I had to fit my visit into the shop's limited and somewhat odd operating hours, but fit it into my schedule, I did. And I'm sure glad I did as well. The shop is nothing special from the outside, and it's nothing particularly special from the inside. The walls are cubby holes dedicated to the seemingly haphazard storage of knitting wool/yarn. It's par for the course of any knitting/crocheting store, really. But the jewel of this place is its business owner, retired Mrs M.A. Jones. She self-professedly runs a wool shop to keep herself out of trouble. Love. Her. She is potentially the most helpful person I've met in my life. She's eager to hear about your project and to give you ideas on what yarns will be best for it. She doesn't try to upsell you, and she will recommend an acrylic wool if that's what will suit your project the most. I went in one day and bought a skein of wool. I went in the next day to buy some more, but mostly to show off what I'd done with the first skein, so eager I was for her encouragement and praise. She stocks both high-end and economical wools, so if you're cheap like me you won't have to suppress your balking at the dear wools that come with dear prices. 100 grams of a 70/30 acrylic-alpaca for £2.99 suits me just fine.

As we know, indie shops can be hit or miss, since they tend to fit the owner's tastes...but I have to say, this shop had me wanting to buy ALL THE THINGS and start up many new crafts. (Restrained myself, as I had limited luggage space and Parisian craft shops on the itinerary.) Yarn and apparel fabrics were the main attractions for me--I picked up some cotton that later became a skirt, and a couple balls of bulky British yarn that are now keeping a friend's head warm in Toronto. I also added notions, markers, iron-ons, and paper goods to my craft arsenal. (I don't normally do paper stuff but how could I not buy giant cross-stitch paper??) I was super impressed by the machine parts collection--who knew that many feet existed?! I probably walked the whole store 3x to make sure I wasn't missing anything I couldn't live without. Anyway, amazing stock aside, the owner is incredibly sweet & kind. We had a nice little chat about the shop, and she graciously shared some business tips. Since that visit, I've been following her Instagram and *really* wish I had managed to take a class when I was in town. (Now I know for next time!!) The shop is bright, cheery, inviting, and beautifully pulled together. If you're in London and you or someone you love is a crafter, swing by this store. You're bound to find something(s) wonderful.

I came in with a friend who was inquiring about a certain pattern, and the girl working was extremely friendly and as helpful as could be - even though her advice meant we didn't end up needing to buy anything... Perhaps what makes this store especially unique is their fantastical window displays, made entirely of, you guessed it - yarn. Apparently there's a whole slew of "knitting artists" out there... and many of them are on the monthly docket of this shop to deck out the window in whimsical and unbelievably architectural cascades of yarn. Last month it was a (large!) knitted sink and toilet... this month its a wooly version of a snowman. The shop offers classes... now, I'm not exactly one to bother knitting a scarf... but a truly ambitious and artistic construction of woven fiber is a slightly different and more enticing story... for £40 I can join one of their classes for "knitters and crocheters who have visions!" Hmmm....

As a keen crafter who grew up in jumpers hand knitted and handed down by me ma I don't think it's anything special. Went in to check it out and the attendant was pretending she didn't notice us (2 people) this is hard to believe as you can almost see a red stripe round the walls where someone tried to swing a cat. When the attendant finally acknowledged us with a face like someone had dropped a stitch we had just about seen all of the meagre ammount of items on sale. I think they do 'knitting circles' in there too. In such a small space it would be the ideal way to pass on knits. Get yourself up the Roman Road nearby for bargain haberdashery and a fairly good sewing shop with a lovely chap who repairs machines.

The boa in question was red and black and it cost 10.00 pounds.I also saw hair clips, originally from River Island for 2.99. I do not know what this has to do with fabric. I guess it's because they had these sequin decals and a sequin pins. It's an accessory part of the shop. The staff in this shop are nice enough but I thought 10 pounds for just some feathers was a bit expensive. Oh well.

Creative Quilting is the place to go if you are into quilting. I am not - I have never done a days…read morequilting in my life, but if I were to, it would be here. They also cater for people like me too - a 'Patchwork Virgin' (that is what they call the people on the introduction course). There are plenty of courses on offer here, including making your first quilt. The courses run all year and are inexpensive. There is also a large section here of childrens fabrics, for cots and blankets. The fabrics are absolutely adorable, when I last came here I spied a fabric of my favourite childrens book - The Hungry Caterpiller. If I were five again I would have loved this as a bedspread. The fabrics range in price, if some are a bit expensive then there is a Bargain Corner - of discounted lines and off cuts. This place needn't just be for old dears!

I was sent on a mission to get some cotton thread, luckily I stumbled across this place. I was greeted by a nice lady who apologised straight away for the messy state of the shop, something I was oblivious to as I thought everything looked in order. There is definitely a charm that this shop possesses. There is an interesting mix of products but I guess it is all fabric related, hence the name. There is also a gallery space that you can hire out for solo or group art shows. Anyway, my trip to Fabrications was a success as I found the exact colours I was sent to get. Out of all the places I went to that sell fabric, thread, wool etc. I found this to be the best, and by far the most delightful. I guess that's Broadway Market for you.

Everything is well priced, and you'll find any kind of gift for just about any kind of person. I had my eye on a knitted giraffe last time I popped in to say hi. The hanemade items are gorgeous, and I'm sure if I was more crafty, I'd give this place five stars. It's a great little venue, on a lovely, somewhat undiscovered street. Come here quick before Broadway Market gets as trendy as Columbia Road. It's fab.

The London Bead Company's humble little shop front belies a colossal inventory that lies beyond. I can't imagine needing to go anywhere else when you have practically every type of Italian, Czech, silver and seed bead in the world on it's books. Never mind the whole section of the shop devoted solely to Swarovski crystals. The real clincher though, is that this place is also a haven for the keen sewer and embroiderer alike; step into the tardis-like back room and there are several hundred varieties of ribbons, silks, buttons, fabrics, yarns and more. A one stop shop for the crafter if ever I've seen one.

There are a few fabric shops on Berwick street so shop around for the fabric you want at the price you want. I've never bought fabric from a shop before, i've always gone to the market, and this place was a bit pricey at £3/m for undyed cotton. The place is an Aladdin's cave of fabric and the staff were helpful and asked what weight fabric i wanted. I hadn't a clue but they had some good advice for me. They even climbed over mountains of other fabric to get me the cloth i wanted. I'm going to keep shopping around for somewhere cheaper, but will go back if i'm in the area.

To be honest, most of the fabric stores on Berwick St. have grouchy and sullen employees, but this place is the worst. I have shopped at the fabric shops on Berwick Street since 2013 and the rotten attitude of the staff at this store (in my experience) has been consistent. It has not mattered who has worked there, that's the funny part, I am not even speaking about one person. Everyone I have ever encountered there is rude. About two years ago I mentioned how unpleasant the staff were to another salesperson at MacCulloch & Wallis and he told me that he used to work there, agreed that the staff were unfriendly and in particular worked a woman who customers always complained about. The negative vibes this store gives off has discouraged me from shopping there for about a year or more. But today I thought I would go in, because it does have a great selection. However, once again the Berwick Street Cloth Shop vibe was moody. Therefore I have finally decided to write this negative review because of my final horrible experience. I was looking at fabric bent down while a sales person was busy organizing the rolls of cloth across from me. She accidentally hit me in the face with the end of the fabric roll. I stammered "oh sorry" and as she turned around to glare at me, she aloofly said "what, did I hit you?" to which I replied "yes". She then very (surprise!) rudely responded "sorry". So I said "I am sorry I guess I am in the way" to which she said "no it's fine". LIKE OBVIOUSLY IT'S FINE I AM A CUSTOMER. It's absolutely okay to accidentally bump into someone or hit them in the face, but to do so and not react until the person who has been hit says sorry to which you then glare back is too much. Literally comical. There are so many shops on Berwick Street, for price and value go to my favorite shop there The Cloth Shop. The selection is varied and the staff are much much much more friendly. Fabric shops should be enjoyable to enter and explore. No one should feel intimidated to go and ask for help or buy stuff. Lastly I feel bad for anyone who works there that is nice, because I have not met you and this review is focused on everyone being glum. But in my experience I have only ever encountered mean spirited people. Two stars, one for beautiful goods and the other for the one nice employee who maybe exists there.
