When I called back later to see if maybe someone else would pick up and help me, I mentioned I had called in earlier. The line went silent. Then she told me they were "not currently scheduling any tours". She was perfectly willing to book one when we called the first time. In short, this was handled in a very rude manner on their end. Both the magazine ad and their site are false advertising.

We set off on Thursday, January 14th, under mostly sunny skies, gentle winds, and smooth calm waters. Once at the harbor we met Captain William, and his first mate, Chris. Both, well seasoned and professional, William follows the whales, in Alaska in Summer, while Chris does wildlife bus tours in Alaska. Both then head to Hawaii, for winter migration. Once aboard the Comfortable LavaKai, we headed out of port. Within seconds of heading out of to sea, we had our first sighting, the adventure had begun! First, a couple of blowhole water spouts, then so many more sightings, too numerous to count! Captain William, and Chris were as stoked as we all were! We experienced a full body out of the water Breech, a 40x tail fop, and even a cow & calf with escort family pod cruise along side of us! The tour was awe inspiring, a memory to last a lifetime! The boat, The LavaKai, was clean and comfortable, we were treated like guests,with fresh baked banana bread and shortbread served on a silver tray, as well as juice,water and chocolate covered macadamia nuts. We were very impressed by their hospitality. William and Chris are both following their bliss and it shows, they have a genuine love for sharing the majesty that the humpback whales display. We felt like partners of an adventure, rather than just another ticketed customer on a scripted tour. Highly recommend for the experience, the hospitality, and the professionalism. An Amazing Kona Coffee Experience…read more Greenwell Farms was one of the highlights of our Big Island trip! This is a coffee farm and tour experience, so just to clarify, they do not serve food here. The experience is focused on learning about how Kona coffee is grown and processed, touring the farm, and sampling their coffees. Our tour was about an hour, and we had such an amazing time. Our guide was a woman whose name I believe was Leilani (possibly Lenny or Lee), and she was absolutely adorable -- especially walking around in her cowboy boots! She was knowledgeable, friendly, and made the whole experience really enjoyable. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone who visits. Because of a major storm in May, the farm had suffered significant damage, including losing a bridge, so we received a modified tour. Even with the changes, we learned so much about the coffee-growing and production process, and it was fascinating to see everything firsthand. Hearing about the damage they experienced also gave us an even greater appreciation for the farm and what they've been working through. The tour is outdoors and seems appropriate for a wide range of ages. We happened to have a cloudy morning, so the weather was perfect for walking around the farm without getting too hot. Parking was easy and available right on site. A little tip: Wear comfortable sneakers and make sure you have good balance. There are some areas of the farm with gentle inclines and declines, so it's not completely flat. Since the bridge was out, there was also less walking than there normally would be. And of course, the coffee sampling was such a fun part of the experience! If you're visiting the Big Island and want to learn more about authentic Kona coffee rather than just buying a bag at a store, I highly recommend putting Greenwell Farms on your itinerary. We're so glad we went. It was educational, relaxed, beautiful, and genuinely fun -- and our guide made it that much more memorable. Sip on free samples while you wait or check out merchandise to purchase and support. Do NOT wander as it's an actual working farm with moving machines and vehicles. Stay off roads and watch for moving vehicles. Be cautious of signs and closed off areas. Wear comfortable and safe shoes. It's all walking on uneven dirt and rock. Sunblock, hat, and sunglasses as you are outside the whole time. They provide free umbrellas to borrow during the tour, but they can block views of others on the tour and can become unintentionally obnoxious and rude, and cause potential eye injury hazards. Your guides are great and share so much history on the farm, the trees and plants, the island, the coffee, and the family. Be sure to TIP generously and listen to them QUIETLY and intently. We had about 30 Scouts and family members join us, and the whales absolutely showed up! We saw pods everywhere, tail slaps, and even a full breach. The highlight was when a humpback surfaced about 10 yards from the boat, giving the kids a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The crew also dropped the hydrophone, allowing everyone to hear the whales singing underwater, which was an incredible learning experience for the Scouts. Moments like that truly connect our youth with the ocean and the amazing wildlife here in Hawaiʻi. Ocean Sports continues to impress us every year. Booking was easy, waivers were handled electronically, check-in was smooth, parking simple, and the hospitality from the crew was outstanding. The guides took the tour out to the Captain Cook Monument, where the snorkeling was cool. The water was clear, the marine life plenty, and it ended up being one of the best snorkeling spots I've experienced. One tip: be sure to rent the flippers when you sign up. They made a huge difference and helped a lot in the water. They are not provided from the all in tour price. For the tour price you get the ride and snorkel mask with a floaty. They also rent life jackets if you need that. This tour is definitely geared toward people who are comfortable swimming and being on an open-air boat. If you're nervous in the water or can't swim or prefer a more relaxed boat ride, this isn't it. If you're looking for excitement, it's hard to beat. What really made the experience special were the crew members. Our captain and lifeguard were laid-back, friendly, and made everyone feel safe while keeping the atmosphere fun. The highlight for me was racing along the coastline at nearly 50 knots, bouncing across the waves and taking in incredible views of the island. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Think twice before booking with this company…read more I chose this excursion because it was shorter (2.5 hours) while still including snorkeling and a tour of the Captain Cook area. Unfortunately, the experience did not meet expectations. The first issue was the check-in process. The confirmation email tells guests where to meet but does not provide clear instructions on where to check in. Parking at this harbor is extremely limited, and Kona traffic can be very congested. Ironically, the company's own confirmation email emphasizes allowing a one-hour buffer before and after the tour and specifically advises guests not to schedule anything within an hour of the excursion. That warning exists for a reason. Despite everyone else arriving on time, our departure was delayed by nearly 30 minutes because the crew chose to wait for two guests who were stuck in traffic. As a result, every passenger who arrived as instructed lost approximately 30 minutes of a tour they had paid for while standing in the heat waiting. It felt unfair that those who planned accordingly were penalized because others did not. I expressed my irritation to the lifeguard assigned to our boat and was met with a dismissive response rather than an acknowledgment of the inconvenience. Once we finally departed, the captain welcomed everyone and said to let the crew know if we needed anything. During the safety briefing, I asked if my son could have some water. Instead of simply providing it or explaining when it would be available, I received a sarcastic response, and my son was not given any water. While the scenery and destination are beautiful, the customer service and handling of these situations left much to be desired. Better communication, adherence to the published schedule, and more respectful interactions with guests would have made for a much better experience.
