Explains everything for the newbies. Patient and erudite. Such poise in such a young person. It's a small dining area. Clearly a local fave. Phone was ringing off the hook. But many clearly knew their way around. A few ppl walked in, placed their order and said they'd be back at such and such a time. There's only a small kitchen We got to mean Domenic, our cook A sweetheart and a skilled chef. The food itself seems straightforward and pretty simple, but each dish had its own flavor which I think is pretty hard to do and each was so satisfyingly delicious. I think I would've bn satisfied with just the menudo and the half order of nachos, but didn't know it at the time we ordered so we went on and got the El Faro burger, my friend ordered the cheese enchiladas and of course we got the chile Christmas on the side. Fantastic! And a tremendous value. We were quite shocked that our entire meal, including 2 sodas came to less that $40, such that we left double that bc these small businesses are such treasures and we want such places to remain in business. Seemed there were quite a few locals but also lots of travelers coming through. I certainly plan to be back soon!

Wow, what a bummer…read more...   We had that classic frustrating restaurant experience here. We came in for a late lunch. No drink order taken for about 10 minutes. We wait and wait, finally get water, more waiting, finally place our order. People who came in five minutes after us get their drinks & food long before us. We wait another 10 minutes. Finally get our entrée and salad about a half hour after we placed our order. Everyone else in the small restaurant seems to get their food in a normal amount of time.   I know kitchens can get backed up, and wires get crossed. So I asked the waitress in a friendly tone why it took so long. She looked at me with an expression like, "Huh!? You jerk, we're not McDonalds," and basically shrugged. So yeah, that is frustrating. To wait way too long, the waitress doesn't realize we've been sitting there, and basically doesn't give a s---.   And the food was okay. Did not scratch my itch for classic New Mexican food, although I guess that's not what they're trying to do. We split the chili rellenos and a small salad. Came to $31.

This place gets a lot of good reviews but then also saw a few one stars also…read more I didn't know what to expect but glad I had a great experience here. I was up in Taos for Saturday and chose to stay upstairs of this restaurant for the night. This place is about 45 min from Taos proper. The upstairs studio was nice, and has nice views of the area. The property also has a hot tub, but I didn't use it. There isn't much out in Tres Piedras, but this place makes up for it. Also great view of the night sky. I spied a beautiful moon from upstairs. Dogs are allowed here and ample parking available. Ice also for sale here. Nice, outdoor patio space too. Staff here were really nice and I had 3 people constantly check in on me. I had a margarita and a beer and my total came to $8. Chips and salsa were on the house. It was also really wonderful to hang out on Saturday night to hear the live music. Gary Reynolds was the musician and he was excellent! They also had all sorts of fresh baked goods for sale, pies and even smudge sticks for sale here. Will have to give a try next time. There is also some really neat history about this building and worth learning the history about the place. I had a good time and definitely would come back.

I was hungry--on a camping trip--and hoping for some great Frito Pie...but as soon as the guac and chips showed up, I knew it was all going wrong. The chips were a few days too old, and the sad squeeze of store-bought guac tasted mostly of salt and oil. I was told the staff had "forgotten" to put the beer in the fridge, but helpfully (?) also provided a cup of ice to pour it over. I had not known we did that. When it eventually arrived, the Frito Pie had been sitting so long that the Fritos were soggy little flaps. The chili was just beans, no beef, and completely lacking in flavor--no cumin, no garlic, no tomato, nothing you'd reasonably expect. And either no red Hatch chile, or so little as to make no difference. It tasted like it came from a large can. The toppings, pale tomatoes and a few wisps of salad, didn't add anything. I'm not saying it's easy to make Frito Pie, but it's not rocket surgery. I've had it all over the state, and never mind SF Plaza-quality...this is hands-down the worst from Aztec to Zuzax.

Its a little unconventional: the burger is swimming in the chile sauce (see photo), so instead of eating it with your fingers you have to cut it with a knife and eat with a fork after sopping up the sauce with the bun. God it was good. Couldn't finish all my fries, too stuffed. The proprietor is a hoot. On the way out I noticed the overstuffed fruit turnovers in the bakery case. I would have died for one of those, but I was so stuffed there was no way.
