In the week I was visiting, I saw the staff wipe down with polish the lockers, sweeping and mopping the floors, wiping down all equipment, taking out trash, refilling the cleaning wipes, and cleaning the bathrooms. There are two main areas, the weights and cardio machines on one side. There is also a stretching area in the middle and then the powerlifters and crossfit style area on the other side. I went to a class "12 days of Christmas" and it kicked my butt. The instructor was awesome and the class was packed. There are two large fitness rooms upstairs for classes such as spinning and even kickboxing. The ladies locker room is impeccable. I even used their showers one day. They even have a dressing room. Highly recommend! This will be our go to gym when visiting the area.

I switched to Retro from BZ, having also attended Gold's, LA Fitness, and a few smaller gyms in Berks County in the past (including the colleges' fitness spots). The facility is better all around: it's cleaner, more up-to-date, has better ventilation, better equipment, and better showers/locker rooms. If I'm being picky, the only changes I would make would be to add an additional mirror in the Group X room and raise the placement of toilet paper dispensers in the bathrooms (they're very low if you're tall). But really, that's all I've got by way of constructive criticism! Staff is friendly and they remember your name. (And if you're reading this, Retro staff: Claire is a pseudonym.) To be particular: Janet is an awesome group fitness director and the classes reflect that. I also love that I can sign up for classes online: it guarantees me a spot in class and helps me feel that I cannot skip the gym because I treat it like a scheduled appointment not to be missed. Retro also has a smoothie bar, tanning, and better hours than most of the other gyms in the area. Biggest plus: Retro is far more affordable than just about any other facility. I had a pleasant enough massage, and later had an appointment through Groupon for my 13 year old. He complains constantly about how much the gym costs to run, how he was forced to paint etc. One huge issue is that the gym is hot, very, very hot and extremely humid. He refuses to do anything about it and says 72 degrees is the ideal temperature to work out. The thermostat is set to 68, but it definitely feels more like 78 due to the humidity. It's only going to get worse as the temp outside gets hotter. He needs to be open to hearing the opinion of members.

When I called back and explained that I had just been on the line, I was told there was "no reason to be unkind," even though I was simply explaining what had happened and repeating my request. When I asked how to cancel my HOTWORX membership, I was told it had to be done online or in person, but no instructions or link were provided when I asked where to go online. Questions about when management would be available also weren't clearly answered. After being a paying member for over a year and a half, the front desk interaction felt cold, rude, and dismissive. Because of the customer service alone, I cancelled my membership and will not reconsider returning. I have also reached out to management directly regarding this experience. Unfortunately, based on how this situation was handled, I would not recommend this HOTWORX location.
