That's how I ended up at Dapper Gents, at the beginning of its second week of beard trims following Covid-19 restrictions. Those who have seen my old "Suburbanite in STL" list may remember how important parking and approach are to me. If you have similar concerns, then you may like to know that street parking is not too difficult. In the canyon of Washington Avenue, my "ParkLouie" app was rather slow, so I fed my charge card into the parking meter, no problem. And, if you're looking for the correct entry to Dapper Gents among the multiple doors of 1000 Washington, you go toward the entry "east" and middle of the block, not the one near the cigar place "west" at the corner of 11th St. Michael A. did a great job! Friendly, attentive to direction, fade cut (and beard trim) in the top tier of all cuts ever. Covid-19 concerns? All staff and clients wore masks, mine removed only for the beard trim. I booked and paid $90 specifically for a curly haircut after explaining that I wanted more curl definition, styling guidance, and a cut tailored to my natural curls. Instead, the service felt more like a standard haircut than a specialized curly service, and I left unhappy with both the styling and overall result. Anna was very sweet and did try to correct the styling when she realized I was unhappy, which I appreciated, but ultimately the experience did not feel like the specialized curly service I had booked and paid for. UPDATE: The owner reached out after my experience and offered me a complimentary appointment with another curly hair specialist. I decided to give the salon another chance, and I'm very glad I did. My second experience was completely different. I was extremely happy with my hair and, just as importantly, I left feeling educated about my curls and confident that I could recreate the results at home. My stylist took the time to explain the techniques and products that worked best for my hair, which was exactly what I had hoped for from the beginning. I really appreciate the owner listening to my concerns and making an effort to make things right. While my first experience was disappointing, I'm very happy with how the salon handled the situation and with the service I received the second time around. He apologized and promised it wouldn't happen again, or that he'd let me know if he was running behind. This time, neither happened - I arrived for my 2:30, saw he was behind again with no heads-up, and left. He then charged the full $80 no-show fee, and when I said I'd dispute it, he argued I had the appointment time wrong rather than acknowledge the repeated wait or the promise he'd made. The haircut itself is fine. The time management and the way he handles a legitimate complaint are not worth $80.
