The bulk of the collection was assembled by two London-based art dealers on a commission from the King of Poland, but the King's abdication in 1795 and their failure to find another buyer resulted in this astonishing collection of Old Masters being bequeathed to Dulwich College instead. Visitors can now enjoy an astonishing collection of Old Masters from the 17th and 18th Centuries set in the perfection of Soane's gallery: his deceptively sophisticated yet simple design became the model for galleries around the world since. Curation is simple and clear, and audio guides are also available. It's worth a couple of hours of anyone's time and has an excellent cafe and a small shop. The nearest railway station is West Dulwich: it's a 10 minute walk through Belair Park and along Gallery Road.

In the front is a space that is used for shows by alumni of the college and the college itself is contained to three buildings joined by corridors and bridges. It's a nice place to be and work, although the current SU bar is just a bar at the back of the canteen, there's nothing to really distinguish it as a bar. No nights or music goes on here as of yet, but there may well be in the future once the bar facilities are sorted out.

Now in its sixteenth year, this is the largest artists' fair in the UK, and features over 150 artists from the UK and overseas, selling paintings, photographs, sculptures and prints directly to the public (ie with no commission - saving up to 40%). I went there a few years ago with my partner's cousin, who was exhibiting her photography there. The venue is part of the Old Town Hall complex, and is about ten minutes' walk from Clapham Junction station. It is a little pricey to get in, but the range and quantity of art on display is impressive. Not every stall will take your fancy though - some of it is very mainstream, others very eclectic, so it depends on your taste. As well as straightforward art, there are artists who specialise in painting things like your pet's portrait, if you are so moved. But there's bound to be something that takes your fancy. Unfortunately for me, I seem to be born with expensive tastes: rather than the stuff around £40, I seem drawn like a bee to a honey pot to the stuff in the £4,000 bracket. I don't know if this means I have good taste, or just an eye for the commercially popular. My other half and I eventually bought a photographic print for around £90. Refreshments are available, and there's a jazz band playing during the Friday evening reception.

Since then, and since attending Dr Sketchy's wonderful life drawing classes at the RVT, I have been back a few times to browse and a few times to buy art supplies. This is not a bad thing, but knowing it's so close really tempts me to keep going back and spending far too much money on lovely paints and pens and brushes and stuff, even though I can't draw to save my life. There always seems to be a few good deals available on certain items, though not to the extent of the sales Cass Art runs all the time, and some of the staff are really helpful. There was one grumpy man there once who referred me to his colleague rather than answer my question himself, then glowered at me as he scanned everything in at the till, but everyone else I've spoken to have been pretty nice and didn't make me feel stupid when I asked basic questions about materials.
