I saw a post on Facebook and have been wanting to try Shawn's Sushi for a long time. I came here with my family and I am very much disappointed. The prices shown for sushi is very affordable which I think the business would do very well if they were clean and did things a bit differently. I feel gross after eating here. I am a huge supporter of local business but I would much rather eat at a place where the food is priced a bit more and prepared cleanly. I'm assuming the gentleman here is the owner. He runs the business all by himself with no help. It was very slow! While we were waiting for our five rolls to be made, I watched another couple walked in and sat themselves. Then, a USP man comes in with a package. I watched as the owner took off his gloves, grab the package, put it down, grabbed the old gloves and put them back on to prepare our food. Wow!!!! I was immediately shocked. I looked over and my husband was tending to my son who is getting bored at how long it's taking. The couple was now agitated and getting impatient that they were not helped yet. What I regret not doing is speaking up at that moment that we are going to leave and not eat there after seeing how he did not wash his hands!!!! I'm so disappointed. I took my son to the restroom to wash his hands after changing his diaper and there was no soap! The Softsoap bottle sitting on the sink was almost empty. I reached to pump it and it was filled with water. What is the owner of washing his hands with?! Is there a secret bottle in his kitchen? We are in a pandemic! Even if we weren't, I would want to know someone is washing their hands before they prepare my food, after they use the restroom, AND while making my food especially after they handle a package. We order and eat out on a regular basis and I know there are things we don't know nor see but to witness it firsthand and see it for myself, I'm honestly grossed out. I wish this man the best for his business but as a customer I will not return based on my personal experience. read more

Shawn's Sushi has a great selection of sushi, sashimi, and some teriyaki bowls for kids or your less-adventurous friends. I've visited half a dozen different times, tried several different rolls, and all of them have been great. That being said, every single time I've visited Shawn's Sushi I've been the only person in the restaurant. I don't get it. On a busy road, at the height of the dinner rush, you can stop by here and have the entire place to yourself (unless I'm there, I guess). The owner is always personable and the food is always fresh. So my wife was craving sushi and we were in the area, so decided to order to go. Pleasantly surprised at how much fresh fish is in each roll of sushi. Had the spicy smoked salmon roll, spider roll, spicy scallop roll, and miso and it was all surprisingly good. The scallop roll was packed with scallops. The spicy smoked salmon roll was good and just what my wife wanted. The spider roll may have needed a little bit more seasoning, but was packed with soft shell crab. The miso had a pretty strong amount of miso paste flavor in it. As an Asian who lived in the coastal cities with access to pretty amazing sushi before living in OKC, I was pretty impressed with this small individual owned sushi restaurant. The owner was pleasant and the amount of actual fish in each roll was substantial. There are a few other sushi places in town that are pretty good, but if you are in this area of town, I was actually pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the sushi from a place called Shawn's Sushi. read more

We're big fans of Shawn's. It's a great little neighborhood sushi place. The prices are very reasonable--it's all about the food not overly showy ambience. When you dine at most sushi places you'll likely be paying extra for a trendy vibe. Shawn's is really hard to beat for the price to quality ratio. If you want decent sushi for a good value that's not over-the-top fancy, this is the place for you. The service is always fast too. I often call in my orders and pick them up before going to work, and Shawn will have it rolled up ready in a flash and on time. Sometimes, I'll call in a large order for all my coworkers and the sushi is a big hit with all of them. The ingredients are quality, fresh, never cheap or fake. Cute, quaint little place with delicious food! We got bubble tea, egg rolls and sushi/sashimi; all were yummy! My only complaints concern the sashimi and Cajun roll; there were a couple sashimi pieces that still had scale/bone and there was still some crunchy shell on the crawfish in the Cajun sushi roll. I've been to most of the sushi joints in Oklahoma City and this place probably has the best overall value. Have I had better Japanese food with better ambience? Definitely, but I paid a lot more for it. The atmosphere could be better, but it's clearly a very casual sushi joint, so I am not going to hold that against them. In the past few months since my first visit, they have upgraded some of the tables to booths, which is clearly a step in the right direction. The premium rolls are good, but so are the cheap rolls. Some of their stuff is ridiculously cheap like their huge house salad with a great ginger dressing for $3.50 or avocado rolls for $3.00. And they don't charge extra for sides of spicy mayo/eel sauce, which actually happens at some places. Another humongous strength of Shawn's is that every time I've been there, 100% of the sushi is made by Shawn. Consistency is HUGE as far as sushi goes and one guy making all the sushi is a pretty significant factor as far as I'm concerned. That being said, if I were single, I'd probably take a first date to almost any other sushi place in OKC (Saii Asian Bistro or Neko probably), but for a convenient and affordable sushi fix with the girlfriend or my best buds, you can't really beat Shawn's. Don't go in expecting anything more than solid sushi at solid prices. For what it is though, I'd probably give them 5/5 if they added some cheap sake to the menu. read more

If I based my review for this place solely on atmosphere, I'd give it less stars, but they have food. I heard this place was good, but to me it was just alright. The rolls were just ok, I guess. We got a pink lady, spicy cowboy, lady love, and the spider roll. I couldn't taste any lemon in the lady love and the spider roll was awful. If you're wanting to try sushi for the first time, this isn't the best place to go. It's cheaper than most sushi places and Shawn, the owner, is super sweet, but there's absolutely no atmosphere. This quiet little joint is amazing. They will make anything you want to your order. They can make all the Sushi rolls vegetarian or VEGAN! They always have friendly staff; the service is just phenomenal and quick as well. There Boba or better known in OK as Bubble teas are so delicious, they can be made vegan. You HAVE to try this little hole in the wall restaurant. First things first, Shawn is the owner and he makes all of the food. This is some of the best quality sushi I have ever had. The prices are very comparable (some rolls even cheaper) and he is quick. I have eaten here more times than I can count. My two favorite rolls are the SA salmon (get spicy mayo to dip it in) and the Tempura shrimp add cream cheese (because why not?). They have lots of variety for fresh and cooked rolls and I truly enjoy the experience when I go. They are not usually very busy, but Shawn's has been open for at least 10 years now so you know they're doing something right. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. read more

I really, REALLY wanted some sushi today. Normally, I would just ignore my craving for raw fish, because there really aren't that many options within a 10 minute drive from home/work, but I was going to be in the area anyways. Well, I spent way too long looking for the place. They are tucked away in a small strip of businesses. Neither their sign above their door nor their sign next to the road are very visible. I circled around 3 times looking for them. I started to think they went out of business because I tried their phone number and it just beeped and cancelled out the call. The gyoza I ordered was yummy (though a tad cool); I felt rushed because they brought out my roll before I was even halfway through my appetizer. Finally, the main reason I'm marking the rating so low is because I had to ask how old the fish was. I know what fresh fish looks like. The color was off, and there were brown spots on the fish. He showed me the slab of meat he cut from and said that every fish is different and it's normal for it to have brown spots. That bad fish will smell bad. Nope... I've bought fish many times. Yes, it will start to smell, but you can also tell from color. Honestly, I didn't feel like fighting (I could sense I wouldn't win), so I just ate the rainbow roll that had semi-stiff shrimp, brown spotted tuna, brownish yellow tail, and brown spotted salmon. Another indication that the fish wasn't fresh - it didn't taste fresh. I won't be back until I see a change in their signage or hear something good from someone else. read more

I knew it was too good to be true. Great location, great prices, bad sushi. Keep in mind this was to-go at 2pm on a Tuesday... I ordered the chicken teriyaki rice bowl for my toddler. It was mostly onions, some peppers, very little chicken and hardly any teriyaki sauce. The chicken was so dry it was inedible. The rice was ok, but I trashed the rest. I got 4 rolls to try for myself: California, Philadelphia, spicy yellowtail and lifesaver. This may sound strange, but the Cali roll was coated in old/stale sesame seeds. That's what it tasted like. The rolls all fell apart, they were large. The philly had fresh salmon, not smoked, and was just not good. The spicy yellowtail the same, I like that it had good sized pieces of fish in it, but the flavor was really lacking. The Lifesaver...I thought it was pretty strange that this was on the menu considering its popularity at Neko. There is no comparison for Neko's lifesaver roll. They tried, but missed the mark. The tempura fried bacon tasted like toast. Toast inside sushi. It's just not right!!! I've wanted to try it for a long time. I tried it. I will not be going back. At least it was cheap so I didn't feel too badly about throwing more than half of my order away. read more

There are a few sushi places within 5 miles of where I live, and I've passed Shawn's over and over and over. Now, I'm a gal who loves her sushi, and reviewing is my jam. Sushi+something I haven't reviewed? Yes, please. I called in to order take-out since the boyfriend and I were hitting multiple places to feed everyone. The young lady who answered the phone was very nice and answered any question I had with efficiency and kindness. I ordered Pink rolls (6 for $6.95) and seaweed salad (OF COURSE). The inside was clean, so maybe it was an off day when a couple of others mentioned it not being so neat inside. Though, I'd have been disgruntled too if it was dirty when I went. It was quiet with only two patrons at the time. AN ASIDE: I think the girl of the pair was new to sushi. She was apprehensive and eating it with a fork. I kind of giggled. A fork?! Heee. Anyway. The same woman who took my order was working the register and politely retrieved my order and gave it to me. She was very nice and smiled the whole time. It's not always easy to smile when you're working, especially in service, so I appreciate that simple gesture. FOODZ: Seaweed salad 5/5: I haven't had a seaweed salad I didn't like, but it does seem like something difficult to mess up. Pink rolls 3/5: Tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, Japanese mayo, crab meat, and masago. It tasted fine, nothing amazing or mind BLASTING. But it was incredibly flimsy. I picked it up and it would collapse almost each time, or parts would fall out. I judge sushi heavily on integrity, and that's not a good sign. I understand that it has quite a lot inside of it, but I've had similar sushi that was nice and tight. All that being said, I can see myself coming here once in a while. read more

The sad thing about this review is... this was my favorite sushi restaurant in all of Oklahoma City. It was reasonably priced and the sushi was always excellent and fresh f I do not know what has happened to this place. The owner no longer has a smile on his face and the sushi is worse than prepackaged grocery store sushi, on sale. I got three rolls and some soup. The total price with tip was almost $50. The nori tasted rotten. I really hate to give this restaurant a bad review but it has gone downhill... Like Everest downhill. The wasabi and ginger are not fresh like they used to be. None of the fish tastes like the quality from 2 years ago. This is the second time I've had a bad experience in a year. I guess I will be forced to go to higher end sushi restaurants now. read more

When we came in there was only 2 people in the whole place. I was a little apprehensive because I have a rule... if no one is in the restaurant then don't go there. Also, to be quite honest .. "Shawn's Sushi" didn't have a authentic ring to it. Still, I like to try things so what the heck .. we only live once. We ordered the Volcano roll $13, Cajun roll $6.50, fire mountain roll, baked Cajun roll $7, spider roll $6.50. We ordered the green milk tea bubble tea ($3). The sushi wasn't OMG good but it's what I call decent.. aka: Good enough sushi! Would I go again... not on purpose but I'm not opposed to it if someone told me to have lunch with them there. I would like to start out by saying I've been here before, yet this feels like a completely different sushi place now. The seating is better, the service is better, and it seems like the menu was better too. I got the Spicy Cowboy and was more than impressed with it. I tried their house salad which was also impressive. Their house ginger dressing was really good. The salad was also big enough to share. My only complaint was that their edamame was less salty than I like it to be. I'm an American, after all. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

I am incredibly new to sushi. Shall we say, my knowledge comes from suburbia moms on YouTube tearing restaurants down or shining a golden light on them. I have a love/hate relationship with rice so I waited to jump in with anything franchise. Instead I follow our Yelp community lead Julie and see what she recommends. Sometimes to the point I have my phone with yelp reviews up and talking to the waiter. I tried the tempura roll and the lifesaver roll. Who can go wrong with deep fried or bacon? I also tried a roll that was vegetarian but the name escapes me right now. I will say the lifesaver was rolled wonky. It wasn't falling apart but the rice was uneven around the filling. I also should not have used wasabi with the lifesaver, it just didnt flow well. The tempura roll was fantastic and I had no qualms. Great meld of flavor and a good beginner roll. I wanted to order a seaweed salad but I didn't do much research and assumed it was a nori reincarnation. That was squashed after I ordered and saw Rachel's picture and immediately regretted not ordering it. I also saw that the decor used to be less than uplifting or Japanese enthusiastic ( if that is indeed a thing? Sushi seems ethnic and like the space should emulate some of that feeling.) in the space once occupied by Subway. However I still feel the dining room lacks authenticity. I want red hues to bring in the red sun from the Japanese flag. I want live plants! Apparently I want to be their interior designer. I just need more to give a warm atmosphere and make Shawn's more inviting. Don't quote me but, as a newbie I love the food well and good but don't forget aesthetics. read more

Well, Nobu it ain't. We almost didn't even stay: it was lit up like a Subway and every available table needed to be bussed or cleaned. A TV blared a kids' Christmas special, while one waitress and two sushi/kitchen people toiled away. But the Now Hiring sign in the window and glowing reviews coaxed us to cut a little slack and sit down. Shawn may wish we had kept looking. This is the kind of place I want to go all Gordon Ramsay on, or the Julie P version of GR. Here's the deal: the food is good. The Captain Crunch roll was as good as any we've had in the city, and the mermaid roll and the tempura roll were also very good. The miso was clearly made in house same day and was wonderful. But that's where the praise stops. Maybe if you just got take out, that's all you'd need to know. But atmosphere is important to me. Our dishes were spotted, or worse, caked with dried miso. The bottom of my miso saucer was visibly dirty. The service stressed us out because we felt her stress. Dirty tables all around us, bright lights, loud TVs, and receipt paper from the day's take spilling down onto the floor. I don't even mind the strip mall locale. One of my favorite sushi places in LA was in a strip mall in Studio City. But once you're inside a sushi place, you need to feel good about it. Because sushi at a strip mall in Oklahoma sounds oxy-moronic enough, you need to instill some confidence in the cleanliness and freshness of the food. Let's go top to bottom on this deal, from someone who started her restaurant life at a small sushi bar in Norman Oklahoma. You can either go luxurious (Neko), which is often cost-prohibitive, or spartan (Tokyo ala Ozu), but you can't go Subway on a sushi store. Here's my unsolicited advice to Shawn, who makes excellent sushi but needs an image overhaul. I don't mean this to be condescending. I know it's hard to open a restaurant. I know it's hard to find time and money. But this is worth the extra effort because the food is good and it fills a sushi sized void in this part of OKC. So here goes: -Get rid of the fluorescent lights. You've hung some cool pendant lights, can you make that work for dining room lighting? -Hang some drapes to drown on the din of Northwest Expressway and parking lot lights. Some could be light and noise blockers and some decorative. -Get some new plates. We ate our sushi off saucers. The molded plastic ones are perfectly fine, but a sushi place needs like a 25 rectangle plates per four top. -Kill your TV and lose the boom box. A small stereo would look better and could play some quiet music. Even a good ipod doc would be better than this. -The bathroom was gross. No toilet paper, a dirty sink, etc. Does not instill confidence. -Set up a protocol for each table. The waitress seemed so stressed. Probably because at every turn we were asking for something. Can we have napkins? Can we have plates? Can we have soy sauce? That's stressful, but also unnecessary. If the tables had been properly bussed and set back up, they would have plates, soy dishes, a napkin with chopsticks and both kinds of soy. That way, if someone needed to ask for a fork or a straw, the server wouldn't be so frustrated. That's just round one. Round two, I'd encourage black cloth napkins with chopsticks inside, little bonsai trees, real tea pitchers with real green tea instead of tea bags. Linen service for the cloth napkins would solve the clean apron problem. I say this with love. We loved the sushi. I want this to do well. I don't think any of this is much more than cosmetic, but I think it would add so much if customers were able to really get comfortable and relax. read more

Had the teriyaki chicken lunch special, mostly celery with very little chicken and hardy any teriyaki flavor. Came with big ball of white rice on side and a 2 pot sticker. Not a big fan of celery so I must give this lunch special two thumbs down. Also order a few rolls of sushi (spicy cowboy and California rolls), yes this is not Nobu but you're not paying Nobu prices either. We live near by and this has become our regular sushi place. Work late = Shawn's. First the sushi is great! thick cuts quickly prepared and great prices. Shawn's a great guy too. When he's not busy making sushi he'll stop by and say hello. That's were it ends. The restaurant itself needs to be updated to have more of a Japanese restaurant feel. There also needs to a much better beer selection. Bud, Corana, etc doesn't cut it. The wait staff needs some help too. One girl doesn't like sushi, she's stated she's never tried it so how would she know? The other girl is pretty cool and does a great job. All that said, it's all about the sushi which is wonderful! We ate here via a friend referral who talked about it like it was "OUT OF THIS WORLD!" Well, that phrase can be misconstrued in a variety of ways. We were happy to sit down at a small business to help promote and support, because we believe in the small-business enterprise. 1st off: The Food! The food was without question, amazing! The sushi was beyond quality and Shawn certainly knows what he is doing, and I'm glad he branched out on his own. That was the Sushi, though. The edemame was something that I might as well have purchased frozen from the grocery store and heated myself. It came out dry without kosher salt. The waitress had 2 other tables that had already eaten and she was in a frantic the whole time like the place was packed or something. 2nd: The Service! I don't wish to hurt the feelings of others in my noble attempt at honesty, but the young lady working that evening was, well, I guess to learn something new you have to start somewhere, right?! She apologized over and over again saying that it was her "first day." Eeeeesh! Customer Service 101 says DON'T EVER SAY IT'S YOUR FIRST DAY!!! Otherwise, you lose instant credibility. So, as the night went on and she kept discrediting herself, poor thing, she left our sushi sitting on the counter for 10 minutes. I know this because we all kept looking over wondering if it was ours. By this point she only had 1 other table that had just been seated. We had to practically beg for everything, no silverware, asked for napkins 3 times, no refills, no ramakins for our soy sauce, etc. The food is the reason they didn't get a 2-Star, and she's the reason they didn't quite get to a 4-Star. We saw him drop one of our dumplings and he looked up to see if we saw and we did so he put more in the toaster oven (that has obviously caught fire before and probably shouldn't be used). Took the family for lunch here Saturday. The gyoza was very good and the sushi was great! Our waitress was attentive and friendly and never let us go unnoticed. We had a California roll, a Baja California roll, Cajun roll, spicy tuna roll, and a Rainbow roll. All were spectacular and we only spent $70...with tip! This little pace is big on taste and value. I stopped in and ordered 5 rolls to go, as well as a beer. The food was finished as I finished the beer and was superb. I highly recommend.
