So I'll be completely honest, being a person of color I've never had a white person cut my hair. I'm headed to a wedding in a few days and the groom wanted us all to come here. My first question was do they know how to cut my type of hair? He assured me but I said let me call anyway to ask. The receptionist laughed and put me at ease right away. She pointed me into the right direction and Kelly did not disappoint. We had great convo and she constantly asked if I was okay and my thoughts on the cut. Friendly and talented team, but after 3 visits I can confirm that you need to double check your service option before taking a chair as I have paid 3 different prices for the exact same cut. "Would you like a scalp treatment " during the wash does not disclose the cost....but you just got dinged. I received the worst haircut I've ever gotten here from Danielle. I was extremely dissatisfied and showed the general manager photos of my hair where there was a gouge and it was nothing like the reference photographs. They asked me to come in for a reservice with Renee the following night out of my own schedule. At that point they were rushed, she was rude and hurried, and did the work in five minutes and told me look it's all better when all they really did was even out the atrocious job by the previous stylist. I would recommend avoid this place at all costs. Their only goal is getting people in and out as quickly as possible and they have no care for hair. I've never received an "expensive" or "nice" haircut before, I had a barber I trusted back where I used to live and never strayed far from that. In all honesty, I was nervous about what this would entail but I was thoroughly impressed with Shear Excellence. The high-quality service even preceded the haircut. I was offered a beer or whiskey as I waited for the chair to open up and was asked throughout my time there if I'd like a refill. Marie did great work in finding a happy medium between my binge and purge hairstyles. I enjoyed the cut and thought the price was certainly worth it. Marie was kind and thoughtful and offered what she thought would help. I too was so impressed to receive a hand written thank you note in the mail a few days later. I'll be back. read more

I've been a Shear Excellence customer for maybe seven years. Over that time they have been consistent with their hospitality and providing a good haircut. Their stylists have actively worked with me to achieve what I was looking for and often made it better. My current stylist is Renee and there's a reason I keep going back to her. She's funny, friendly and very good at what she does. I don't expect her to recall my name or our past conversations after time has passed as lord knows how many cuts she's given in that time, but she does. I appreciate the extra level Shear Excellence puts into making it a good experience for the customer and will continue to keep on going. read more

I recently moved to Charlotte and have been trying to find a good barber. I stumbled upon the positive reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a chance despite the $39 price tag. I was greeted with a smile and was asked if I wanted a drink (bourbon on the rocks). It wasn't long before someone was ready for me. I spoke with the lady and showed her detailed pictures of what I was looking to get. Moreover, I did ask her if she felt comfortable in her ability to get it correct and she said she could do it. The end result was okay, it was comparable to getting a haircut at hair cuttery, but at more than double the price. The haircut did look similar, but she didn't cut along my hairlines; it will be problematic when my hair grows out (meaning I'll need to get a hair cut in about 10 days so I don't look ridiculous). The quality of the haircut I received did not justify the price. Unless you plan on having 4-5 drinks, I wouldn't recommend. Perhaps the free drinks is to get you buzzed so you have a less regrettable experience? Good customer service though! read more

At first we were a little concerned because there are several reviews on Yelp saying that the stylists were not good at their jobs and it was pretty pricy. We went there on a Friday morning for the first time and the staff was very friendly. Katrina was, and has been my boyfriend's stylist since then. We just want a basic and natural-looking haircut; Katrina did a great job. The almost $40 haircut also includes shampoo, hot towel, and a short massage. There is a waiting area with comfortable sofas. People can get drink (including alcohol). What a great men's grooming center!! Renee is luckily back as a stylist and at a great location in Dilworth. It's easy to park and restaurants all around. Great haircut experience! To be honest, I picked the place based on, yup, yelp reviews, but I still didn't know if I would like the pampering experience vs my normal: wait for 30min for a 5min haircuit routine. I made an appointment through their website (for the next day) and they responded back fairly quickly with confirmation. You can also try to fit yourself in if you call and see if there are openings, but I like the fact that there is an appointment system and that you don't spend a lot of down time in a waiting chair. I came in about 8min ahead of my scheduled appointment and had to fill out some more paperwork since it was my first visit. I was offered a beverage, which I took full advantage of... the hostess/greeter.... (what do you call the person that greets you at the desk at a hair place?) ran and got me a beer, with a koozie.... nice touch! I went and sat in one of the four super comfortable leather chairs at the front of the salon. Looking around from the waiting room, the place really caters to guys... tvs around, wood finishes, and just an overall relaxed vibe to the place. The hair products aren't really in-your-face here and I did notice that each station had a full-length mirror tilted at an angle so you can really have a great view of yourself. The other thing I noticed that the guys that were getting their haircuts seemed really relaxed. Sara, my stylist, came over and introduced me and lead me to her station. I talked to her about how I normally cut my hair while she took everything in. My hair had gotten pretty long so I left it up to her and she did a great job. Super professional and we chatted a little bit. She was super quiet and did acknowledge that that's her personality, but I can tell she is really good at her craft. I just sat back and enjoyed my haircut, shampoo, neck/back massage, and beer. I left with a new look and super relaxed. Would I come back? Recently I went to this Dilworth location and got Erika to cut my hair. She was so helpful and had so many wonderful suggestions after I told her what I wanted. Review update: after I got home and really looked at my hair, I realized I'd just gotten the worst, most expensive haircut, that I've had in the past 2 years. The hairdresser was really nice and gave a great back and head massage, but does not know how to do a fade. The owner got back to me after after my initial post and offered to have me come back in to fix my hair: unfortunately I had already gone back to NYC. The staff was friendly, and the salon had a good ambiance. I enjoyed the complementary beer, head shampoo, and the neck and shoulder massage that comes with every haircut. The price is a bit steep: $39 for a men's haircut. It only costs $15-20 in NYC for a quality haircut with the beer. And we all know the rent and cost of living is much higher there. Overall great place, but I would only recommend it if they dropped the price and improved on their skills. Maybe other hairdressers there are better than the one I had. read more

I have to update my review after finding out today both Nikki and Victoria left. They are exceptional stylist and I will be posting as soon as they start officially at their new salon. The environment and staff at Shear Excellence is exceptional. I have always had an exceptional experience, but the main reason for that exceptional experience was because of the detail to attention and perfect cut every time I received from Nikki. With Nikki no longer here, Shear Excellence has lost two regulars and my referral. I have updated my review lowering it from 5 stars to 3 because I have no good or bad comments regarding the other stylist at Shear Excellence. I can only say the loss of Nikki and Victoria was huge and I will not be returning. It took me 6 months before I found someone that knew my hair, the style and I could trust to do a great job every time.
