Long before the Turnpike became a way for the state to extract money from travelers to pay for continuous "improvements" and to fund other non-Turnpike related agencies and items, it was a super highway allowing fast, safe travel across the commonwealth. The Midway plazas were unique because they were across from one another and there's a tunnel that runs under the road that joins them; this tunnel has long been closed to the public. Anyway, if you have time, it's fun to look at the pictures that adorn this plaza and also to check out the items in the gigantic display case that celebrate the creation and history of this road.

With the start of the Lone Ranger as a regular radio show, this became a place to fill up the tank. Also with new president FDR starting his Fireside Chats, customers could fill up here and listen on the road. Not so much music yet, as Quincy Jones was just born, but that will come later. Cars with radios were gaining popularity, but so was air travel as the all-metal Boeing 247 took flight, but it wouldn't be filling up here. Nor would the vehicle that set the land speed record in Daytona Beach at 272 MPH. Try that on the roads of Bedford and you'd probably end up in the Juniata River. With Johnny Unitas being born just down the road in Pittsburgh, this service station would be a good spot to fill up on his journey to Baltimore a few years later. Football would be his game, even though the first baseball all-star game was played in Chicago. Speaking of Football, the Steelers played their first game and only scored a Safety against the Giants. The Giants would make it to the first NFL Championship game, but lose to... Da' Bears, who created a dance called "The first NFL Championship Shuffle", without a Punky QB though. The state liquor stores also started the same year in PA and still exist almost 90 years later. I would imagine one of my ancestors filled up here driving from store to store looking for that rare bottle. Nobody was filling up Nissans or Datsuns though, as that company started at the end of 1933 and didn't quite make it to Western PA yet John Dillinger also started his bank robbing career, and would need more and more gas stations to fill up. Another bank robber, Pretty Boy Floyd caused the Kansas City Massacre, which would eventually be connected to Bedford, PA with the Interstate Highway system. It's a far cry from what's happening in Germany with that country becoming a single-party state under the Nazi Party. God Bless America, right? TLDR: A lot happened in 1933!

Basically your new, flashy, huge gas station in the area. When you have to reconfigure the road…read morethrough the area to allow for such a behemoth you know they were serious when they were building this thing. Basically this is a gas station on steroids. They built this thing to compete with other chains that have a stronger foothold in the area. I have been to a few Rutter's before, but this one just seems different. I'm not sure why when these are built that they have to gigantic. I suppose they are aiming for all the truck traffic that goes through this corridor, and that is the reason they reconfigured the road to allow easier access. When I say this thing is huge I am not exaggerating. The inside is vast and has an expanse of items to choose from. They have their own take on their made-to-order food, I did not partake. When I was there they were still in the process of fully opening up. It appears that this place will have a gaming parlor. You know, just like every other gas station in the state now, they will have skills game. Unnecessary? Yes, but it seems to be the norm everywhere in the state of PA now. After stretching my legs and using the facilities I found an item and made my way to the register to pay. Not sure if it is like this at all Rutter's, but I had a loyalty card forced on me. Not that I needed one, but I got one. It was just kind of shoved on me, even though I really didn't need one. Overall, because this is brand new it gets high stars, but over time I feel like this is going to slide a bit.

He wanted to kind of go out of the way to make the stop and I said why don't we stop here since it is on the way. We came into this location and the lot feels a little small for all that is offered. It is located on one of the corners at the busy intersection with the main street. Small amount of parking and what feel like a small amount of pumps as well. Inside, however, the store feels big. It has all that a Sheetz has to offer and what many of us have come to expect. We were kind of in a hurry and didn't want to take up too much time here. Instead of going the MTO route we just grabbed a few items from the shelves food wise. I also made sure to grab me some sweet tea and I was good to go. I actually got outside before my dad. He ended up coming out with a bag full of stuff that he didn't necessarily need to get. But it satisfied him. With this location being on our way it didn't add to much time to our arrival time for our final destination. It is off the highway, but not too far off the highway.

Not much else is around in terms of gas, so it was this or chance it and go further up the road. Gas pricing was the norm for the state here. Enough pumps to handle a rush. There are also diesel pumps around back for big trucks. Inside offers all the convenience items you would expect from a gas station. Also there is hot food to order as well. Bathroom was clean and usable.

RG's Food Shop is a Gulf Oil Gas Station and convenience store…read more We stopped in here to gas up the rental car on our way back to Virginia. Paid at the pump and refueled. It's located right before you get on the PA Turnpike, so it's very convenient. You can also pick up a lot of convenience store goods, and there are restrooms here. RG's Food Shop/Gulf Oil is physically connected to the McDonald's here. You can walk back and forth between the two without going outside.

This chain of…read moregas stations/convenience stores is found everywhere in this part of the country, but not all Sheetz are created equal. My buddy and I happen to stop by this locations as we traversed the state of PA through it's smaller roads. We were a bit tired, and needed some fuel. We walked in here, and found it to be one of the better Sheetz convenience stores. The place was clean, very well stocked, and run by friendly employees. The locals were friendly too. After making a pit stop (the restrooms were very clean and had a nice pine smell), we stocked up on more caffeine for the rest of the trip. This place definitely believes in service with a smile, and it made our long arduous trip a bit better. I don't think I will be crossing this part of PA again. But if I do, I won't think twice about stopping here.
