Room Clean, quiet, super hot water in the shower and aromatherapy toiletries in the bath. Gym Apparently small towns buddy up with the big hotels and the hotel gyms are well outfitted. Classes are offered. Pool is decent as well as a steam room and spa. All the machines and weights you need to help fight off jet lag. Bar dining area How is it that molten chocolate cake with it moltey chocolatey goodness topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream makes the preceding meal go away... and quickly. Even after finding the crusted, fire of the gods fused on crumb of food on the bottom of my spoon... the chocolate still made me happy. I did try to not lick the speed bump of food on the bottom of my spoon. Harbor town, they specialize in fish so i ordered the sole fillet in a wine sauce. What i get is a rolled up sole fillet smothered in something of a hollandaise sauce... luckily it didn't splash over onto my boiled new potatoes. Bland would have been an undeserving rave review for the flavorless tornado rolls of fish I was served. I had such high hopes too after the mini terrine of seafood chowder - hot- with topped with an over cooked half strip of bacon... pancetta for the gourmands. Overall come for the gym and nicely appointed rooms... tomorrow night I explore the tastes of Portsmouth thank you Yelp for expanding your domination of the Universe.

So I'm in Portsmouth for my last marathon of the year. When I booked my place, I searched the area…read morefor a nice hotel which was close to the start. I happened to stumble across No.4.... How lucky I was! This place is incredible. The decor, furnishing and food is very good but the best part of this place is the staff. Special shout outs to Kim and Lisa who work on reception. They really made the effort and provided customer service which I've found very hard to come by on my travels! For example: for a marathon breakfast, I tend to have yoghurt, granola and two bananas. I've stayed in places in the past where I've had to go and buy my own and make it in my room but at No.4, you don't need to worry about that. They will do it for you! Unreal! I had a standard double room which was clean, nicely sized with a separate shower room. The hotel has free wifi which is always a big hit with me...as you know! The location is great! situated in a quiet residential road with allocated parking at the front but also lots of a free parking available on the street. You're well located to get to the sea but equally into Portsmouth itself for all the shops and restaurants. Again, when asking where to go, Lisa kindly suggested a place which worked out really well for myself and my friends. All in all, five out of five easily...if there was an option for six I would definitely give it to them. A great, intimate hotel with excellent staff and customer service! Check it out!

The staff were attentive, friendly and accommodating - nothing seemed to be an issue for them. I've already recommended it to friends. Can't wait to go back to them and their sister hotels.

Manager - Alexandra (On duty 9.30am 11th July 2015)…read more Due to a late Ferry arrival in Portsmouth my daughter and I were forced to find accommodation for the night before catching our train the next morning. I choose the Ibis Hotel as it was close to the ferry terminal and being a French owned chain and an international hotel company i thought it would be ideal for our overnight stay. Mostly everything about the hotel was ok, not exceptional, but fine. The bedroom was small but our bed was comfy, the bathroom was very compact with a very weak shower that had barely any pressure with one of those multipurpose shower gel, shampoo, conditioner to wash with. We slept well and having prepaid for breakfast we went down to dining room early. This was the start of our trouble and quite frankly made our whole experience of staying at an Ibis Hotel a bitter one. Firstly the dinning room was packed, not one seat. Ok i thought we can eat in the sitting area adjacent. The biggest problem with that was no cutlery, no plates, no glasses and the food looked as if a horde of vikings had passed through... So basically no breakfast for WHICH WE HAD PREPAID FOR!!! I asked the young girl and she didn't have a clue - the breakfast is self service, ok fine. But have the food stocked, clean plates, cutlery, etc. Ready for the guest. There wasn't even someone from the kitchen to collect dirty dishes, it was so badly organised its no wonder that the place was in chaos. I went to the front desk and asked to check out, when asked about our stay i told the reception that it was ok, but explained the our issue with the breakfast. The young lady, Alexandra, who turned out to be the manager, was totally non plussed by the situation, made no effort to try and resolve the situation she just asked how I would like to PAY? I am standing with my 7 year old daughter, having had no breakfast and i'm faced with a manger that basically doesn't give a dam. I explained that we had prepaid for our breakfast and to take that off the bill, which she did reluctantly. But other then that there was no customer service to speak of, no apology, nothing that made me feel like a respected or welcome customer. I did ask to speak to the manager at this point when Alexandra told me she was the manager. I did enquire as to why they didn't have enough breakfast, plates, cutlery, etc. available when they knew they had a full hotel? Nothing of an explanation was offered in return. I was shocked by the experience, i am used to a hotel apologising and offering to take something off the bill, like the £9 pizza we had the night before. But Alexandra was not in the opinion that we should be offered any kind of gesture of goodwill. In fact she puffed herself up and said "i took the breakfast off the bill" to which i replied "WE DIDN'T GET TO EAT ANY BREAKFAST" So we were given nothing... What i find upsetting is that Alexandra didn't even offer my daughter a bread roll or some water before we left. Seeing my 7 year old daughter standing there i thought that that was the least she could have done. So i paid my bill and left hoping to find something to eat at the railway station knowing that I will never stay at another Ibis Hotel ever...

Very Highly Recommended…read more What a unique hotel with a great owner and team! Our party of four arrived after a short tour of Portsmouth. The hotel is hidden in plain site and can be difficult to find even though it stands out being a different color than the surrounding buildings. We rang the doorbell and were greeted by Ian the owner. I'm a life time elite member of a major hotel brand and I can honestly say I've never been treated as well as Ian and the folks there treated us. Alex offered refreshments and we sat in the beautiful garden where Ian was kind enough to talk about the history of the hotel and his involvement in making it into the beautiful accommodation it is today. After dinner we returned to hotel and once again enjoyed the garden. Our room was the smaller of two but was very comfortable, clean while reflecting the time period of long ago. The bathroom was like stepping into a time warp, very modern and up to date. Breakfast was outstanding and the room well decorated. If you only like chain hotels don't stay here but if you want to treated like family have an incredible experience in a building that's been throughly renovated with an incredible owner and team stay here! Other info: steps, we were on the top floor, so you have to climb steps, no A/C, each room has a small fan, it was in the 80Fs but we had no issues sleeping. Only 6 rooms, so book early. Free high quality WiFi.If we return to Portsmouth we will stay here
