Sheffield Park and Garden are lovely, mature, beautifully maintained and interesting. The staff and volunteers are awesome, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.
I am a dog owning, garden loving member of the National Trust. In general, the National Trust is very dog friendly, which is fantastic, BUT dog haters have forced dogs out of the Sheffield Park garden before 1.30pm, apparently because they don't like looking at them! This has resulted in dog owners showing up with their dogs when the park opens (because dog owners like to walk early in the day) and being left outside with the option of leaving the dogs in the car in the blazing sunshine, taking an on leash walk through the park (different from the garden) or walking along a rather treacherous narrow road to an off leash area which is only truly accessible through the garden from which dogs are banned! The road isn't really wide enough for two cars to pass one another and several people seem to be visiting in RVs which are super wide. I went with my elderly father and by the time we'd tried to stay off the road by walking on the other side of a fence and realized that we couldn't get out of the field without retracing our steps, he was tired and we gave it up as a bad job. Since it's the summer, we couldn't leave the dogs in the car for more than a few minutes, so that was the end of our excursion!
Kudos to the National Trust for not giving in completely to the haters, but it seems daft to have given in at all, considering the fact that the dogs are all on leash throughout the gardens and park except for the one small area which is really only accessed through the gardens from which they are banned!
Also, there are lots and lots of children...no dogs, loads of children, what could be worse? Finally, everything (entrance, cafe, loo etc) is a long walk from everything else, if you have mobility problems then plan ahead and book one of their fantastic electric mobility vehicles. read more
