Wonderful food and friendly service plus a fabulous porch to sit out on. We had the bison burger, sheep mountain burger and the rockfish fish and chips. It was all very good! The deserts look amazing and are all made on property but we are too full!

I'm a huge fan of the Halibut Benedict! Delicious.

Really good espresso/coffee. This is the second time I've ordered this this week - super good

Who expects grand cuisine at a lodge in Alaska? Outstanding food, service, view and lodging! Well done, SML, well done.

We stopped here on a weekend in August on our way to Valdez. Since we started driving around 6pm we would have gotten to Valdez late at night. Our friends booked it for us and they were a little familiar as they had been here before. I had not. This is a little place on the side of the highway that has a little lodge where you check in, get coffee from their espresso bar, or breakfast from their kitchen. We stayed at the little cabins that had three rooms total in one cabin, each room had two beds queen maybe or double twin. (really UNcomfortable, I slept better the next night sleeping in a tent on the ground) there were two communal bathrooms that were pretty nice in a cabin not too far along the boardwalk. I'm not sure who used those bathrooms or if it was mainly for the three cabins close by. There were bigger cabins up the way and they also had tent and RV sights as well. They had a greenhouse where there were lots of flowers and fruits/veggies growing. I believe they served breakfast and dinner at the lodge but we never ate inside. For breakfast we ordered it to be dropped off at our rooms at a certain time the next morning. They had a paper you fill out with multiple choice questions on what to eat. It was a pretty good breakfast. They even had a hit run that was connected the the bathrooms but because of COVID it was closed. I didn't bring a swim suit anyways so that would have been disappointing either way. They hold events here as our friends had been here for a wedding before with a cute little gazebo down a path. There was an open grassy area to play games or kids to run around. In the rooms there were only two beds, a night stand and a table in the room. The bathroom had a sink and a toilet and a shower. Overall cute little place to stay, perfect for like a anniversary date weekend or a family gathering place. Check the website for details on room rates. If you're looking for something high tech this place is pretty rustic no tv or private bathroom. Check out the view though!

We stumbled upon this restaurant driving from Anchorage to Valdez, Alaska. We travel with the tour guide who told us this area was very popular in which to find sheep wandering on the sides of the mountain. This restaurant and lodge was certainly appropriately named! There were not many food options in between these two cities, as we found ourselves driving through very rural areas. Sheep Mountain Lodge was the perfect place to stop on our journey. The restaurant is literally fitted into a hillside. There was an area for campers to hang out, as well as a few small lodging areas available. The restaurant was small itself, but it was quaint. Our tour guide told us in advance that they had amazing homemade cookies. She was right! We stocked up on these baked goods for the week, as we found there weren't many food options off the beaten path in our time at Alaska. The cookies were HUGE and so good. Believe it or not, this small hometown restaurant was known for its dessert. Voted best dessert in Alaska, we had to give it a try! Definitely delicious. The other food on the menu was okay--nothing fancy, nothing awful. We had to keep in mind that this was a small family business in the mountains. We did appreciate a home cooked meal though! The bathrooms here were very nice! They had additional restrooms out back behind the restaurant, and they were definitely nice for back country roads. They also had some neat exhibits around the restaurant including a huge bull mousse you could pose and take pictures with! The beautiful flowers on the hillside made the stop extremely worth it. What a sight! I'm so glad we stopped to check this place out!

I want to start by saying...Sheep Mountain Lodge was the BEST place I stayed at the whole time I was in Alaska, bar none. The staff was the best I came across the whole trip - they were all very pleasant and friendly. They were more than willing to help make your stay enjoyable. I was on a motorcycle tour August 2022. One of my Bucket List items was to walk on a glacier. When I arrived at the lodge, I saw they had a helicopter and did tours to the glacier. I checked into taking a flight up to the glacier but was told they were done for the day. I was bummed... Remember, I said the staff was friendly and wanted to help you enjoy you stay, well David (I think) saw I was bummed, he made a call, got in touch with Mark (owner of lodge/pilot) told him I was looking to do a glacier tour and Mark said sure and off I went. David/Mark could have said, "Sorry, we're done for the day" - but instead, they made it happen and I was able to check an item off my Bucket List. Mark's knowledge of glaciers was phenomenal, he was more than willing to share his knowledge and answer all my questions. My cabin (#2 if not mistaken) was fabulous. It has a great view and after all, the views/sights were the reason I went to Alaska. It's the view I think of most when I reflex on my trip. The restaurant was outstanding, with a great selection of dishes. The desert I had was pie and it was made on site. When I come back to Alaska - without a doubt, I'll be going back to Sheep Mountain Lodge!

I'd read about Sheep Mountain Lodge a few years when I was searching for new hiking trails, so it's been on my to do list for awhile. We ended up there totally by accident today though, so I actually didn't even access the lodge nor the trails. We were on a beauiful long drive through the misty magical mountains of Brigadoon and it was too rainy to fire up the grill. Wet, cold and hungry we sought shelter at the adorable log cabin-y restaurant. Immediately I thought to myself "why the F doesn't Anchorage have places like this?!?" Apart from the fact places this quaint and warm, by their very nature only exist in rural Alaska... AND the view, even in the rain is fuck-all stunning, the food is actually really damn good. How the hell they manage to keep fresh produce stocked when restaurants in Anchorage can't manage this feat had me scratching my head. Pride, I imagine, and actually giving a shit about your customers may have something to do with it as well. The ambiance, the food (reasonably priced), and the service were all excellent. My hummus appetizer (homemade) was excellent. Feta, real feta that made me want to weep. Legit kalamata olives. Snappy veggies. This east coast girl has missed this kind of food since I moved to Alaska. Lets be honest, Anchorage is a culinary wasteland of sorts. So the drive to Sheep Mountain will be repeated. The food and the views are entirely worth the time invested.

We had an amazing time here. A delicious lunch followed by an incredible helicopter ride to the glacier. The staff was very friendly. Mark is a fantastic pilot and tour guide.

Thank you to Mark and his team at Sheep Mountain Lodge for making our engagement weekend a dream come true! Fantastic food (I highly recommend the halibut and carrot cake), beautiful clean cabin accommodations and an incredible scenic helicopter flight! We saw a bull moose, sheep, black bear, mountain goats and a golden eagle on top of the awe inspiring mountains and glacier! So many fun activities near by from hiking Lion's Head, to walking on Matanuska Glacier and Gunsight Mountain is on our hiking list for next year. If you're looking for a fun weekend get away, Sheep Mountain Lodge should top the list!

This was a $10 breakfast special ?? Not a kids meal?? lol

I used to come here all the time as a kid and loved it but either I have a bad memory or they changed management because the food is not good... come here for the pie (it's renowned) but it's not a great eat or great service. The ambiance is nice and it's beautiful scenery but don't come here and expect a great meal. The 3 stars is for the view and ambiance, the -2 is for the really bad food.

An excellent option to have for dining while in the area of Glacier View. We decided to stop for an early dinner before heading back to Anchorage after a full day of sightseeing and are so glad that we did. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess/waitress who seated us and were quickly offered drink options and a dinner menu. The temperature was a little chilly out, so we ordered a hot cocoa for my daughter along with our local beers, meals and soups all around. Their fresh tomato bisque really hit the spot warming me up, along with their light and fresh BLT sandwich. Cute, quaint cabin with friendly service, tasty beers from the Alaskan local breweries and friendly service really make this a great option for the area. We come back to Alaska often and will definitely make it a point to stop here again if in the area.

A mountain breakfast, simple but nice.

Nestled in the trees, you turn off the road into a little slice of Eden. The lodge is a spectacular log cabin style building with a huge deck overlooking the valley below - one that houses a spectacular river flowing from the Matanuska glacier. The days included sleeping in very comfortable beds, first in a solo cabin and then in one of the rooms within one of the larger lodges which have a few room inside. The lodge was nicer, but we liked the solo cabin a bit better. The common area in the lodge was nicer however. Very potato/potahto. They have a dining area and a full service restaurant/bar in the main building and it's a delight! Many meals are buffet style, and they have single to order items available as well. The Cioppino one evening was spectacular! In addition to the comfortable beds, they have a massive hot tub available for adults to use, a huge deck off the back of the main building and a rec room type building with a large TV and a big table for meeting up. The small refrigerators are located in the rec building and the lodges. It's enough room for snacks and a night of leftovers. One evening we were all sitting outside of the deck chatting around 10:30/11:00 and because the sun never sets, we saw a lovely rainbow just before heading to bed. Staff are great, there are tons of hiking/walking trails in the area and the place is even graced a couple dogs who love to keep you company! We'll be here again! In their little slice of the wilderness, it's a big piece of heaven!

MVWL had the most helpful and accommodating team I have encountered in recent memory. Cal and Anthony set the high bar for customer service. We also met the owner, and along with Cal and Anthony, we had engaging conversations about the location, Alaska, adventure and travels. Our room in Glacier Hall was basic and functional, but not luxurious. It didn't matter, because the view, lodge and property was so great. Although we didn't take advantage of all the amenities, there were several (hot tub, fire pit, etc.). We stayed on the last night of the summer season (9/14/2022). The Heli-Ski season begins in February, which sounds like a great reason to return. There is also an airstrip adjacent to the property, with several planes based there. Additionally, MVWL is very close to Matanuska Glacier. Thanks again to the team at MVWL. Below is the view from our room and also a few shots from the lodge.

Warning this will be a long post…read more.. One word to describe this place is amazing. Our travel agent from Homer booked us Matsukana Lodge because we needed a stop between the long drive from Valdez to Seward. I looked at the website and was impressed by the best site of any B&B we looked at for the whole state (after complimenting Brenda on her website she said her niece who is a Web designer helped her). When we pulled in right after the 100 mile marker we were greeted by the majestic lodge. We were welcomed in by all their dogs which were super friendly and shown to the Glacier Room. The pictures don't do the place justice, the room was huge and beautifully decorated and appointed. We were given complimentary reusable aluminum bottles as well as luggage tags. The private bathroom was huge with a whirlpool bath and a separate shower. It was easily nicer than a $300+ boutique hotel you would get back in California. Not only was our room spectacular, we were told there was a mini gym and pool table in the garage. As we were on vacation I chose not to partake in the gym but the pool table was in an awesome game room above the garage. I absolutely loved the nice touch of Monopoly cards painted into the walls. The tour didn't end their, we were also shown the hot tub with majestic views of the private lake and surrounding mountains. Additionally there was a pool house with a kayak you could use on the lake. Basically I will close by saying Matsukana Lodge is a mini 5-star resort in the middle of rural Alaska. It will blow your mind and make you disappointed at any other B&B you ever go to again. I don't think I'll ever be able to top my one night stay here and look forward to coming back again to stay longer! Pro tip: the 2 downstairs rooms have more privacy but we loved the layout of the Glacier Room. You can't go wrong with any room.
