Mary Ann was great with our two Frenchies. First time taking them there and we were kind of skeptical on how our dogs would react. Mary Ann is very knowledgeable on this type of breed of dog and she even provided us tips on feeding them and training them. The facility has many spaces for dogs and it seems like a comfortable place where the dogs would have fun. Prices are very reasonable. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this kennel. It is clean and the ladies running it truly care about the animals. They make their own treats and feed them to the dogs. The rooms are large and they get outdoor time. My dog was having a hard time and stopped eating. They started mixing wet food with her food to get her to eat. So loving and caring. read more

However when we reported that the dog was our nearby neighbors owners, the kennel proceeded to provide some rather racist comments. Due to the raggedy nature of the dog and potential flea infestation when we found him, the kennel asked us if the owners were Asian. Confused at first, we said no they were Caucasian. To this, they replied: oh you mean Hispanic? And at that time we had to clarify that they were white. To this, the lady replied: oh that's strange, I wonder why the dog wasn't taken care of. Shanderin Kennels was recommended to me by Colima Animal Hospital. Dr Sam is our family vet and has been taking care of my dogs for at least 10 years. He started with my two puppy frenchie bulldogs and my senior boxer. Every time my husband and I leave out of town for events, Shanderin Kennels is the only boarding day care I trust to leave my beloved pets at. I trust no one but Mary Ann, since I depend and rely on her to care for my frenchies and my pitbull. I have to say my dogs love her and appreciate her when they are at the kennel for the weekend. They know they get to play on the fun run and at least be inside watching TV inside. On another note, not only does Mary Ann and staff take care of the pets, this boarding kennel is very clean. I always see the guys washing down the floors, especially with disinfectant and soap. One of the major things I look at in placing my dogs in a kennel is number 1 if the person in charge is dependable, knowledgeable and reliable, and second, if the facility is clean. It meets and goes beyond my expectations. Mary Ann literally cares for all pets, probably not only my own, but gives attention to all dogs. By far the best experience for my dog and for myself. On Saturday morning We were greeted with a very warm welcome by Maryann. The environment was warm and welcoming which made it a lot easier for me. I suffer from separation anxiety and leaving my dog the very first time was a major hurdle for me. Boarded my dog for a weekend. When I made the reservation I was told $20 a day. When I picked her up I was charged $25 a day because she was an indoor dog. Charged me $40 for her grooming and they chopped her nails. Left one hanging which I didn't notice til I got home. My dog was trembling by the time we got her home. Our experience is with the feline side of the service. Because we travel quite a bit, we have utilized Shanderin Kennels quite a bit over the last five years. We have gotten to know Maryanne and Angel and think they are very lovely people who also happen to be absolutely terrific with the animals and especially with our temperamental cat, Tiger. You see, Tiger suffers from feline anti-social behavior. He doesn't like any cat, even his own family. When he was little, he bit off his brother's lip and he had to be put to sleep. Recently, we tried to have a play date with another cat and had her over. When those two were on the bed, he promptly pushed her off and she never returned. Tiger even attacked me once, unprovoked of course. Even with the fragility of our cat we trust this place 100%. He always has his own kennel. Tiger says that he hates coming here, especially with the chatty catties but we have no choice and Tiger is well compensated for his inconvenience. Tiger has always come back to us healthy and without anything he didn't already have. The rates are very reasonable as well and they accommodate to your cat's needs. We wouldn't choose any other place. read more

Also, I have a 12 year old dog that was doused with bleach and water. I picked her up and she was agitated and soaking wet. The place is not a good choice. I've left 1 male Dachshund at this location for a little over a week while our other female Dachshund was going through heat about 4 years ago. Debbie was staffed there and still is currently March 2014. I've volunteered for animal shelters so I understand the standard. Difference is animals like shelters better than the streets (happy dogs, usually) but home is better than shelters (unhappy dogs, usually). Remember that. Anyways he was kenneled in the indoor area for an extra fee we were willing to pay. We came by randomly to check on him and he was always fine. Sometimes the staff would have another dog in his pen to play with and to keep him entertained which was fine with us. A LOT of reviews are complaining about their dogs treatment on the outdoor kennels. The kennels are out in the elements. That's pretty obvious and not kept a secret. Extra blankets and special accommodations other dogs have are provided by the dogs owner or paid for. If you want that supply it or pay for it. They're not trying to hurt your dog and extras make them money so they're obviously going to be more than willing to provide them. Remember it's a kennel, close quarters in an outdoor communal setting. Dogs are around other dogs so sickness isn't a surprise. Your pet, like mine, will feel abandoned because they don't understand why they're there. This causes them to act in ways they don't at home. Chewing on themselves, not eating, peeing/pooping where they lay, licking themselves raw, rubbing against things, etc. My dog lost 3 lbs and only weighed 14 (always had food too) going in but I expected that and probably kennel cough (hello people "kennel" cough, Where'd you think it came from?). Luckily no illness but he was also inside and secluded. He put his weight on fairly quickly. It's an old kennel facility, it's outside, staff is low (to keep it affordable and it's not a hospital) but friendly and more than willing to make accommodations some for free some for a charge. It's a business not a charity. Remember it's a kennel, not a hospital. These are animals not people. Since pet owners are usually unfamiliar with kennels they don't understand that difference. For the price they charge and the staff they have they can't give every dog the attention they're used to at home. If you want your dog kept inside take him to Petsmart / a similar place for boarding or pay extra for it at Shanderin. It'll be 2-3 times the cost for boarding at other places. Shanderin treats your dogs fairly and has an open door policy where you can visit anytime. I take my dogs here regularly for grooming, and they hate it just like they do going to the vet, for nail clipping. It's the only local place that will cut them short enough where I don't have to come back every 2 weeks. Would give a higher rating if the facility was updated but no real complaints. I always see them cleaning kennels and walking dogs when I go there. Not much to complain about. read more

I've two large doggies - German Shepherd/Chow Mix & Lab/Pit Mix PROS: - Great pricing*Grooming Service: $35/day for both my dogs. Grooming - they hadn't known how much work it would be for my shepherd/chow, in the end it cost $80... but apparently she'd barked her way through the entire process so I don't mind paying a little extra for their patience. That and she came out looking pretty! Lab/Pit cost half that price. Also no charge for boarding that day. So you can drop off your dog in the morning, have it groomed and then pick it up in the afternoon for the charge of just the grooming. - Easy to book! Literally called them the Wednesday before the long Thanksgiving holiday and there was still space available. Paperwork was quick and painless. Depending on your preference, it could be a good or bad thing as to how little they inspect your dog before allowing them to be boarded. - Friendly Staff - Place is family owned so they're VERY informal. CONS: - Medication: I'd think twice about boarding my dog here if your dog requires special attention. One of my dogs had just gone to the vet for eye exam and I'd brought along medication that had to be applied to the eye, and also a pill that he had to take. The nice owner lady hadn't waited to read the instructions on the medication before trying to give it to my dog. I decided to wait until I came back from my trip to start treatment. - Food: No idea what they were feeding my dogs, I know it was only once a day but given the fact my shepherd/chow mix is a bit overweight and I usually feed them twice a day, this was a concern. - Space: Typical kennel, loud, space was tight. Just glad my dogs were kenneled together to keep each other company. I also don't know what state my dogs would've been in had I not had them groomed on the last day. In a pinch I'd use them again, but I would probably consider using my vet's boarding services first. read more

This place is greatly priced, however their care is not worth it. I took my dog in and the owner seems nice but she not very professional. But I gave the place the benefit of the doubt. I came to pick up my dog, and she had some guy bring out my dog, holding him the collar instead using a leash. I don't think that is professional at all but my boy is really nice and I just placed his harness on him. We walked outside of the building and he Yelped in pain when I pulled the harness because he didn't want to walk. I didn't think anything of it but when I took off his harness he had a huge red hot spot under his front leg. My poor dog was either allergic to whatever shampoo they used or the kennel they put him in was not clean ! I'm so disappointed that how much attention they give these poor dogs staying with them ! Please pay the extra money else where. You should be really ashamed of how your pet care is being ran ! read more

The staff was proactive in walking her and sending pictures via text. MaryAnne asked if I would like her to give Nala a bath before I come pick her up. I declined as I intended to bathe her myself. But MaryAnne gave her a bath anyway. Which was awesome. Nala was returned to me in happy spirits, clean, and healthy. I'm confident I will be coming back. First off, when I called, the lady that works there- Meredith if I recall correctly- had such a nasty attitude that I should have took that as a bigger red flag than I originally had. However, I needed to drop my dog off somewhere for the week so I took him here anyways. BIG mistake. When I came to pick him up, he couldn't wait to leave. He seemed like it was a traumatizing experience being there. He had also lost his voice while there from barking a lot. The lady also said that they almost lost him because he was able to escape from the kennel. These people don't seem like they're qualified to care for people's pets. Their bad attitude and lack of patience probably gets detected by these dogs. Will not come back and recommend that whoever reads this doesn't come either. read more

***WHAT? Somehow my review got deleted... outrageous! Let me tell you this, We've been taking our dogs here for a little over 10 years now. We haven't visited them in 3 years and boy have they changed. Their previous employee Debbie was sweet and wonderful, always offered us extra amenities. But the one working there now, is terrible, first of all they did not take care of my dog at all. It has been raining all week, and not only did they leave my poor baby out in the rain, my dog is covered in flea bites, smelled terrible and seem petrified! Her lips are covered in cuts and is rubbed raw. Her underside, between her thighs,and under both her armpits, were these horrible red bloody patches. It seemed she layed in her own urine mixed with some cleaning chemicals..(at least thats what it smelled like) anywhere where she had that smelly stain, she developed these patches, her skin and fur was practically falling off with each stroke... Her nose is dry and hot, I'm sure she caught a cold from being out in the rain for 3 nights. I'm writing this as I'm waiting at the veterinary office. When we went to the kennel about taking care of the vet bill or for them to provide any compensation, the girl at the front desk was being extremely rude. She immediately became defensive and refused to answer any questions. She rudely told US that we were being rude and told us that she refused to talk to us anymore and we should go talk to the owner instead. (we were NOT being rude at all, just simply asking question) She also lied about offering us insurance and also lied about asking us if we wanted our dog to be boarded inside or outside. She even forgot to sign her part of the contract or have me sign the release form. Then when we tried to point out that the contract said "owner or agent for the kennel" she then claims that "I dont care, I dont need to see the contract, I'm not the owner..I dont need to sign it..... The vet Dr Sam, the owner of this kennel and veterinarian of Colima Animal hospital is wonderful, the staff that works at the kennel is not. Please chose elsewhere...especially if it's raining out. Edit* 6:30pm Ok I just finish taking my dog to the vet, We found even more problems, her thighs and her elbows/knees and the webbing of her paw was covered in sores!!! It looked like a terrible rash, that may have been caused by her being soaked laying in the rain/urine/chemical. She had urine/smelly stain on her lower parts. THEIR vet from Colima Animal Hospital.. told us it is just allergies and it could not have been from sitting in urine or water.(she's never had allergies) They told me it wasn't their fault that the dog stayed out in the rain, and that she could of gone in anytime she wanted....what did you expect from a frightened puppy!!!? So if my dog was left out in the rain, soaked, catch pneumonia and died it would be my dog's fault?...unbelievable! I also have a youtube video on how bad her sores was. Edit*6:30pm 12/23/2010 We called back to ask for a refund, they told us that they are not responsible and that we need to get a second opinion and have proof from the second vet that they were the cause of my dog's pain... ridiculous! It may be a dog's choice to go inside; however, dogs do not have the capacity to know that being out in the rain for 3 days straight will make them sick. Upon seeing her remain in the rain for several days, the employees should have intervened and psychically brought her inside and made sure she was warm, dry and safe, leaving her outside was neglectful. Edit* 12/28/2010 Now my dog caught bordatella from that kennel. I'm outraged! We called them and they want nothing to do with us. Horrible service. The place seemed clean enough but I was there when it was 40 degrees and alot of the dogs had NO BLANKETS and nothing but a plastic bed with no bedding or coverage. Some dogs hadk coverage and some did not. I asked the woman managing why some of the dogs had no blankets and she said "they don't". It's bad enoug for a dog to be in a kennel but they need to keep these dogs warm and safe from the elements and they obvisously do NOT. read more

I was hospitalized for a month, and it was a sudden thing I had to find my dog a place to stay since I didn't have anyone to take care of her for a month. I had to find something within a day, luckily I took my dog to Colima animal hospital for her shoots and saw the brochure of this place decided to check it out. The fees are more affordable then pet smart and for a few bucks more they have an in door area which was not too bad, it's not as nice as pet smart but it sure is about 1/2 the price, especially I need to board my dog for a month, this will be more affordable. I took my dog and left her in the car so I can check out first. The place is hidden in the end of the street and behind a bigger building the front office is quaint and there is no bad smell so my first impression was good, I asked to see the indoor area, the lady took me to the back, as soon as I walked out the front office, a strong smell of pee overwhelmed me, I guess it normal since its a kennel there are over 15 dogs there and it was an out door area before I can get to the indoor area. I also saw some wet spots on the ground where some of the dogs were kept, not sure if that was water or dog pee. The in closed area are separated into an approximately 10'x 4' "cells" with a glassed French door so you can see in when the door is closwd, and a heatlamp above for the night. There is just one window on the back wall and both sides are solid walls so it's really like a mini prison cell and it's not very bright no Sun light could come in, although it's a bit depressing, but it's not that bad I said to myself it's better then a small wired kennel, at least it's big especially I have a tiny teacup Yorkshire terrier there should be plenty room. Lady told me they will feed and take the dog out for pee twice a day , with me desparate to find a place and with the discount they gave me for long term hoarding, I decided to leave my baby here . I called in to check weekly, they gave me good report each time, until my mother was able to look after my dog, and after mom took her home , I was told that my baby was in good spirit and seemed like she was not skinny or dehydrated, so it all appeared my dog adopted well to their care , she was a little stinky but thy was only because my mom picked her up too early before they had the chance to give her a bath. All and all I think this is not a bad choice for boarding your dog, I saw some horrible reviews from the past but I think the people there do take care of the dogs and seems like they also do try to take care of the place , they are low on staff I have only seen one lady there and there is man there on the weekend, but I would give this place a try if you don't want to spend $35 a day at pet smart. read more

My parents dog stayed here for one week. She has never been sick in her life or had ticks. We picked her up and she was VERY skinny, had a runny nose, was super congested (so much that you can hear her gasping for air) and terrible cough. I immediately took her to the vet and her ears had ticks and she was bleeding from her rectum. She's barely eating and has been on antibiotics for a few days now but we see very little improvement. I rescued a dog and needed a place to keep him until I found his perfect forever home. I was familiar with Shanderin Kennels so I spoke to Maryanne and she said to bring him on in. My big boy was boarded with Maryanne and the rest of the crew for five weeks until he was adopted. During his time at the kennel they made sure to let him play in the yard and to take him out on walks daily. The walks really helped to calm him down and socialize him more so as a result he was more adoptable. I am so thrilled because he has been adopted out to such a wonderful home that I could not have asked for better.
