I know this review is long but worth the time to read!
My family has been ordering from Shanghai Chinese Restaurant since it open and has ordered every New Years (food enough to feed 10, but only for 5). When we first started, it was a weekly treat for the family, which lasted ~ 8-10 years. As time went by and family grew up, it's now a monthly treat, which started ~ 8 - 10 years ago to present day (just ordered last week 9/15). Don't think this restaurant's been around 20 years, but it's been around as long as the Publix has.
My family have tried other Chinese takeout restaurants but here is where we always ORDER.
In all ~ 15+ years we've ordered, we've had only one mix up: it was a bigger New Years order, where anything could go wrong, was a missed item that sat in the kitchen (stayed warm) and not with order at time of pick up (an incident we and they both remember).
Shanghai is a 5-STAR restaurant, because the family who owns/runs it and its generation remembers who you are and what your order usually is. And I LOVE THIS!
Plus, you ever go to a restaurant where the food dish portion size have decreased to fit the increased cost and wonder why.
At Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, the portion size, no matter the specials, remains the same size since they began with a pennies on the dollar price increase and still a great SAVINGS for us. I enjoy going here and will continue to go.
My food REVIEW {in my opinion}:
*My egg dish is always the same, two patties, big and filled.
*Boneless spare ribs cut into small pieces, great to combine to eat with other foods or add to homemade fried rice dish, mmmmm yummy!
*Fried rice can be with or without meat (usually with peas, carrots, cabbage and/or onions).
*General Tso is always spicy and saucy.
*Lo mein is always great, meat or vegetable. It's so great, my family prefer to eat it cold the next day!
*Sweet & sour chicken or pork, great finger food not doughy; just right.
*Moo shu dish may or may not be spicy, both are good.
*Most spicy dishes still you taste the sauce not just the heat.
*A constant order is meat only fried rice and fried wonton; is always perfect.
*Cashew chicken, chicken w/vegetables or chicken w/garlic sauce is to DIE FOR!
*Spare ribs are juicy!
*Krab rangoon is so good you accidentally eat them all and WISH you had 2 orders!
*Stream dumplings have enough meat, soft and tasty!
*Shrimp with vegetables, enough shrimp for all the vegetables.
*Wonton and egg drop soups are hot and plenty wonton or egg.
Their lunch special includes a can soda and dinner includes an egg roll; either is great as we order dinner specials for lunch and buy a can soda!
May substitute white rice for fried rice.
Cost specials are great; best during our New Years.
Oh, before I forget, according to some New Yorkers who've eaten here states it's the closest to genuine NY style chinese food.
