Fortunately, an old friend has settled there and he suggested we meet up for a reunion at Scannells Pub. And what a great suggestion it was. In addition to a hearty old school drinking establishment out front, in the back is a pleasant beer garden, quiet and away from the street. It looks like live music plays there in the summer time, but alas nothing on a weekday afternoon. In addition to local and national beers, the menu is an excellent combination of old and new school pub food. Fish and chips of course are there of course (which my son devoured), as well as steak fillet sandwiches. I opted for the West Cork burger, and my wife the Mediterranean plate. The menu does change periodically, but I am assuming that whatever they serve will have the same high quality. If you happen to be in West Cork, Scanners is definitely worth a stop.

Nothing fancy but the charm and craic of it is fantastic. They have impromptu performance's everyday and a quaint beer garden. The Murphys is fantastic - goodbye Guinness is what I say.
