The other issue was without a/c in the room, it was a bit hotter than I would have liked. Shouldn't have been a problem, but the windows have a lock to prevent opening very far, so couldn't get the cold night air into the room. Had a fan, which made it acceptable. Very clean bathroom. There is a coin only vending machine in the lobby, to get cold drinks. Would have liked ice making or a refrigerator in the room, as I couldn't get my drinks cold. Had pump dispenser of shampoo/soap in shower. No other tolietries provided. I liked the location as it was about a .7 mile walk to the city center, so it was nice and quiet, but not too far to get to restaurants, etc. We needed to go to a laundry and the closest we found was about a mile walk. The #5 bus from E. Cowes was 3.50 or so and dropped us off at the road for a 2 minute walk to the hotel. Our room #52 was on the quay side which was fairly quiet and pretty to look out on.

Epitome of a well-run budget motel: cheap, clean, convenient…read more Following standard advice, we arrived one day early from the departure date of our trans-Atlantic cruise, and needed a cheap place to stay for one night, that was close to the port and where we were arriving to (either the Southampton train or bus station). This motel seemed to fit the bill. Pros: -- Large comfortable king-size bed. it pretty much took up the entire room, but provided the one critical thing. -- Cost - since I don't have loyalty points with Ibis, I was OK booking through the Citi travel portal. It gives back 10% on hotel purchase, with the converted total for one night being $63.23 USD. -- Clean - the room is configured to make housekeeping simpler (which translates into cleaner rooms since less opportunity to miss something). -- Eating space - there is a large indoor area where you can bring your own food (and where people eat a continental breakfast) -- Seems safe. Room doors face inside, windows are secured and not openable. -- There were quite a few people working the front desk. -- walkable to restaurants (Mcdonalds and TGIF), grocery. Reminders; -- no additional amenities: no closet or drawer space at all. No place to store or heat up food. Toilet is isolated (door), but sink and shower is not. Really does mean living out of a suitcase. -- walls are really thin, so neighbor dependent -- one UK style outlet so make sure you have a universal plug -- parking is via a public, share lot that charges -- has air heating and air cooling, controlled by thermostat. No A/C, though not sure when you would need it. Strangely, there was an electric space heater in our room. The room is a square room, where plumbing fixtures (toilet, sink, shower) were added post. I do think the room size is bigger than the cabin room that we will be staying in, but not by much.

The accommodations are bare bones with two towels and a floor mat, bed, sink and toilet. The room is super tight with a vinyl floor and bare bones furnishings. The window opens a mere four inches to let in air. It. Was. Hot. the only saving grace is that this hotel is a ten minute walk to the horizon a cruise terminals you don't need a taxi. Would I stay here again - nope.

At the table behind us, neither diner was impressed and made quite a fuss, saying that he just wanted the beef (he wanted a steak actually) with none of this other stuff and certainly not liver Very difficult and already upfront ruins the evening when you can't find something that even seems appetising or to our taste...if we hadn't been staying there, my normal reaction would be to look at my partner, get the nod, and simply get up and leave and go somewhere else. You could say we should have known...but clearly, looking around the room, none of us did and we were all seemingly making an effort to find a reason to stay and eat Afterwards we ordered ice cream and a rum...both turned up in dish / glass, hot, straight from the dishwasher...not clever (or inexperienced staff?)...they were returned & replaced A final minor point - you would have thought that such a hotel could find a shoehorn (Ok I could have remembered to bring one, but I forgot)...apparently they used to provide them in the rooms but not anymore, and they didn't have a spare on hand Shame Let's see what The Pig at the South Downs can offer next time we want a local stay

But, and here's our main issue: The entire appearance of its web site and its other marketing materials tries to pretend that Goodwood Hotel is a charming estate. It features only photos of the Goodwood house estate, implicitly making people believe that that's the charming place (or at least in viewable distance) in which they'll stay. It seemed that any depiction of the reality (see our photo) of the not particularly unique hotel were deliberately avoided. This lack of charm unfortunately is part of the entire "experience", including for example a breakfast in the very functional health club (where most people are dressed in sports gear, or, as seen, even in bathrobe).

Room: clean and comfortable, had all the extras you need, and as the hotel is placed well away from any busy roads, it was quiet... The bathroom is showing signs of wear and tear, bits wobble, black mould around the bath, shower unit could do with a look at. Breakfast: I have stayed at a range of hotels and b&b's, but I can't remember that I have to sit where the table is allocated to a room number apart from when I was on a cruise ship, until my first breakfast dining experience at The Royal. What a Royal pain it was to try and sit near a window, first I got asked to move by the waiter with 'these tables are reserved', with no signs on the table saying at much, and when I later asked a waitress if I could sit on a window table, she looked at a clipboard and point to a table with ' they didn't come to diner last night'. The hotel wasn't even half full from the number of diners who came down during breakfast, and plenty of vacant window tables remained so during that time. Could this hotel do as others do, take a room number from the guest and allow the guest to sit where they want to sit, simple enough. Hotel Restaurant: We did have an evening meal booked for one of the nights but after the breakfast fiasco, we cancelled and went to other local restaurants. I'm sure the food would have been nice, but why sit somewhere that they see you as an inconvenience. Price: a little much for what it is.

I checked in and was given a complimentary pen, which was nice but I already have several. The same wonderful bellhop, Matthew, helped move my car. There was another man there. He was condescending and seemed to want to try to check in before I did. Although I sensed competition in him, so I ended up racing him to our separate rooms (I was in room 426 and he was in room 425). The room itself was cozy, and with a minor adjustment I was able to see the ocean. The bed was very very soft. I made sure of that. I also added my own personal touch to the room. The TV remote had a good signal (I made sure of that too) and when I picked up the phone I was greeted with a happy hello. I had trouble finding the bathroom to take a bath, but I quickly found the solution. There was a slight wait in the buffet hall, but that also moved quickly, with a little help from myself. The man in room 425 was also there, and challenged me to an eating competition (which I should tell you I won). There was oysters, and I ate several, but I feel they may have been a bit off. There was loud music at 12:05 am, but I very politely asked them to be quiet. In the end, five star stay! Will be back!

The bathroom was not clean. We were quoted 75 pounds per night yet VAT was added on. I went to use the phone on our last morning but found we were disconnected as out bill had already been finalised. We arrived on a sunday evening but no food was available. We would have moved out but the town was pretty full. Good breakfast though.

She also helped us figure out how to get to the cruise port the following morning. When we returned from dinner she was still there and there was live music which was great. We had a few more beers and listened until she was finished. The next morning we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. Besides the usual continental fare you can order a meal off the regular menu. What a deal and it was so good! Again fabulous service from the staff. When we were ready to depart they called us a taxi. I highly recommend this for a stay in Southampton. The lounge/pub area is big and spacious. The food is ok. The rooms are clean but the furniture is quite cheap and is damaged on the corners of the side tables etc well they were in the family room that we stayed in and other wear and tear issues. If you are just staying for the night then I would recommend as was clean and staff are very nice.
