Great first time kayaking thanks to islander kayak. We were able to see dolphins multiple times which made snorkeling the icing on the cake. Thanks for the help Rocky! Good suggestion for food(poke) afterwards as well

Memories to last a lifetime! We rented 2 double kayaks from Bay Side Adventures. I called last minute (on the drive over from Waikoloa) and they booked our reservation. Had our kayaks and dry bags ready to go, so when we arrived, all we had to do was sign the waivers (all automated on iPads). Great friendly service and staff. Ciela (sp?) was great. She made us feel welcome and put my 2 teens at ease (they were a little nervous about going out without a guide). Before going out, she gave us instructions on where to go, how to get off/on kayaks whilst in water and answered any questions. Went out early at 8:30am. Highly recommend going out in the early morning to get to Kealakekua Bay before the tour boats arrive. It was about a 20 minute paddle out to the bay. Visibility was incredible and it was by far the best snorkeling we experienced on our trip. Saw pods of Spinner Dolphins, Moray Eels, and an incredible amount and variety of fish. We have our own snorkel gear, however they have equipment to rent if you need it. Recommend water shoes. Parking was a little tricky but we were lucky as we were there early so there was an area down the street to park.

If you find yourself on the Big Island, you must take yourself to Kealakekua Bay. The Bay is the site of Captain Cook's arrival and departure (death). His monument at the Bay is a historical marker in Kealakekua. It's only reachable via boat/kayak or long swim. We booked our kayaks on Yelp. Drove down the winding road to The Bay. Seani met us at the dock, and with a short intro sent us on our way. 20 minutes in a school of dolphins (10-15) showed up. Kayaked for few more minutes and snorkeled near the monument, probably the best spot on the bay. I recommend going early for this trip. At about 10 am the tourist charters start showing up with boat loads of ppl. Get to the bay at least by 8 am. Bring water and snacks to carry on kayak too.

If you want to do Captain Cook on your own without the tour boat and/or don't want to do the strenuous hike, renting a kayak from Bay Side Adventures is the way to go! We had a little trouble finding the launch point thanks to Google Maps. However, Bay Side pointed me in the right direction after a quick phone call. We were only a couple blocks away, and their staff was there waiting for us. They help you load up your boat and give you a dry bag with your permit and life vests, and answer any questions. They tell you where to go and help you get in your kayak and you basically have the rental for the day. We were lucky and were only one of three boats in the whole bay that morning. A pod of dolphins was swimming around, and I got to swim with them. There was even a baby! I kept my distance, but they weren't shy and a few swam up close to check us out. It was my second time swimming with wild dolphins, but that didn't my make it any less exciting! After the dolphins left, I was just hanging out in the water when my eyes caught something large moving toward me. I thought maybe it was a lone dolphin. Nope! No such luck! It had big sharp teeth and was huge and shiny and coming towards me. I immediately got back in the kayak as fast as I could. I knew it wasn't a shark, but something that large and fast moving with teeth is never good. When we arrived back on land, I described it and was asked if it was a giant barracuda. A quick google search showed that was definitely what I saw. Yikes! So just be careful since those things will take fingers off. Snorkeling was pretty good over by the monument, but I was still panicked from the barracuda so we didn't stay too long. It was only the second time we've ever kayaked (last time was in a tour on Oahu), and we felt perfectly comfortable with it. The waters in the bay are calm and it's easy to figure out where to go. Coming back was no problem, other than we were tired from all the swimming. Towing the kayak while snorkeling wasn't a big deal either (you can't dock at Captain Cook). The staff was so nice and helpful with the whole process from booking to returning the rental. I will definitely rent from them again if I return to big island.

The same view the locals get.

Bay Side Adventures should be the only company that you need for your adventure needs. You can book on Yelp, by phone, by website or by text message. They are a full service, local, family-run business. There is no doubt they are some of the nicest people on the island. The two that have been present each time we've booked through them has been a Dad and his daughter. Can you get any cuter than that? Parking for this can be tricky. Just look for all the other cars parked along side the road, and you're golden. On our most recent trip, we took out a triple and a double kayak. The kayaks were down by the entry by the time we got there. When you call, they'll ask when you're arriving, and they will have the kayak ready for you. They have EVERYTHING you could possibly need. They give you dry bags for your stuff and offer snorkels if you need it. We brought all of our own things. You should also pack food for your trip. They will strap everything you need into your kayak for you. Before you know it, you'll be on your way to one of the best days of your trip. After about 20-30 (wind pending) minutes, you'll be out to the Captain Cook monument. You can't dock, but just hang onto your bow line, and you can snorkel around with your kayak. It's actually easier than it sounds. Imagine this--a peaceful kayak trip, snorkel with amazingly beautiful fish, see some dolphins on the way, lunch on your own time, no power boat needed, and unlimited time to do what you want? It's a no brainer! There is no time limit. You can return your kayak whenever you are ready. Don't forget to bring a waterproof camera!

Despite the disadvantage, the tour guide still found a way to keep the tour engaging with lots of fun facts, history and merriment. I enjoyed my time here and we also took home some coffee.

Thankfully, they had space for our entire group for the sunset time (615pm check-in) and we didn't have to wait for the late-late slots. Online booking was easy-peasy (no kama'aina discount, unfortunately). We checked in (parking is street parking and there are several boats leaving from the same area, so it can be a bit of a challenge) pretty easily - there were folks out front directing us where to go for Sea Quest. I decided the $35 for the GoPro rental was a steal compared to trusting my waterproof phone pouch and I have no regrets - you can leave the camera running the whole time and they give you the SD card at the end. It was no trouble to do that once we got there, as I didn't add that when booking. They have a decent gift shop and the keiki in our party bought themselves some stuffed souvenirs. We got fitted for shorty wet suits and prescription masks if needed, and then waited for them to split us into boats and groups. We were accompanied in the water by Wylen (sorry if I butchered the spelling) and Abram, and they had the perfect blend of aloha, humor, and information. Super chill, but you also knew they meant business about Rule Number 1. From there, we boarded the boat, a small zodiac-style craft, for the 5 minute journey to Manta Village. The website made it seem like we could leave things on board, but that really wasn't the case. We left all bags, clothing, towels in a secure room on shore, slippers got collected on the pier, and small things like eyeglasses were stored in a bin on the boat. No trouble, but I wouldn't plan to take anything with you on the boat. Getting into the water was easy, and we had one keiki who was a little apprehensive about everything - they took great care to lower him into the water, and when he wanted to go back to the boat a little early, they accompanied him back to the ladder no problem. There were plenty staff around to help and also identify the mantas by their markings. And there were SO MANY mantas! We had an amazing evening watching them - I lost count and forgot many names, there were so many swimming past. We had 30-40 minutes in the water and we had multiple mantas around us the whole time. I thought the time was plenty - by the time we had about 5 minutes to go, my stomach was ready to be back on land. My only regret is not stretching my triceps beforehand - I was not expecting my arms to be so sore after holding onto the bar around the light board! We paid $135ish plus fees per person (all ages) and it was the highlight of the trip, for sure.

I'd give the *tour*, which they only do a couple times a week, so we had to adjust our schedule a bit to make it to one, a 4/5. It was interesting, but you don't actually get to see any chocolate being made, a lot of it was just discussion (albeit: discussion while standing in a production cacao orchard - I'd never actually *seen cacao trees in person, they are pretty cool! Cool, but also full of spider webs.) They also cut open a fresh, ripe, not-processed-yet cacao bean at the end of the tour, and we got to try a little bit (it's delicious - sweet and fruity, nothing like chocolate. I wish we'd gotten to eat a bit more of it, honestly.) It was an interesting tour, not sure it was worth the extra planning it took to be there for it though - other than the fresh cacao fruit, you don't get anything you can't also try in the gift shop any time of day.

Una gave us a ton of cool information about the farm, the types of plants, history of the island, native plant qualities, and so on. The whole tour and tasting took ~2 hours, but I could see it going longer or shorter depending on the number of people visiting and the number of questions about the farm. Normal tours are usually 14-16 people total. Our kids (ages 10 and 11) loved the tour. There were two other 9 year olds and a couple other older kids on the tour, and they all had a good time. I could definitely see some kids being a bit bored by the end, but I think the history they learn here will stick with them, so maybe some boredom isn't too bad :) We ended by sitting on the lanai and having a tasting of chocolates, some fruit, and coffee-- all of which were amazing. You have the chance to purchase these before leaving, and be sure to do that because you can't buy any of these anywhere else, even online. By the end of the tour, we felt like Una and Leon were part of our family. I highly recommend this tour, if only because it's local and not tied to any larger farms or corporations. You can ask as many questions as you like, and maybe by the end you'll feel like family too :) Pro tips: - The mosquitoes are no joke, at least near the parking lot (they seemed fine everywhere else). Be sure to wear long pants (it's cooler up that side of the mountain) and apply the mosquito spray that Leon provides when you arrive! - Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to find the farm. Google Maps will send you to the wrong place, but Apple Maps seemed to do well. Either way, follow the directions sent by Leon and Una and you'll be fine. - The road up to the farm is janky, but totally doable with 2-wheel drive. Just take your time.

Jeff had made sure to let us know beforehand if we experienced any issues to speak up. I was hesitant as I know it would mean turning the whole tour around, but some tingling turned to dizziness and then a brief fainting. He immediately stopped the bus and helped ground me and make sure I was completely okay & coherent before letting me know our options for the tour. We made it up to the top with 2 more (included in tour) stops and I felt better with each one having more time to acclimate :) Thank you Jeff!! You handled this so professionally and I appreciate your check-ins for the rest of the trip. It's cold even with parka and gloves. It's so worth packing warm shoes and layers.
