It's larger than it was first time I visited, but still in the little strip mall off Chain Lake Drive. There are two rooms either side of the entrance, both cool, subtly lit and cozy. It was just after they opened on a summer's Thursday morning, so I was the first customer and quickly ordered the meat thali. This comes in six segments. Two meat curries which change from time to time (today it was beef and chicken). A very nice dahl, a good portion of rice, chickpea salad and a quartered plain naan. All very tasty and overall quite a sizeable portion. I was on the ravenous side of peckish when I arrived and left thoroughly stuffed, so you definitely get your value for the $23 with tip. It's not licensed, but has a nice line in cold drinks should you so desire. It's no surprise this place is consistently voted No.1 curry house in Halifax, though it has a lot more competition than it did when it first opened. Thoroughly recommended.

So it's my first time ordering food here. They serve their pakoras with plum sauce? That's so weird…read moreand it does NOT go together. So maybe its a mistake? I hope it is. Anyway, the pakoras were ok. Butter chicken was very oily. Yes, oily, not butter oil, just oily. (Look at the picture). The best part of the meal is the rice. But even that's not good. It has a nice color to it though. Food is pretty mediocre. I'd come back for a quick takeout but i'd go to other places if I actually want a real, good indian food.

During my exile in Ottawa, the strip malls on the Bedford Highway across from local institution The…read moreEsquire (charmingly named Esquire Plaza 1 & 2) evolved into a hub of cuisines from around the world, and I'm here for it! I've checked a few of these places off my "To Eat At" list, and when looking for some easy takeout after a long day, I took the opportunity to strike another name through. Tanoor is an interesting mix of Syrian and Yemeni cuisine, reminding me of the many East Asian restaurants that put multiple countries' food on their menu to expand their business' appeal. Shawarma features prominently, with both chicken and beef, as well as different regional variations including the Canadian-ized version with more vegetables, and the more traditional version of just meat, garlic sauce and pickles. On the Yemeni side of the menu, one of the country's most famous dishes is the star - mandi. Traditionally, this would be prepared by cooking the meat above a pot of rice in a tandoor/tannur/tanoor, and since it forms the basis of Tanoor's name, I'm going to assume that's how they do it here as well. For our order, I went with a whole chicken mandi, which includes rice and zahawig hot sauce, and I tacked on an order of tabbouli to add some green to the meal. It was ready for pickup in quick order, just 15 minutes later. The mandi was an impressive sight as takeout, although I'm sure it's even better when plated for dine-in. A red-hued, spatchcocked chicken lay atop a huge mound of warmly-coloured rice, which had seen some saffron and other seasonings itself. The container is one of those large rectangular aluminum trays you see at pot lucks and the like, so this was a LOT of rice. After serving up the plates, we eagerly dug in. The chicken skin lost its crispness while wrapped for takeout, but it and the meat had a warm, earthy flavour profile not dissimilar from Indian tandoori chicken that we're more familiar with. The ultra-tender (and admittedly a bit overcooked) meat fell off the bones. The rice had its own complementary flavours from the saffron and the cardamom seeds that dotted the dish, while the tangy zahawig brought contrast and a hint of spiciness to our meal. I found Tanoor's tabbouli to be more lemon-forward than most that I've had, with a layer of sweetness to balance out the acidity of the lemon juice. Not a wild departure from a well-known dish, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I may not be out in the Bedford area very often, but Tanoor and many of its neighbours have added a lot to the area's food scene that would have been hard to imagine not that long ago.

NEW OBSESSION. This…read moreis located on the basement floor of spring garden place and I had no idea it existed until today. This place has a diverse menu beyond your typical butter chicken and rice (although they have those too). They have dosa, different chicken dishes every day and 2 vegetable curries as well.. they also have butter chicken poutine! I initially wanted to get a combo plate of chicken and veggie curries, the gentleman at the counter gave me a sample of the sauce on the chicken and it was awesome.. but I saw masala dosa on the menu and opted for that instead.. and then at the last minute decided to get the combo plate too. I also got an Indian bread pudding. The dosa was awesome. He added something spicy to it at my request and it was perfectly spiced and the outside crepe was so crispy, and the portion was HUGE, I had enough for supper, I ate about half. It came with what I think is a coconut chutney and I think daal. The chicken curry was AMAZING. It was just insanely flavorful and heavily seasoned but not spicy If that makes sense. The veggie curry was a Matar paneer and was a bit spicy but also super flavorful. The bread pudding was interesting as well, it had a cardamom cream sauce and nuts in it. Very sweet but very tasty. The service here is also great. They were super friendly despite being quite busy! I can't wait to come back and try some of the other dishes!

Pretty good! And inconsistent…read more My girlfriend and I went twice this week. First time I had the special Chili and Fries, which was good. The second time I got the grilled chicken wrap daily special (it comes with salad or pasta salad) from the woman at the cash (she seemed new). At least thats what I ordered, when I motioned to the wall with the specials on it (not the wall with the normal menu). Later I received the wrap and no salad. When I inquired, he argued I only ordered the wrap and not the salad. I tried to explain, he seemed more interested in catching me in a lie like I was looking for free stuff. Eventually he asked if I wanted the salad and I could just pay extra for it. I declined and returned to my meal. There were two LARGE bones in my chicken. My girlfriend got the keto Chrispy Cheddar sandwich both times. The first time she loved it. The second time not as much. It was cooked by someone different each time. The first cook knew how to bake the cheese so it was actually crispy and solid. The second cook must not have known how to do this, and it was just wet cheese coating the rest of the sandwich. We'll probably go back if we're in the area, as there arent a wealth of keto options out there. But I was disappointed with the return trip.

I assumed it was because they were just opening and this was a sales pitch. He went to get me some chicken shwwarma but I declined, citing my vegetarianism. So he gave me a sample of something that I realize now I can't remember but it was good. Real good. So he whipped me up a plate. A big plate. A plate that far outstripped my appetite but it all looked very good. Throw in a drink and the bill came to about $12. Which, considering I'd been thinking a pizza slice was going to be my lunch, was more than I wanted to spend. But, I figured, I should be more adventurous. And the food was good. Very good. So good I kept eating long after the point of being full and I still had tons of food left. So, for food court fare, it's a bit more expensive than I might like to pay. But it's also better than most food court fare in terms of taste and health. You'll have to weight the pros and cons for yourself.
