The woman who returned my call was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and got us booked with an appointment for the following week on a Monday morning! The two gentlemen who showed up to our home were very nice, professional, and knowledgeable. They went right to work and seemed to have everything taken care of in not talk much time. Although I wish the results of our chimney inspection were better (thanks previous owners of the house), the inspection was thorough and seemed reasonably priced. The young gentleman who gave me the results of our inspection was actually the owner of the company and said they would be emailing over photos of the complete inspection along with an estimate for any repairs we would need to have done before potentially installing a wood stove. In any case I figured I'd have these guys check it out and do a "service" on it since it hasn't been serviced since I bought it. I called and pressed 2 for service. The person who answered for the service department gave me the phone number of "a guy they use". Well the guy is on vacation until the end of the month?! So I call back and they give me another number. I call that number and get voicemail. A week later I get a voicemail back saying sorry it took so long to get back and that he will be in my area in a couple of weeks if I want to call back. I called back and surprise, surprise, no answer. Still waiting on a call back. If you are going to advertise "Sales and Service" you have to provide service, not leave your customers out in the cold! (or in this case inside in the cold).

We hired Hearth Doctor to install a Renaissance 600 fireplace--a pricey, complex unit--and they botched it from start to finish. Safety ignored: They skipped a required radiation shield and told me to stuff insulation against the chimney pipe--an outright fire hazard. Only after I contacted the manufacturer did they reluctantly fix it, which meant removing a chimney already mounted two stories up. Timeline blown: A 2-day job dragged into 3.5 months, with constant delays and misinformation to my contractor. Poor workmanship: They mis-measured, forced rebuilds, denied necessary vents (later confirmed essential by the manufacturer), installed the unit with a broken door, then crudely bent the keyhole instead of replacing it. Finally, the fireplace was left visibly off-level, making finishing work nearly impossible. No accountability: Across six visits between June and September, I never received an apology. When I asked for a discount, they brushed me off, insisting they'd provided a "safe, functional, professional installation" that went "above and beyond" If this is their idea of "above and beyond," I shudder to think what "average" looks like. Bottom line: unsafe, sloppy, unprofessional. Save yourself the grief--do not hire this company.

I always assumed that because I was getting an annual furnace tuneup and cleaning that that was enough. Turns out I was wrong! Boiler technicians aren't chimney experts and things do build up over time. I contacted Dana at Larabee Chimney Services--he had actually helped install my then-new chimney liner ten years ago along with Pickett's which is how I was referred to Dana. (I was very happy with Pickett's.) He confirmed our appointment the night before and then, per my request, called when he was on his way. He and his helper inspected my chimney and liner. Turns out it didn't need a cleaning. I had my checkbook ready and asked how much? NO CHARGE! As a homeowner I really value contractors who are honest, experienced, professional, personable and charge a fair price, and that defines Dana!
