Glenallen is just barely keeping itself from fading into a ghost town and there isn't much going on in Copper River. There aren't any decent restaurants for...a while. It scores most it's points for simply being open when almost nothing else in the area is. Come, have a beer, gawk at Mt Drum (if it's out). The Lake Louise Lodge does not respond to email inquiries for rates, you need to call. We checked in at night, and the bar was bustling. There were lots of people dancing to live music, there was not a single mask in sight. This should terrify most but, sadly, masks have been made political by people that trust politicians more than they trust scientists. We got Room #2, dubbed "Old Timers". It bordered the kitchen and was really loud, great for me (I'm a sound sleeper), but probably not for the average Old Timer. There was a sauna in the room, with instructions. It would've been a great respite from the -20 temps outside. But it was stuffed with supplies, and looks like it hasn't been used in years. Maybe take down the sauna instructions, then? The room was $131.25, including taxes. It was a warm room to stay in, with a private bathroom. But that's about it. On the plus side, this is probably the darkest place within a 3 hour drive of Anchorage (in fact, I found it by looking at a light pollution map of Alaska). And we were lucky enough to catch an absolutely incredible northern lights show!

It's clean, they think of everything you could want/need and I believe they undersell themselves. They could charge a lot more than what they're charging right now. We pulled in later than I wanted and had to leave way too early, but the time we had in Cabin #3 was fantastic! Ample room for a family of five in a rustic cabin set in this amazing valley, alongside a swift moving creek, within walking distance of good eats...it is a perfect roadside oasis! We ate at the bar that night since the restaurant dining room was closed...mostly pub fare...but healthy portions and with a touch of someone who cares hand cut fries, a hint of tarragon in the tartar sauce,...best damn cheese curds I've ever had...holy crap...the curds were like garlic nuggets...and cheese! Someone is doing great things with somewhat limited offerings. Even the tap list is subject to what's available...lucky for them there's Gakona Brewing (sounds like a guy in his basement) down the road knocking out a couple kegs of beer for them to keep the ale flowing! After dinner, we made it back to our cabin and watched a DVD on how to skin a bear...because...ALASKA! WTF NOT? Cozy warm beds and a good nights sleep...a simple, but adequate breakfast of fruit, AMAZING HOMEMADE SCONES, coffee and juices put us back on the road...I wish i could have spent days here in this little oasis...maybe next time when I have a little more time on my hands...
