We had two dinners and two breakfasts here while staying two nights at one of their premium cabins. The cabin was spacious, clean, and thoughtfully furnished, with warm lighting and cozy furniture that created an inviting atmosphere. We loved the peaceful setting, the comfortable beds, and the beautiful mountain views from both the windows and the front porch. Breakfast was excellent and well worth the price. We tried the Palmer Farmers Omelet, Solstice Scramble, Breakfast Burrito, Halibut Benedict, and Sheep Mountain Pancakes. Everything was good, but the standouts were the Solstice Scramble and the Halibut Benedict. The breakfast potatoes were crispy and flavorful. The only downside was that their espresso machine was down, and the drip coffee was just okay. Dinner was decent but felt a bit overpriced. We had the smoked salmon spread, Olympia halibut cakes, meatloaf, grilled halibut, grilled salmon, and roast chicken. Everything was cooked well, just not particularly memorable. Sheep Mountain Lodge is situated in Glacierview, on the Glenn Hwy. If you're heading to Valdez, you'll pass it, on your left. It's very imposing yet inviting, and has wonderful mountain views As we had decided that our normal place to eat in Glennallan is no longer "on the menu" so to speak, we decided to try Sheep Mountain Lodge, on the way home from Valdez. It's a beautifully situated Lodge, nestling in the mountains. There's cabins too, and some RV sites. It looks like somewhere I'd love to stay to be honest. The main building where you go for dinner is pretty classy, i have to say, and fortunately, it's not crammed with tons of stuff on the walls. Less is more, in my opinion. Our server seated us at the far end away from the bar, and we had a good view of the mountains. I honestly wasn't feeling super hungry, so i decided to go for a couple of appetizers. I ordered the Crab, Spinach, and Artichoke dip with bread, and the Fry Basket. Blake got a Burger entree. I was presented with a medium skillet of dip, and eight pieces of bread, and an enormous tray/basket of fries. I ordered appetizers, as I thought they'd be smaller bites but these were enormous, and i admit to feeling somewhat daunted by the amount of food. The Dip was beautifully creamy, and the bread nicely toasted. Very moreish. Blake says I'm gonna get gout. The fries were wonderfully crispy. I was putting them between the slices of bread (What us English call a "chip butty") and smearing crab, spinach, artichoke dip all over it. I was pretty disgusting, i admit it. But the meager amount that i was able to eat, i did enjoy it. This would easily feed 2 people. I don;t know about the rest of the appetizers, but these 2 are definitely sharing plates - so a word to the wise. His Burger entree wasn't nearly so large as my 2 appetizers lol. But anyway, I would definitely come back, and in hindsight, I'd order differently than i did this time, because we had an enormous amount of food, and not an enormous amount of appetite. I can only speak for the lodge itself. I did not stay here, but I intend to the next time I travel to/from Valdez-Anchorage. It's a great halfway point to break up that really long drive (about 300 miles). We stopped here on the way just to check it out and ended up ordering a beer and slice of homemade rhubarb pie with vanilla ice cream. Yum. Hungry on the way home, we stopped back in, this time for dinner. We were hoping to eat on the patio, which offers beautiful views, but the three or so tables outside were occupied. We ordered the salmon chowder, salmon beurre blanc and the rockfish salad, and the rhubarb pie again. Everything was delicious, and despite being full, I grabbed a big chocolate chip cookie on the way out. They also offer molasses and oatmeal raisin. At the very least, stop here. The staff is super friendly. The views are fantastic. The food is delicious. read more

What a surprise gem! This location is in glacier view, at a small lodge overlooking the mountains. The food was really tasty and worth the expensive price (everything in AK is expensive ...). We stopped here on a weekend in August on our way to Valdez. Since we started driving around 6pm we would have gotten to Valdez late at night. Our friends booked it for us and they were a little familiar as they had been here before. I had not. This is a little place on the side of the highway that has a little lodge where you check in, get coffee from their espresso bar, or breakfast from their kitchen. We stayed at the little cabins that had three rooms total in one cabin, each room had two beds queen maybe or double twin. (really UNcomfortable, I slept better the next night sleeping in a tent on the ground) there were two communal bathrooms that were pretty nice in a cabin not too far along the boardwalk. I'm not sure who used those bathrooms or if it was mainly for the three cabins close by. There were bigger cabins up the way and they also had tent and RV sights as well. They had a greenhouse where there were lots of flowers and fruits/veggies growing. I believe they served breakfast and dinner at the lodge but we never ate inside. For breakfast we ordered it to be dropped off at our rooms at a certain time the next morning. They had a paper you fill out with multiple choice questions on what to eat. It was a pretty good breakfast. They even had a hit run that was connected the the bathrooms but because of COVID it was closed. I didn't bring a swim suit anyways so that would have been disappointing either way. They hold events here as our friends had been here for a wedding before with a cute little gazebo down a path. There was an open grassy area to play games or kids to run around. In the rooms there were only two beds, a night stand and a table in the room. The bathroom had a sink and a toilet and a shower. Overall cute little place to stay, perfect for like a anniversary date weekend or a family gathering place. Check the website for details on room rates. Stayed here with my tour group after a day spent hiking Matanuska Glacier! I was pleasantly surprised how cute and cozy the cabins were. It was so spacious. It was only me and my friend but the room could have comfortably fit four. We had cabin number 3. With this pandemic I always worry about cleaning practices. I'm happy to report the cabin was clean, smelled good, sheets were clean and fresh so was the bathroom. Loved the fact it had a kitchenette with microwave, Keurig coffee maker with coffee and tea options. Our tour group preordered our dinner and breakfast. It's a no frills menu simple and delicious food. I had the Halibut Tacos with garlic aioli and my friend had the bacon burger. The cinnamon roll we had for dessert was good big enough to share! This place is an oasis after a tiring day! 5 stars! read more

We stumbled upon this restaurant driving from Anchorage to Valdez, Alaska. We travel with the tour guide who told us this area was very popular in which to find sheep wandering on the sides of the mountain. This restaurant and lodge was certainly appropriately named! There were not many food options in between these two cities, as we found ourselves driving through very rural areas. Sheep Mountain Lodge was the perfect place to stop on our journey. The restaurant is literally fitted into a hillside. There was an area for campers to hang out, as well as a few small lodging areas available. The restaurant was small itself, but it was quaint. Our tour guide told us in advance that they had amazing homemade cookies. She was right! We stocked up on these baked goods for the week, as we found there weren't many food options off the beaten path in our time at Alaska. The cookies were HUGE and so good. Believe it or not, this small hometown restaurant was known for its dessert. Voted best dessert in Alaska, we had to give it a try! Definitely delicious. The other food on the menu was okay--nothing fancy, nothing awful. We had to keep in mind that this was a small family business in the mountains. We did appreciate a home cooked meal though! The bathrooms here were very nice! They had additional restrooms out back behind the restaurant, and they were definitely nice for back country roads. They also had some neat exhibits around the restaurant including a huge bull mousse you could pose and take pictures with! The beautiful flowers on the hillside made the stop extremely worth it. I want to start by saying...Sheep Mountain Lodge was the BEST place I stayed at the whole time I was in Alaska, bar none. The staff was the best I came across the whole trip - they were all very pleasant and friendly. They were more than willing to help make your stay enjoyable. I was on a motorcycle tour August 2022. One of my Bucket List items was to walk on a glacier. When I arrived at the lodge, I saw they had a helicopter and did tours to the glacier. I checked into taking a flight up to the glacier but was told they were done for the day. I was bummed... Remember, I said the staff was friendly and wanted to help you enjoy you stay, well David (I think) saw I was bummed, he made a call, got in touch with Mark (owner of lodge/pilot) told him I was looking to do a glacier tour and Mark said sure and off I went. David/Mark could have said, "Sorry, we're done for the day" - but instead, they made it happen and I was able to check an item off my Bucket List. Mark's knowledge of glaciers was phenomenal, he was more than willing to share his knowledge and answer all my questions. My cabin (#2 if not mistaken) was fabulous. It has a great view and after all, the views/sights were the reason I went to Alaska. It's the view I think of most when I reflex on my trip. The restaurant was outstanding, with a great selection of dishes. The desert I had was pie and it was made on site. When I come back to Alaska - without a doubt, I'll be going back to Sheep Mountain Lodge! read more

Came in late July for the restaurant - stayed at nearby Alpenglow - and couldn't have found a better spot. We had the fried cauliflower and salmon spread to start, and both delicious. I then had the halibut, which was perfectly cooked, moist with a beautiful sauce. Really outstanding. My wife had fish & chips, which she loves, and says they were the best she ever had. The couple with us had salmon, and after I traded bites, I have to say it was as fresh and delicious as any I've had. Had the strawberry rhubarb pie, which we were too full to eat there, but made for a fantastic treat the next day. The staff was great - pleasant and gracious. We plan to return to the area, and will definitely return. read more

I'd read about Sheep Mountain Lodge a few years when I was searching for new hiking trails, so it's been on my to do list for awhile. We ended up there totally by accident today though, so I actually didn't even access the lodge nor the trails. We were on a beauiful long drive through the misty magical mountains of Brigadoon and it was too rainy to fire up the grill. Wet, cold and hungry we sought shelter at the adorable log cabin-y restaurant. Immediately I thought to myself "why the F doesn't Anchorage have places like this?!?" Apart from the fact places this quaint and warm, by their very nature only exist in rural Alaska... AND the view, even in the rain is fuck-all stunning, the food is actually really damn good. How the hell they manage to keep fresh produce stocked when restaurants in Anchorage can't manage this feat had me scratching my head. Pride, I imagine, and actually giving a shit about your customers may have something to do with it as well. The ambiance, the food (reasonably priced), and the service were all excellent. My hummus appetizer (homemade) was excellent. Feta, real feta that made me want to weep. Legit kalamata olives. Snappy veggies. This east coast girl has missed this kind of food since I moved to Alaska. Lets be honest, Anchorage is a culinary wasteland of sorts. So the drive to Sheep Mountain will be repeated. Fantastic food (I highly recommend the halibut and carrot cake), beautiful clean cabin accommodations and an incredible scenic helicopter flight! We saw a bull moose, sheep, black bear, mountain goats and a golden eagle on top of the awe inspiring mountains and glacier! So many fun activities near by from hiking Lion's Head, to walking on Matanuska Glacier and Gunsight Mountain is on our hiking list for next year. I used to come here all the time as a kid and loved it but either I have a bad memory or they changed management because the food is not good... come here for the pie (it's renowned) but it's not a great eat or great service. An excellent option to have for dining while in the area of Glacier View. We decided to stop for an early dinner before heading back to Anchorage after a full day of sightseeing and are so glad that we did. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess/waitress who seated us and were quickly offered drink options and a dinner menu. The temperature was a little chilly out, so we ordered a hot cocoa for my daughter along with our local beers, meals and soups all around. Their fresh tomato bisque really hit the spot warming me up, along with their light and fresh BLT sandwich. Cute, quaint cabin with friendly service, tasty beers from the Alaskan local breweries and friendly service really make this a great option for the area. We stayed a couple of nights in one of their newer, bigger cabins at the start of a week long road trip in late August. On the way back, we spent a night in one of their older cabins. We prefer their bigger cabins and we think it is worth the modest increase in price over their older cabins. A friend who lives in Glacier View joined us for dinner on two nights; really good food and nice, friendly service. On one of the days, we went blueberry picking and even though we were late in the season, managed enough for a great pie when we got back home. On this trip, we were berry picking a quarter-mile from hunters that were glassing the valley below for their game. We like the people who own and operate this lodge, and it will be a regular place for us to stay when in this area. read more

Stayed at Sheep Mountain 3-4 times since 2018. Really looked forward to this two day stay in early May 2022 after a brutal motorcycle run up from the States through Canada. Unfortunately we were sorely disappointed. The restaurant was closed. The hot tub was out of service and the staff was disorganized. I emailed inquiring about lodging days before arrival with no response, so I made reservations trusting that Mark would take care of us. Spent an overnight at Sheep Mtn Lodge in the Mountain House. Good accommodations, clean and tidy. Had dinner at the lodge. Really, really good! Definitely didn't expect this at a roadside lodge! Burgers were awesome! My sister-in-law had the halibut tacos and I was blessed to have one! Far, far better than the halibut I had at Ray's in Seward!! We also ate breakfast at the lodge and collectively had the breakfast burrito (excellent), French toast (daughter loved despite being a picky eater) and the healthy start (wife and sister-in-law both loved). Trails are nice. Views are nice. Everything here is good. Would love to visit in the winter for X-country skiing! Excellent visit! read more

After a long day of ice climbing on the Matanuska Glacier, my husband and I were looking for a filling meal to replenish our energy! Sheep Mountain Lodge did not disappoint!! I ordered a garden salad, a bowl of chili, and a jumbo sourdough roll. My husband ordered a mountain chiliburger. The salad was crisp and fresh, the chili was absolutely delicious, and the roll truly was jumbo! My meal really couldn't have been any better. We washed it all down with a very affordable bottle of wine, which was particularly lovely since we couldn't find a place to buy a bottle of our own. We took a slice of pie to go and ate it later at our bed and breakfast. Seriously, don't leave without trying the pie!! The atmosphere was that of your typical Alaskan lodge. There were no frills, but that is a-okay with me. They did have free wifi, which was great because I did not have any cell service in Glacier View. We were able to send a few pictures and check-in with our family back at home. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. If you're travelling along the Glenn Highway or visiting the Matanuska Glacier, stop by and have some chili and pie. Your belly will thank you! read more

Cabins were great! Spacious room with kitchenette. All the little things that make the stay comfortable like shelves and hooks in all the right places. Very comfortable beds. Bathroom is handy because the sink is separate from shower and toilet. Shower is a little small but good hot water. One of the best rooms we stayed in during our 2 week trip in Alaska - too bad it was only one night while moving from Anchorage to Kennecott. Great views around the cabins. It was raining the night we stayed but they have binoculars in the room to look for sheep. We also ate dinner and breakfast at the restaurant which was good too - make sure to try the fresh baked pie! read more

We had a fabulous 2 night stay at the Sheep Mountain Lodge. We were in the area to trek across the Matanuska Glacier. Although the lodge property doesn't have a direct view of the glacier as a few other motels do, the rooms are beautiful, well-appointed, clean, modern yet rustic. We loved have a well-stocked kitchen even though we only did breakfasts in the room. We had 2 dinners in the lodge. The food was great and the service was friendly and efficient. You can tell that customer satisfaction is a top priority. The place is rustic, clean, and the staff is very friendly. We stayed the weekend on the premises with our RV. The grounds are immaculate. The cabins look amazing. As some reviews have stated, it's right off the highway so be prepared for road noise. When there isn't passing traffic it is serene and peaceful. The surrounding views are stunning. They are a number of surrounding trails but they are more like walking paths so I wouldn't classify them as a traditional hike. It was fall when we visited so there were blueberries abound! Our only complaints about the stay are the location of the RV pads. You are basically paying to stay in their parking lot. Doesn't look like much thought or effort was put into this part. Additionally there were tractors and other equipment being used for quite some time during our stay which ruined the ambiance. On to the food - we were so looking forward to our meal at the restaurant. We had looked at reviews and were ready to be wow-ed. Unfortunately that was not our experience. We had the Matsu burger, chowder, grilled cheese & chili. All were tasty but did not wow us with flavor. We tried ordering beers and they were out of 2 that we attempted. It went downhill from there. We felt basically ignored by the staff and then our check was brought to us with out even checking with us. Our drinks were not regularly refilled. We explained we were interested in dessert. Again, rave reviews were found online so we were ready to be wowed. We had the strawberry rhubarb pie and glacier cookie. The pie was good. The cookie was awful and I was tempted to send it back. It was overcooked and cold. Based off the location we are impressed with what they have to offer but given our experience we don't have plans to return for a meal. read more
