Still processing the theatrical experience of "Fences" by August Wilson. The writing is brilliant and the cast equally so. I've never felt as though my standing ovation and enthusiastic applause was completely inadequate to express my gratitude for this performance. I've never been given so much from both playwright and cast, I'm humbled and deeply grateful to have seen this show. The experience came at me from multiple angles as many issues with multiple levels were addressed. Usually there's one or two standout performances but this cast is truly an ensemble of extremely talented thespians. I raved about everyone's performance and the many nuances of their interpretations of this piece. I have an extensive background in theatre and I'm not an easy grader but I was transported today! I have no notes, none! I wish this cast would tour with the play so that many people could see their work and I feel privileged to have done so today.

Took my 10 year old daughter here twice this summer. She was mesmerized. Nice intimate theater experience. I will be going back!

This is not merely a terrific summer production in the Berkshires, it would be wonderful in NYC or London.

The Skin of Our Teeth left me wondering what Thornton Wilder, the playwright was smoking or…read moretripping on. It is inconceivable to me that this play, which begins with the Ice Age and forwards 5000 years could have won the Pulitzer Prize (the pullet surprise) for literature in 1943. We meet the Maggie Antrobus (Harriet Harris) and George Antrobus (Danny Johnson) and their maid Sabina (Ariana Venuri). References to the Rape of the Sabine Women and Lilith, the eternal temptress, are there to tempt Mr. Antrobus. The play includes sexual politics and Oedipal confrontations. The first act seems most relevant to our time with climate change when in August, the inhabitants of Excelsior, NJ experience the effects of an advancing glacier. Mrs. Antrobus castigates Sabina for allowing the fire to go out. (Does this sound similar to scientists' reactions to our current government officials?) The family including their son Henry (Marcus Gladney, Jr.), originally named Cain complete with a mark on his forehead, and their daughter Gladys (Claire Saunders) survive freezing temperatures in Act I, a flood of Biblical proportions in Act II along with the animals in an ark, and a devastating war in Act III. Perhaps in the last scene, which repeats the beginning of the play, Wilder is trying to say that these cataclysmic cycles go on and somehow mankind survives. However, this screwy plot with Mr. George Antrobus inventing the wheel and lever as a dinosaur and woolly mammoth take the stage with them in Act I set the tone for a totally improbable evening. Casting ignores race, I guess as a nod to the continuance of mankind.

Probably the most interesting art museum in Mass. If you're in the Boston area, it is a bit of a…read moredrive--we turned it into a weekend getaway, and it was worth it. The museum is massive, with tons of exhibits. You'll find a mix of contemporary art, immersive installations, plus regular live performances. We spent hours exploring/wandering. Some exhibits lean abstract or experimental, so it helps to go in with an open mind, but that's part of the appeal. Overall, it's a must-visit, and I hope to come back to catch their dusk/dawn exhibit, which seems to be a staple.

We have always enjoyed our time there but prefer to go a bit less often so we don't keep seeing the same things. The buildings are so cool but it is large and a little confusing to navigate. As with any art, there's been certain exhibits we've loved and others that weren't as interesting to us. It would be cool to have some more info about what the building used to be and how it used to look. I think the price could be prohibitive for a lot of people or for families. I am not knowledgeable about contemporary art but I like browsing here. We have done one of the free tours before as well. There are some times exhibits and those require advance booking online (the cost in included). This means many times, there were no slots available during the days and times we'd planned to visit. That felt like some people were getting "more for their money" and like we'd missed out. There was a roller coaster that ran once per hour and so I think members got first choice of spots so there was no availability for months (we never did get to experience the ride). There are a few James Turrell experiences that also require pre-registration. This makes it impossible to see them if you do a spontaneous visit.

My three brothers, dad and I just finished up a week long timber framing course here at Heartwood…read more It was a pretty good experience. Pros: Michelle - She manages the business end and handles meals. She was incredibly helpful and always very pleasant. Dave - He's one of two instructors and most of what I got out of the course came from working with him one-on-one. He's super talented and all of my encounters with him were positive. I (along with most other people in the course) sought Dave out for any questions and help. The food - Michelle put together a great lunch every day. The skill set - I walked away from this week confident that I could handle basic layouts and build a structure using the skills I learned here (which is the whole point of the course). The safety - The instructors take safety very seriously and quickly react to any questionable behaviors. Cons: Class size - There were 26 people enrolled in the course including four "apprentices" which left two instructors who knew what they were doing to teach all of us. Organization - The first half day was spent sitting in a classroom watching minimally helpful overhead sheets and the second half watching demos. It would have been very easy to integrate hands on exercises on scrap wood and mix this information in over time. Barn raising - Friday was dedicated to assembling the frame we built Tuesday through Thursday. There were too many hands for too little work. Dave said you need a max of fourteen people to raise a structure like the one we built. You had to actively fight to participate. The "apprentices" - Really two of the four were actually pretty good and cared about learning. The other two seemed to cause more problems than they fixed. Ultimately I learned a lot from Dave while I was here (and Brad, another instructor who was there for one day was also great). Will was pretty impatient and not particularly helpful. The mix of people who were taking the course was about 50% carpenters (some with timber framing experience and some without) and 50% from random backgrounds (some teachers, a cobbler, some IT folk, a student, etc). Everyone was able to keep up and a carpentry background really isn't necessary. The group instruction wasn't that helpful but if you take the time to seek out knowledgable staff (or peers who have already done a piece you're working on) you can learn a lot here. It's really what you make of it. If you're looking to get a basic crash course in timber framing this is a good place to get it (despite class size and some other kinks). You can make as many mistakes as you need to (and should, this is a great way to learn) and someone will be able to show you how to correct it before you try this on your own.
