“My favorite sandwiches are the Efrain, with turkey, cheese and green chiles, and the super tasty turkey pastrami Reuben.”

I think What used to be a charming and warm country store is now a LIQUOR STORE with some overpriced garbage food and overpriced (by at least a dollar) gas. You HAVE to be desperate to stop here.

By the time I saw this place, I was willing to pay more. I've been here maybe 3 times, and always when I'm leaving Colorado and heading towards Santa Fe, hence they are the proverbial oasis in the desert. The store itself is fairly clean and large with a lot of coolers. Their selection of snacks is varied, they have plenty of ice and drinks, you will even find some local made spices, chiles, wines and a few knick knacks. Everything can be found cheaper somewhere else, it's just a matter of how far you want to drive. If you're looking at basic road trip snacks, so you spent an extra $1, who cares? For multiple items that could be a different story. Their single unisex restroom is kind of dirty and I always fear the day it will be out of order! Luckily that hasn't happened yet, but there is always a line. I do think they could be better about the maintenance though. The lot leaves enough room for parking and using the gas pumps without getting tangled. The gas prices were higher than we had been seeing on our trip, but not gouging higher. If they were anywhere else, the prices and lines would be 3 stars. But see above, I'm always relieved to see them when we take this route.

Check the sale ads every week, even better get their app which has a lot of coupons. Some stuff is cheaper here, some is more expensive. They do add 10% to your total at the end, but it's my understanding they mark everything at their cost and the 10% is just their markup. It's not tax. Food items aren't taxed. You can find Mexican cokes and Mexican chips, which is rad.

She says he approached her demanding she open her bag for searching - she hadn't been in the store for five minutes. After he searched her bag, he told her to check in with him before she exited the store so he could check her bag once more. She noted that he was unkind and forceful in his tone throughout the exchange. My mother is a 5'6, world-traveled minister and (again) visibly elderly. Such an experience has never happened to her. She was astonished, but peacefully complied nonetheless. It should be noted that my mother is a woman of color with darker golden brown skin and curly hair styled in an afro-like way. The security guard was a native-Spanish speaker of sort. It's no secret that colorism, texturism and complete anti-Afrocentricity runs deep within Spanish speaking communities, but to execute such bias on a an elderly, visibly harmless woman is ludicrous. We were all visiting NM from out of town. I arrived later than my parents did. When I was told the story, I went to the store and complained to the manager. He came out to the parking lot and spoke with my mom. Although he was kind, he was not as apologetic as I would hope for a manager to be. Lastly, my mom's friend (who is not a POC) told her that she never has problems in this store and has gone in there with a book bag many times. In conclusion, we will never return to this grocer again and advise POCs of darker shade tones and/or non-Spanish speaking heritage to beware.
