I spent my after-prom party in The Shapla Tandoori when I was 16 years old. They let us drink alcohol because it is legal to serve accompanied with food. We had the night of our lives, the atmosphere was friendly, the décor a little tacky, but with charm and the music was traditional.
I came back here this week and apart from a few alterations in décor and menu; little else has changed.
The staff are still friendly and helpful, either when dining in or phoning for a take away.
The restaurant is quite small but this adds something of a personal touch, it also helps expedite orders because the turnovers are comfortably efficient.
The best thing about the Shapla is its food; it is the finest food I have tasted in years and the chef's obviously take pride in what they do. You will be hard pushed to find better Indian/Bengali restaurant in Shirley.
I had the Chicken Jalfrezi and the vegetables and meat were fresh and there was plenty of sauce to lap up my naan in. The desert was the sweetest I have ever tasted and I finished every last syrupy spot.
The restaurant is perfect for parties, intimate gatherings and special occasions. Make sure you book in advance as the restaurant is not large enough for walk ins. However if there are only a few of you, I'm sure you'll find a table. read more
