When the studio was closed and no one was there to open I dialed the number for Shara studio and Shara , herself, answered. The Best: Anytime I am in NYC and need my makeup done, I reach out to Shara. She has a team of truly talented makeup artists, (Jennifer, Frances and Maggie are super talented and full of knowledge you can apply to your daily makeup routine). I don't wear a lot of makeup but whether I have an event or just a dinner party, (bold/heavy or light makeup) my makeup looks natural. Not typically a complainer, but even when I ask for a tweak, they gracefully fix and its never a problem (like some places). I love her makeup line. I found the Shara Makeup Studio through a GroupOn deal, which I purchased for a 60 minute make up lesson. My appointment was actually with Jennifer, not Shara, though any fears I had about not meeting with Shara were quickly put to rest the moment I met Jennifer. She was kind, patient and really helpful in instructing me as a novice makeup user. I've been able to continue doing my makeup at home following her instructions (they give you a very handy page of notes to take home), and I love the products I purchased from them. You are NOT required to purchase any of their products, but for me, seeing the results, I wanted to try and replicate everything as best as I could so I did buy a bunch of their stuff (though Jennifer also confirmed a few items I had already and brought with me were perfectly suitable). It gets a little more expensive of course if you go that route but for me, it was like making up for a dozen years of not buying any makeup -- I got everything I needed at this one appointment, and should be well set up for a while! All in all, I'm really happy with the results and what I've learned. I just had to write this review of Maggie Esmond for private makeup lesson. She is super professional and picked the right shade for my skin tone. She knew exactly what foundation to use for my oily face, what eye shadow will pop my eye and she picked the right lipstick to give me a glam look. I was so satisfied with her make up that I have returned couple of times for additional sessions. She also gave me helpful tips for everyday look, apparently I was doing it all wrong. i'm not sure why her yelp account is listed under "mkbs" and there's no photo or any detai on it- but she has glowing review on googlepages,city search that's kind of a little shady isn't it? anyway, i got an appointment with her for makeup lesson from lifebooker- overall eventhough, the rate is cheap! but i won't be using her again- ok so i brought with me products that i used fresh face rose primer and nars blush and instead of incorperate what i had in the makeup lesson she decided to just applied makeup using her own products which she will ask if you want to buy those later.. i don't like to overall results it cames out to dark- she used brown-ish lip color which i don't think look good on me- and she basically cake my face with ton and ton of products. well, im not gonna do that everyday so what give? i mean, i want a makeup lesson that i can do it everyday not just one time deal.. anyway,i end up purchased some products which look cheap but cost 15-25$ and more total is almost 300 worth of products and several days later i broke out horribly from the foundation she sold to me. i don't want to bother calling her since she seems like she couldn't care less actually. read more

This is a great gem of a makeup studio! I was able to get a Groupon for an 1-1/2 hour session, and learned a great deal about how to apply my own makeup properly. Bring all of the items you currently use, as the makeup artists will mix and match with their colors. The artist will apply the makeup to one side of your face, and then you apply it to the other with their guidance. Everything was written down, and I just need some home practice at this point. Brooke was my magician, and she worked wonders on me! I leaned how to do both a day and night look, which is what I wanted to learn. I also got tips on what to do when I didn't have a lot of time, but wanted to look at least presentable. Shara stopped in a few times during my transformation. I did buy some products, and they were all very reasonably priced, and easily augmented the things I already had. The bonus is that this studio is located at the ritzy Pierre Hotel on 5th Avenue, so I highly recommend strutting down the Upper East Side with your new gorgeous look after you are done with your session! In the past I had always gone to the makeup counters at department stores, and had a hodgepodge of items, some that worked, some that didn't. Ladies, save your money and just learn how to apply makeup so you look your best. I was very happy that I did this and may go back in a few months for additional pointers. I decided to buy the Groupon deal after reading the reviews on here. I would have to say that I completely agree with them. I arrived late because of train issues but I didn't feel like Danielle rushed or short cut me in any way. I got the 90 minute make up lesson so she walked me through the day look and night look. I was afraid that with the stuff she was piling on my face, that I would be sold the items which would quickly add up. Danielle was encouraging and answered questions along the way. I am glad that she didn't try to sell me on anything. I think because of that, I actually do want to buy some of the products, especially that liner pen! The only complaint I have is that the place is hard to find. Shara is in a salon and the salon is in a hotel. Plus, there is no cell reception down in the salon. When I arrived, there was no one at the reception area. After waiting a while, I wandered to where some of the people were and then they went to get Danielle in a discreet room by the reception area. Apparently Danielle did call me when I was late, but I didn't get the message until well after the appointment was over because I didn't have reception. If anyone would like to learn some good make up techniques, I would highly recommend Shara Makeup and Danielle. read more

My first time at Shara Studio was with Shara herself and both Shara and Amanda were amazing in every way possible. I had an appointment with Danielle this past Saturday. I'm having a destination wedding so I wanted to get the right look and learn to apply it myself, since it's a risk trying someone new right on wedding day. The makeup lesson was so much fun! Danielle is professional, warm and friendly, and really encouraging! Going in I felt kind of awkward because my makeup application skills are so rudimentary (and sometimes makeup people can be a little snobby?) but Danielle was the opposite and made me feel really comfortable and I was completely at ease. I felt pampered! My friends were wowed by the result and said I look "so beautiful, and just like you but heightened" which is exactly what I wanted. Not overdone, yet glamorous and elegant. We used my own blush and eyebrow pencil, and Shara products for the rest, which made sense to me because I was going for a wedding-day look and my own makeup products are for everyday in terms of color, etc. There was no pressure to buy anything. I came into her studio a bit frazzled from the day, told her I'm a new mommy and have left my beauty routine on auto-pilot for so many years now, and needed a fresh start. I was given a Groupon as a gift for the 1 hour makeup application lesson at Christmas in 2013. I finally went in to use it the other week and I cannot tell you how happy I am. First of all, I had a scheduling mix up when I first arranged to use it in December, but the ladies at Shara were fine with me postponing it until, eventually, February, even though it had technically expired in December - super sweet and accommodating. Second of all, I am not the best candidate for such an experience because I have terribly sensitive skin AND I am wary of people using foreign products on my face. So, poor Jennifer had an uphill battle with me. I was a bit of a unique customer as I ended up only doing the eye portion of the makeup while in the studio - but this was my choice due to my sensitivities to products. I couldn't handle starting from scratch and risking a reaction, even though Shara's products are oil free and seem to be geared toward any skin type. I explained my situation and Jennifer was super kind and not intimidating in the least, which is a huge plus for someone in my shoes. I am a tinted BB cream, mascara kind of makeup user, so this was a world of learning in just an hour. Jennifer went through the steps verbally, explaining when you would use a moisturizer and a primer and a foundation before applying the rest of your eye/cheek/lip makeup even though we didn't actually perform all the steps. We then decided to go with a light smokey eye look using some brown/bronze tones (I have fair skin and brown eyes and blond hair) and she did one eye while I followed and tried to replicate on the other. This was super helpful as any time I might have a question about the process, I was actually involved in it and the solution while seated in the chair. If I could follow the steps, then trust me, ANYONE can since I am such a novice. At the end of the session you receive a list of the products recommended, the brushes used for application and an overview of each step so that you can recreate your "look" when you are at home on your own. I ended up purchasing quite a few of the items we used in the session as I really enjoyed the look that Jennifer created for me. When I got home, I realized that one of the items I had wanted to purchase was in fact not in the bag (a different product was there in its stead) and after a quick email to Shara, she happily and promptly sent the proper product on the way. The women here were not only helpful, but very approachable, so I highly recommend coming here for a makeup lesson if you are looking to learn. Overall, I had a good experience. I learned how to apply blush and bronzer, as well as some great tips for eyeliner and eyeshadow, which I completely had given up on wearing. Having read the website, I brought the makeup I currently use with me, but was never asked if I had brought make up, so they just used their own line. In retrospect, I suppose I should have brought it up, but thought I might have misread the website. I think the powder foundation that I already owned matched my skin tone a lot better than the tinted primer they used. She was very patient when I kept changing my mind about which products I wanted to get and was not at all pushy about the products. I went for a 60 min make up lesson. It was a life changing experience. I learned so much and can not wait to go back to learn more. Shara is all smiles and so warm and personable. I'm pretty good at putting on my makeup so I wasn't sure how much I would 'learn' but Shara definitely taught me some techniques and gave my makeup routine a much needed re-boot. I usually wear Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, etc... but I really liked some of the products she used and bought some at the end. Shara is so laid back and there was absolutely no pressure to buy anything after the session. If you're on the fence I highly encourage you to treat yourself to a makeup lesson with Shara. The money I saved on the Groupon allowed me to buy some of the make up that Shara used during the lesson. It should be noted that Shara does not push you into buying any products, she simply lets you know what she is using and why. The decision to buy any products is left completely up to you. I got a private makeup lesson by Shara about 2 years ago and have been a fan of her makeup and what she taught me ever since. And after just getting my latest refill of makeup in the mail in a shiny and colorful padded shipping envelope, I felt the urge to make sure others know how great she and her products are. I didn't do a trial which was a bit of a risk but well worth it. I made the appointment the day before, online, making things super easy. These women are AMAZING!! From the very start, Shara has been a dream to work with. Our original appointment had to be rescheduled because of the impending Blizzard, but she was so accommodating, we were able to get in the following week. I was a bit nervous, as I don't spend a ton of time or money on makeup, and I got this as a Groupon. Walking into the Pierre hotel with my bag of mostly drugstore makeup, I thought "These ladies are going to laugh me right out of the chair". I worked with Amanda, who oohed and ahhed over my makeup, loving the colors I already own and getting excited just imagining the possibilities. The lesson itself was so helpful. They spent time talking about brush techniques, color choices, and ways to change my everyday look up a little. Each time she did something, she then handed the brush over to me and critiqued my application of the same thing on the other side of my face. And then she took the time to write down everything she did, from the color, whose makeup it was (mine or theirs), and the color name. It was simply awesome. It's not surprising that the girls used their own makeup products and gave me the option to buy them, they are businesswomen, after all. But they weren't pushy about it, and the pricing was reasonable. After the wonderful experience, I had no qualms about spending $100 on a brush, primer, foundation, mascara and eye color.
