At the H&I center for the owl and hawks program
    Jessica T.

I have been coming to Shawnee since I was a kid when my family would go 'family camping' and we always loved the lake, hiking, and bicycle trails throughout the park. It had been a few years since I'd been to Shawnee so my boyfriend and I decided to check it out last year with our two dogs for 4th of July weekend and we had a blast. This year we stayed over Labor Day weekend in Loop C in a non-electric spot and it was very nice, the bathrooms were very clean and the spot was level for our tents. One of the evenings we went to the H&I center for the Owl & Hawk Program which was so great. The ranger that gave the presentation used to be a teacher and you could feel the passion he has for the park amd nature. I would recommend going to one of the programs if you are staying at the park. One lesson learned was where to get firewood... our first two days we were using the firewood vending machine or Coach Ed's which is right outside of the park and we burned it so quickly. We then found out about the guy that lives on Pitt Street that had a better deal on firewood so we went there and were very pleased. Directions: turn right out of the exit of Shawnee onto Market Street and continue until you hit Route 30. Make a right at the First National Bank and go about 4 miles and you'll see a little sign that says Firewood and it is the honor system and they accept cash for payment.

This is a large, well shaded, some what private feeling campground. For example, Campsite 32 is level, near bathrooms, and had a trail entrance nearby. Only drawback is that it is wedged between the PA Turnpike and Rt. 30 (which makes its accessible, but not very quiet).

Very nice Pennsylvania State Park camping facilities. Grass is cut, bathrooms are clean and modern. Offers campsites with full hook ups and in a pet allowed area. My dog loved it here. Spacious campsites that offer some privacy from your neighbors and being a state park quiet hours are from 9pm - 8 am.

We found all the staff at Eagle's Nest to be very pleasant, friendly and accommodating. We had about 15 rigs, and rented one cabin. Paul placed us in sites very near each other, and close to the pavilion which perfectly met our needs for the event. The pavilion near the creek, with electricity, lighting, a nearby restroom, and running water, was a great set-up for our group meetings and meals. Paul even set up a fire ring near the pavilion for our evening campfire and music. The camp facilities were very clean and level, with full services at each site. The restaurant on site (Fireside Inn) has an extensive menu. Try the cauliflower soup ... it is FABULOUS. Eagles Nest is conveniently located near Cumberland, MD - a great local tourism spot with museums, shops, restaurants, and a scenic railroad ride. The campground is still a work in progress and we look forward to going back to see how it is coming along. Paul has a great vision for further improvements and is working hard toward that end. With a mix of seasonal and transient residents, most in self-contained units, there is little need for public facilities. Some in our group might have preferred a public bathhouse (in future development plan), but the lack of a public bathhouse would not prevent our return. Happy trails ...

Photo Credits: Photography by 3Spade7Star…read more Five River Campgrounds exceeded my highest expectations and had the most friendly, kindest, and most wonderful staff & owners. The campground is famous for its sold out annual Bluegrass festival yet it is gaining attention for its powwow events. It was very easy to find the campground. We went to the Five River Campgrounds for the Third Annual Powwow in Parsons in June 2025. It was the most meaningful pow wow I ever experienced. The owners of the campground (Joyce & John) gave the sales of the tickets to the powwow to the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) Memorial Grove. The non profit organization is involved in promoting awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Some of the performers gave their earnings to MMIW Memorial Grove as well. The Five Rivers Campgrounds owners welcomed us with open arms and immediately noticed us as photographers. We do a lot of philanthropic work in photography yet we rarely get noticed or thanked by many people for it. The owners of the campground were selling tee shirts and stickers with our photography. We had given permission to have our photography used to the performer we have taken the photo of and we were happy to see that he & the owners of the campground were displaying our photography on tee shirts and stickers in the campground shop. The campgrounds are beautiful with views of the mountain. Immediately staff helped us park and alerted us of the speed limit on the campgrounds. The powwow was held outdoors and there was an open air arena with a roof to provide shade. The stage in the venue had a shelter and a good view. You had to provide your own seating, yet we knew that beforehand. The fee for the pow wow was $10 for two days, and we captured the most memorable and beautiful photos we ever took on those days of performers in regalia against green foliage and the mountains. The powwow was small yet the amazing camaraderie and performers were unforgettable. This was one of the finest powwow venues in ambiance, performance, connections, and professionalism we ever experienced.

Right in the heart is a most worthwhile stop, Ohiopyle Falls, a twenty-foot waterfall that spans the wide Youghiogheny River over a couple of dramatic levels. The parking lot was huge and pretty empty, and it was a quick stroll to the broad observation decks that jut out over the river. There was a group of kayakers huddled together as they were preparing to navigate the whitewater torrents. The hamlet of Ohiopyle provides a welcome coffee break. We explained that the State Park Ranger had assigned the site upon checkin and mentioned nothing about a "No Dog Zone". They indicated that since we were checking out the next morning we would have to move. The officers were very nice however them being so heavily armed was a bit unnerving!! In Pennsylvania state parks, dogs are generally not allowed in swimming areas, inside buildings, or in designated non-pet overnight areas like cabins and group tenting areas. They are also prohibited in any area specifically designated as closed to pets. Responsible pet ownership is expected, meaning dogs must be leashed, attended, and their waste must be cleaned up!!! After a seven hour multi state slough we finally arrived at Ohiopyle State Park in PA. Site 139 was an easy back in however due to an afternoon thunderstorm there's no power to the campground upon our arrival but thankfully it came back on a short while ago! We've decided to enjoy a second day exploring the river, local sites etc. Really enjoyed our stay. While the entry roads are a bit tight the facilities were clean plus the staff was amazingly friendly. Highly recommended.
