Was really looking forward to having the BBQ here again as it had been a couple years since I ate here. I always get the pulled pork, cornbread, and slaw. Iwas extremely disappointed! The BBQ - overpriced for what you get now, hardly any smoke flavor to the meat, and huge chunks of big blobs of pure fat mixed in. I spent half the time eating, spitting out the disgusting blobs of it. The Slaw - YUCK!! What was once another treat, is soggy, bland, with way to strong a vinegar favor. That's all I could taste! The Cornbread - Again, YUCK! What was once a highlight of their combo plate, being sweet, moist, and a good serving. Is now bland, undercooked in some parts, dry and over cooked in other parts. The service wasn't much better than their food now. The staff were fast food lackadaisical in attitude, a far cry from the pleasant, friendly atmosphere they once had. They advertise as being open by 11:00 but the doors were locked until 11:30. Not good, and I should have known the rest of my visit would be just as bad. My last visit will be just that, the last time I go there. What ​was once one of my favorite summertime treats, is now no better than chain cafeteria fare. Woefully disappointing. Won't be returning. We have been coming here for BBQ during the summer for years. This summer we just gave them three chances. And they are OUT. Each time we have come, they have been out of corn bread and cheesy potatoes, but tonight, they had both. So exciting! $75 (for 2 adult and 1 kids meal plus drinks) and 40 minutes later, we were informed that they were out of the cheesy potatoes. Requested baked beans as an alternative. These were taken from the steam table and were cold on top, and room temperature further in. When I brought them back and asked for hot beans, they were replaced from the same steam table container but then heated up in the microwave. I couldn't eat them as they still weren't very hot, and I was a little afraid of the temp they were in the heating table. (I am worried about the effect of the 2 bites I had). Pulled pork was ok. I asked to speak to a manager before we left, but only an assistant manager was available. When I spoke to the assistant manager, he apologized and indicated that there was a big order they had to fill that came in 45 min before we walked in and had to be filled 15 min after we arrived. They ran out of the potatoes from that order, and it took them awhile to fill it. And apologized again. I told him about the baked beans and my concern about their temp in the steam table. He apologized. Told him we won't be back. "Sorry". Just wanted to let him know how disappointed I am before I posted this review. read more

Shaw's Ridge Farm is located inland off the beaten path on Route 224, just north of the Route 202 intersection in Sanford and not to be confused with Shaw Farm in Dracut, MA. Shaw's Ridge Farm, a family business, has been around for over 70 years and offers an ice cream shop and BBQ Barn (separate buildings with seating inside both), mini golf, and Springvale Nurseries all on the same premises. Shaw's Ridge Farm offers up to over 50 flavors of hard ice cream including such as moose tracks, ginger, and native blueberry. A few of the flavors are made sometimes including the Kahlua Brownie, Reese's Pieces, and Coconut Pineapple. They offer regular and large size cones/dishes, as well as sundaes, frappes, and banana splits. At the BBQ Barn (currently open Fri-Sun nights), the menu is simple offering pulled pork, chicken, BB ribs, smoked sausage, smoked chicken salad, Angus burgers, hot dogs, and sides (beans, fries, corn bread, slaw, cheesy potatoes). The BBQ sauce cups are from Ken's. I stopped here twice in the same day over the weekend, during the day for ice cream and in the evening for BBQ takeout. For ice cream, I had a regular size cup (2 scoops, the smallest size posted on the board) of Granny Shaw's Original Coffee ice cream ($2.95 plus tax), since I consider myself a major coffee-holic, hehe. The ice cream was on the very cold/frozen side when first scooped, so I decided to take it to go and let it soften up for a good 20 minutes in the sunlight. The ice cream had a sweet and good strong coffee flavor with a very creamy texture. Overall, the ice cream was very good (4 stars). Later on in the evening, I stopped by the BBQ Barn for takeout. I ordered a Pulled Pork Sandwich ($6.95) served with cole slaw & dill pickle spear and a side of Cheesy Potatoes ($1.95). The BBQ Barn dining area (self serve) has a long row of tables with a big John Deere sign and a gallery of framed pig art pictures hanging on the wooden walls. The food was good. The pulled pork (no BBQ sauce on it) sandwich on a artisan roll was tender and lean, slightly dry. The shredded cole slaw was refreshing, made with vinegar. The cheesy potatoes was very dense and fillling with potato chunks, cheese, and corn flakes. The Ken's Cannonball BBQ sauce was sweet and tangy. Overall, a great place to get homemade ice cream and BBQ. However, I wish that the kiddie size was offered here like other ice cream places for smaller appetites and for those watching calories. I have always heard great things about this place for years. But I just never made a chance to try their ice cream until this past summer. It was an incredibly hot day and I walked in blind not knowing what flavor I was craving but I figured I'd find something that would suit my fancy. I need to taste before I buy. I tasted about 3.. none of them struck my fancy at all. I did not want to buy the ice cream, but after tasting 3 flavors I felt obligated to buy an ice cream cone. I had to settle with pistachio kiddie cone. The kiddie cone was $3. What? who charges 3 bucks for a KIDDIE cone. I already thought the price was ridiculous.. so maybe 3 bucks it'll be a massive scoop of ice cream. It wasn't. The ice cream tasted like.. chemicals/plastic. I was not a fan at all. Appearance- Pretty farm setting, beautiful views, great place to come to relax and unwind! Service- The staff is pretty basic. Pay, they set you up with clubs and golf balls, and you are on your way. Experience: The mini golf course is pretty small, doesn't take too long to finish the course. Not too difficult. Great for a family who just wants to have a hour of fun. Its kind of secluded among flowers and greenery and is very quiet. Usually there's never many people playing, so you don't have to deal with being rushed. Price is so so. I don't think it gets any better than this. For some reason, the ice cream made in Maine is better than most of the rest of the country. I'm from the south and this is one of the few places I have found in Maine or New England that has BBQ that even comes close to that I grew up eating. The cheesy potatoes were excellent and the beans were good. The restaurant was clean and the outside patio is superb, with gorgeous flowers. The ice cream was some of the best, if not the best I have eaten in the six years we have lived in Maine. The staff was friendly and courteous. Shaw's Ridge Farm just off Route 224 is one of our favorite stops for Ice Cream. While all the local yocals huddle on the concrete pad down at Dairy Queen in the middle of town, we love enjoying Shaw's Ridge homemade ice cream out in the back yard where there are benches, picnic tables, swingsets for the kids, and miniature golf if you're' so inclined -- I'm not, I find it mini-golf boring! Anyway - the ice cream shop where you order is clean, and the staff is usually made up of friendly high school girls. But be prepared to to feel like an idiot as you scan down the long list of ice cream flavors trying to make up your mind as the counter girl stares at you, waiting. Further be prepared for everyone else around you to be staring at the long list of flavors in stupified wonder as well. The good news is that once you make up your mind, you'll be served a cone of one of the best-tasting ice creams in Southern Maine. The bad news is that they no longer serve the quantity that they used to. In 2012 and 2013, we'd walk in and order a "small" - which isn't exactly cheap to begin with - and receive a huge cone full of ice cream. As you walk out, everyone would stare and go, "That's a small???" These days (2014), a small is just a small again. Not sure what changed - but apparently someone caught on to the fact that the girls behind the counter were being very generous with the ice cream. Now -- a small is just a small, unfortunately. But still, the ice cream is good. The decor in the back sitting area is relaxing - with a model train overhead (sometimes running). Or just lounge out in the sun in the aforementioned back yard. Very zen. Great ice cream, good pulled pork, excellent location, away from hustle and bustle. No people here, making it very quiet and calming, but makes me worry for their success. Now I'm gonna need you helpers to go here with friends so the next time I am in Maine, they are still open. Just don't bring like EVERYbody you know so it stays kinda zen-like. Got it? Good. I recommend getting 2 flavors in a cup. The quality is great and the flavors are vibrant and blend well together. But the papered sugar cones are kind of hard to eat. This is the review of their ice cream - the best there is - bar none and reasonably priced - Shain is close but for outstanding creaminess and quality - this is the way ice cream use to taste and be made. Their homemade ice cream is wonderful and they give you generous portions. It is also a lovely place to stop by - benches, and lovely tables, and other activities - if you love ice cream - this is the place to be. We go to Main a bunch of times each year, and never miss Shaw's Ridge. Best ice cream I've ever had, and original intresting flavors. We've tried other home made ice cream stores in the area and none compare. Unfortunately they've closed for the season this weekend, and we're going up tomorrow. I consider myself a bit of an expert, I decided to visit all the local ic joints, shains, shaker pond, giffords, and even restaurants that make their own- SHAWS IS THE BEST! Their Grammy shaws coffee rocks, but don't eat too soon before bed it kept me up, wish they had a decaf version, also love kahlua brownie, and mocha chip:) plus the grounds here are so well manicured and have such fantastic beautiful flowers there's no better place to eat it as well! read more

We ordered an Ice Cream Soda, kiddie mint chocolate chip cone, regular coffee heath cone, these were good sized and the ice cream was good according to the kids.. my husband and I ordered large sugar free sundae's with whipped cream and nuts (no other toppings) these were $7.50 each and we got a tiny bit of ice cream maybe 1 small scoop each with a ton of whipped cream and the appropriate sprinkled nuts.. To say we were upset would be an understatement because we definitely did not get what we paid for.. the total of our bill was $32 and some change.. This ice cream was nothing special. I felt that they used too much dyes in it as well for some flavors.

The flavors they have are kind of boring, and the ice cream is not that great. It is over priced for it's quality and portion. There is paper wrapped around the cones, and I couldn't get it off, so I couldn't eat my cone. The best thing this business has going for it is it's beautiful land and gardens. My husband has been talking about this place for years. He frequented it as a child. We were traveling back through the area and he brought us there. Hands down some of the best ice cream I've had in Maine. A hidden gem in Sanford. The selection of flavors is fantastic. They have strawberry ice cream made with native strawberries, they have rum raisin, and peppermint stick! The staff were very nice. The size of the cones was quite generous. They have dipped waffle cones that looked delicious. There are lots of tables outside in a pretty area to sit with play-sets for younger children. I wish we lived closer. This was once my favorite ice cream spot in Sanford. And while the ice cream quality hasn't suffered, the service has become attrocious. Out of the entire staff their only seems to be one young lady who even cares about quality or customer service. I took the time to ask her name, i believe it was Chantel. (Though it might be something similar) The barbeque barn, was once again a favorite of mine. I'm appalled at how horribly the food was presented to me today, by their new "manager" of all people. I watched her mess up multiple orders just in the short time i was there. Fortunately for the rest of the customers and myself there was one adult working today.. (The young woman i mentioned already) She fixed her managers mistakes multiple times while i was there and then had to explain to her manager that quality and customer satisfaction is a must. And sadly enough she also had to explain that there is something wrong with putting out plates of food that look bad and have food falling off them. Sorry to say, I'll be going elsewhere from now on. Kudos to you young lady, you're the only reason i didn't throw my plate in the trash. read more
