you. read more

Enjoying Sunday breakfast with my son in my old stomping grounds of Shelby and one of my favorite breakfast spots. They upgraded a bit in the last 2 years, but it still has the same feel of a throwback restaurant. Brody ordered pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage links and I ordered the country breakfast with city ham, hash browns, eggs over easy and a grilled biscuit. Brody has never tried liver mush so I added that so he can try it out. No better place to try his first liver mush than in Shelby, NC. The plate of hot liver mush came out first for him to try and he ate most of it before his meal came out. I think he's a fan!! And after the liver mush the meals lagged way behind. Even for a busy Sunday it was a long wait for a traditional breakfast meal. 20 minutes from the time the liver mush was served until the meals came and my coffee cup has been dry for 10 minutes before the meal with no refill. I could have chose any place between Brevard and Weddington and I chose the place with history and tradition and I did not expect to wait that long. After the wait the food came and our server refilled my coffee and we ate in hurry. The food was good, not great. It was all traditional simple breakfast food. Nothing fancy or complicated this the disappoint in the lag on the food. I have had plenty of good meals here with great service this unfortunately was not one of those times. I am willing to try it again next time I am in the area and see if this classic establishment can renew my faith. Thanks! read more

I can honestly say, ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN THE HISTORY OF RESTAURANTS!!! No kidding, you will absolutely love this establishment. Let's start with the service first. The nicest, funny, helpful, friendly and the absolute epitome of "down to earth" folks who "happily" provide the best service experience possible...ask them anything, including their own personal suggestions for what to eat, or add, or how best cooked and you will not be disappointed!! I was amazed to learn just how much was "homemade" DAILY in the restaurant...Our waitress was AMAZING!!! The food....WOW, are you ready for the best example of homemade cooking done by folks who genuinely seem to CARE AND LOVE what they do? I'm talking about gravy that you can stand a fork up in, eggs that are so fluffy they almost "float", salad dressings that are ALL homemade-try the Greek with the blue cheese on the hamburger salad, BOMB!!...rice, grits, fried pork chops and the best omelettes EVER!! I was checking out the other dishes as they were being served around our table and I can't wait to try everything I saw...Check out the "sides" section...everything you can imagine is available as a side dish!! Ambiance is exactly what I'm looking for in a diner!! Comfortable clean booths and with a nice view of downtown. Easy to converse with your table and those around you if you choose to. Working folks who deserve good food, fast, and reasonably priced. Restrooms were clean and had everything necessary. No frills and no BS, just a very nice place to enjoy some incredibly delicious homemade food....Breakfast served all day too... You pay at the counter and the two young ladies who helped us were great to talk with and so polite. If you're in Shelby NC, or anywhere even close, definitely stop by...you will not be disappointed!!! Thank you... read more

I love this place! Service is always friendly, and I haven't had a bad meal yet! I would especially recommend the chicken tender dinner. I've never had such large and juicy tenders as what they serve. I've even tried the fried liver mush and I hate liver. Was fairly decent! Breakfast plates are HUGE and remind me of NY or NJ diners. I love this place! The food is delicious! Service is quick and friendly! Bottom line, this is a great restaurant! Here is a clue for a good place to do anything...consistent staff. I work at a place where the staff has been together 30 years. We all know it's good. I have been eating here for 3 plus years. The waitstaff is the same. If the staff is consistent, they know quality. They are solid! Heck 100 years! I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

I did not mind the wait to be seated as I knew the food would be great. I was seated and waited over 15 minutes and still none had came to table. The pancake house is larger and has the same about of floor staff taking orders and there service is much better. read more

Everything--from the breakfast all day to the Mayor's Special (livermush, cheese and mayo in a breakfast burrito-style tortilla) to the meat-and-3 plates to the cheeseburgers--is delicious. They stay real busy, so service time can fluctuate, but we always get a good meal at a great price with kind folks.
