My girlfriend and I had an early dinner here and enjoyed it very much. We were greeted by a…read morefriendly waitress (Jennette, I believe) who opened a lovely patio setting just for us. I had the standard cheeseburger but with jalepenos added. Jenette warned me about the voracity of the jalepenos, given the amount of seeds, but I did not flinch. Know what you're saying and who you are saying it to, Jennette. It was indeed a spicy burger, but also excellent. It was a solid half pounder and cooked to perfection and had some quality bun to go with it too. My girlfriend got the patty melt or something, which is a different way to say "burger with bread instead of a bun", and she did so in shocking disregard of the the proximity to the celebration of our nation's independence. What kind of Scandinavian bullshit is a burger with bread?! Despite the proletariat, and embarrassingly treasonous nature of her meal, she liked it a lot. Our waitress was great. The kitchen did great. The Inn is very Alaska-y and I assume the rooms are good too. Highly recommend it to anyone passing though.

Great food and portion sizes. It was a warm and cozy place to be after a long day of driving and…read morevisit to Wrangell St Elias Natl Park. We started with dessert first (why not) of a delicious homemade rhubarb pie in a little mini tin with vanilla ice cream on top. They also had blueberry and apple as choices. Then we shared the piping hot corn fritters that came with honey butter. Super good but super filling. The Reuben was amazing. Very tender meat and delicious homemade sauce with hand cut French fries. Seems like the local hangout spot. And was greeted by a very friendly dog on the way in! Wine and beer options as well.

Options are limited when it comes to finding a place to stay in this corner of the state...but…read morethere is none better, I dare say, in the entire state as Gakona Lodge! We pulled in later than I wanted and had to leave way too early, but the time we had in Cabin #3 was fantastic! Ample room for a family of five in a rustic cabin set in this amazing valley, alongside a swift moving creek, within walking distance of good eats...it is a perfect roadside oasis! We ate at the bar that night since the restaurant dining room was closed...mostly pub fare...but healthy portions and with a touch of someone who cares hand cut fries, a hint of tarragon in the tartar sauce,...best damn cheese curds I've ever had...holy crap...the curds were like garlic nuggets...and cheese! Someone is doing great things with somewhat limited offerings. Even the tap list is subject to what's available...lucky for them there's Gakona Brewing (sounds like a guy in his basement) down the road knocking out a couple kegs of beer for them to keep the ale flowing! After dinner, we made it back to our cabin and watched a DVD on how to skin a bear...because...ALASKA! WTF NOT? Cozy warm beds and a good nights sleep...a simple, but adequate breakfast of fruit, AMAZING HOMEMADE SCONES, coffee and juices put us back on the road...I wish i could have spent days here in this little oasis...maybe next time when I have a little more time on my hands... Thank You for being the perfect little getaway from it all!

The owners were running the kitchen and they were so modest and kind. We wished we could have joined for dinner the night before but we showed up a few minutes after the kitchen had closed. The atmoshpere in the saloon/bar and the restaurant bring you back to long lost times. It's charming and authentic. You can tell the people running this place really care. It's clean, they think of everything you could want/need and I believe they undersell themselves. They could charge a lot more than what they're charging right now. It was our cheapest and best hotel stay. These types of places would be $400plus in California. Thanks for the lovely stay!

She said, how her "mother made it" with pride in her eyes. We have never had Russian food and boy were we delighted! We shared the rich flavorful mushroom medley and Chebureky, light fluffy bread, like filo, filled with well seasoned meat. They open at 5, we will have to plan on being on the road later so we can enjoy her delicious food as we pass through. The lodge is cozy and it felt like we were sitting down at Grandmas table. Plan on eating here, you will be blessed! Did I mention everything is fresh made with fresh ingredients??? It is!

We ordered the Cornish hen with salad, Mushroom Medley with bread and homemade tea. The Mushroom medley arrived first, it was so good and full of flavor, matched perfectly with the toasted bread. The cornish hen was seasoned and cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy inside. The homemade tea smelled so good and tasted divine! Although there is a For Sale sign in the front, not sure that will happen when it gets sold. So if you are in the area, stop by and check it out before it changes ownership!
