Joshua, Sam and the third guy (sorry forgot to jot your name down, but he was from North Dakota) were amazing guides for our group! We had a few no shows, so it was a small group that headed out to Captain Cooks. The kayak portion itself is not difficult as long as you have kayaked before. The trip over took about 20mins and was not super strenuous. Getting into and out of the kayaks from the loading dock was more challenging than the trip itself, but the guides talked us through and helped us in and out of the kayaks. I would say if you have not kayaked or if you have any physical limitations this may not be the excursion for you as there is not a convenient loading/unloading shore so you end up dropping into and climbing out of the kayaks while they are still on the water. The guides did an amazing job at tethering us and helping us in and out but I would say it would be a bit intense for first time kayakers. Over at captain cooks, the snorkeling was amazing! They provide you fins, mask and life vest (optional) and then we had an hour to snorkel about. I highly recommend taking the early kayak tour as when we got to the monument there were only a handful of people so we could swim about really not come close to others, but by the time we left there were multiple boats of snorkelers that had come in and it gets busy in the water. There were so many vibrant fish, and the reef is gorgeous. I didnt want to leave the water. After snorkeling Joshua had a few bags of chips and some water for us and then we packed up and kayaked back to the loading area. Overall it was an amazing experience! read more

Joshua was a great guide for our kayak and snorkel tour to the Captain Cook monument! This was a very cool experience and a great spot to snorkel! Very worthwhile. It's a great spot to see lots of fish and we even saw a turtle which Joshua said was not common for that spot! The water is very clear! I do think helps to how to kayak and be prepared for a potentially strenuous journey. It doesn't take long but especially after snorkeling/swimming for an hour, the trip back was hard! They provide life jackets and you can wear it while snorkeling. My husband did because that makes him feel more comfortable in the water. read more

THE worst and most horrific touring company. Can you imagine you are there to have fun and had to call 911 to report injuries imposed by the tour guide? This happened to me on the morning of March 16, 2022. I got dragged down to the ground by the tour guide on the ground before the tour and had to call 911 (my first time ever) to report on the incident. There were multiple cuts and bruises on both of my knees, and the cuts were bleeding. I arrived before 8 am to the site per instruction, as witnessed by my Uber driver. I met with the tour guide Doug, signed a waiver, left my bag in their van, and was told to use the public restroom next to the parking lot for the last time. He did not say anything about staying put or giving lessons. I went to make a quick change and when I came back, the other tour guide JC said I was late, and he was whatat was not going to take me. I was very confused, and Doug played deaf (seriously, after multiple times I begged him for help) and left in a boat. And then the other very rude tour guide JC was going to leave as well. I wanted to find out what's going on, at least to get my bag back from their van, and he just ignored me... Then JC pushed me down onto the floor, scratched my knees, and kept repeating that people have to arrive before 8:20 - I don't know if he's mad or mindless or both. Evidently his colleagues Doug signed me in before 8 am, but he just denied it without listening. All my witnesses said JC was so unreasonable, but he claimed I acted erratically.. the above scenario was witnessed by multiple people standing by and a lady from California can be my witness (I have her contact if the tour guide is to lie). I am one regular city girl from NYC. I am writing this from the Napoopoo pier where the tour is supposed to start. I attest to every single word that I said above. I called their head office and no one was there to help... Adventure in Paradise company turned out to be torture in hell. Avoid. read more

I really intended to leave a 2 star review but since my email to the manager has gone unanswered for over a week and a half, it is sadly 1 star. I wanted to let the manager know about our experience before I posted it, but I have not been contacted. I was not looking for any compensation, just acknowledgement of the experience. Please note that in all my reviews on yelp I have only given this dreaded 1 star on two other occasions. Most of my reviews are 3s and 4s. I have been travelling for over 20 years extensively and never experienced the lack of professionalism I witnessed from Jason and Lalu near the end of our tour. Trip started out well as we arrived early ready to go and they both worked on getting the day started. Things seemed a little unorganized but we overlooked it. Once all of the guests arrived, minus two people who didn't show up, we were given instructions and we got going. The trip to the monument area was beautiful and my husband and I had an amazing time snorkeling and exploring the area near the monument. The site is amazing and the fish were everywhere. It was a great snorkeling experience, but things started to deteriorate once it was time to return to the initial launch site. When it was time to launch our kayaks for the return trip, they noticed that someone without permits had landed their kayaks at the shore. Jason and Lalu then made the decision to push those kayaks off the shore because those people did not have a permit to access the shoreline. They simply pushed those kayaks into the water and let them drift free. I am not aware of the policies or procedures surrounding the restricted shoreline and cannot comment on the legality of what they did, but I did find it interesting that they moved someone else's kayaks and let them potentially drift out to sea. This is when things started going downhill between Jason and Lalu. Lalu was still on shore as we paddled back and we did not see him when we returned to the launch site. My husband and I were the first guests to arrive back at the launch site and waited for Jason until he gave us the all clear to come in. We waited for the rest of the guests and Lalu to return, but Jason had to bring us in by himself because Lalu had not yet returned. After the first few guests had disembarked on shore, Lalu finally arrived. At that point, we began hearing passive-aggressive comments between the Jason and Lalu. This escalated into into a shouting match between them, including numerous expletives being shouted. It appeared to be based on whether they should have touched those other kayaks before we had returned. There was swearing and we were legitimately concerned things would escalate into a physical altercation. None of the guests knew what to do at that point. We all pretty much walked away feeling like we had been having a good experience and it was all messed up and ugly when it was over. Our trip to Hawaii was nothing short of fabulous with this one exception - and it was a big one. I would not recommend this company to anyone. read more

Such an INCREDIBLE experience Kayaking and Snorkeling with an extra bonus entertaining history lesson in the middle of the ocean. WOW

I highly recommend the Captain Cook Kayak tour. We loved it. Our guide Jason was a bit late showing up that morning which gave me concern that I was in the wrong location, but he eventually showed up. Jason operates on Maui pace, which was initially frustrating, but by the time we got on water, I embraced it. The tour itself takes you along some beautiful views of the cliffs. Jason provided content all along this journey. When we got to the Monument we got off and snorkeled for probably an hour and half. I have snorkeled in a lot of places, but this place tops the chart. It is by far the best snorkeling I have ever done with beautiful fish and coral. Water clarity was around 75-100 feet underwater. The time in water was just right. I had gotten my fix of snorkeling for the day. Jason had simple snacks available, which we chowed down. You don't realize how hungry you get swimming. The nice thing about this tour is if you go by guide, you can moor your kayak on shore. If you go with other rental companies, you are not allowed to moor your kayak and must tow it with you as you snorkel. Not fun and you will get fined and your kayak seized. Go in the morning, because by noon it was hot on the water. We did the 7am-12pm tour. Cost was around 120 a person with fees and taxes. Jason, Nice job! We wish you well and thank you for referring us to Korner Pocket. That place was excellent. read more

Hard to accurately rate a company that was 1-1/2 hours late, requiring us to cancel out because we needed to be on schedule to make a cruise return time. Their guides don't seem to hold schedule, and on this day they only had one guide, probably causing the delay. Go with Kona Boys, we saw them in operation and everything looked flawless, while we waited and waited. read more

Had a bad experience with this company two days ago. I was snorkeling at kealakekua bay and was trying to exit in the location where it is safe to do so. When I looked up to check my bearings I was yelled at to get out of the way of the kayaks they were trying to launch towards me. I had to go over and exit in the rocky area. I tried to ask who and what they were doing and after getting the cold shoulder they begrudgingly said who they were. This company only cares about getting people in and out as fast as possible and didn't care they were actually in a state park or that they were being disrespectful to others trying to enjoy it. When snorkeling near shore it's hard to know that someone is trying to launch kayaks over your head. Please find a better company to book for your outing that is considerate towards everyone and the state parks everyone is trying to enjoy. read more

We had a great time snorkeling with our guide Miles. He was very engaged and knowledgeable throughout the entire trip. We enjoyed learning about the history of the Hawaiians and Captain Cook in Kealakekua Bay. The best part was Miles going snorkeling with us and pointing out all sorts of cool fish and marine life. I would recommend going early - we went at 7:00 which was definitely not a minute too early. In general with all the activities during the August heat, with the only exception of Waimea or Volcano, doing strenuous activities in the early morning is an absolute MUST. After 10:00 am it was usually just too hot for my wife and I who are pretty sensitive to heat. At least in Pololu valley and Kona things were brutally hot in the afternoon and made us move 10x slower lol. Also make sure you wear sunscreen - even at 7:00. I didn't get burned that much because we were careful about sunscreen, wearing a hat, and trying to go early when possible. Caesar and Miles were awesome guides. They were especially good at helping people up and down the sea ledges (ladder provided) or in and out of kayaks - which was really quite important even for someone with good balance. My wife was in her 2nd trimester and this was one of the most pregnancy-friendly activities we did. Once you get in the water you pretty much just float around and observe the beautiful coral and fish. I wouldn't recommend going if you can't kayak for 30 minutes or have a really really tough time with balance. It was cool hearing about the history of Captain Cook and King Kamehameha - only thing is it was a bit hard to hear Caesar if we were paddling a little further away. Not much you can do about that, but it just means what he was saying went in and out a bit. We came here to the Big Island from California. And Ofcourse, we're trying to do as many activities as we can before we leave. My wife calls this place with a few questions of concern before we make the online purchase. After a few questions this guy by the name Bob tells her, your asking too many questions go online and read it. I call this A hole back and asked him do you normally tell customers they're asking too many questions and go look online, and he says yes and hangs up on me. No way I would spend a dime with some one who is rude, disrespectful, unprofessional, and short with the tourist who keeps this business alive. What a jerk. read more

This may be one of the most unprofessional companies I have ever tried to use, yet it was somehow recommended in the Moon Big Island travel guide. So the day before your trip you will receive multiple messages reminding you about the trip, and reinforcing their no-show policy. Morning of, you wake up early to make sure you arrive on time, and wait for an hour for the tour guide to show up; no one comes. You call and email the company, nothing. They then call you back claiming to not know how this could have possibly happened. Finally, they send someone out there who does not have appropriate customer skills. This person ends up making lots of excuses, weaving in obvious lies, and starts a screaming match with one of your fellow companions who is also waiting for the tour. Then they just cancel the tour and offer no other solution. Don't waste your time or your money with this company. It's not worth it. read more

So very thankful for JC and Chris! We brought our family of 7; we are all landlubbers and so out of our element on the water. One of us does not swim at all, so our guides JC and Chris were very patient with us. Chris gave our non-swimming family member an exclusive kayak tour which included an up close and personal visit with dolphins. He accompanied them while everybody else was snorkeling. Meanwhile, some of us are not very facile with a kayak, and they were patient with us as we weren't doing so great. Safety first is definitely there emphasis, and we are thankful to have seen some beautiful fish, with JC being an excellent guide, diving and pointing each one out for us. Took the Deluxe Kayak & Snorkel Kealakekua Bay Tour with Jay. Great guide. We had a small group yesterday, quickly got us into the kayak to paddle out to Captain Cook monument. Had a great time snorkeling and seeing ton's of fish. I accidentally flipped the kayak on the way out because I made a wrong turn. Jay had to swim out and help me back on the kayak in the middle of the cove. It's good to have a qualified guide that can handle situations like these. Had a great time! read more

We had a great kayak/snorkel tour with Jason & Christian. Jason was a good guide and knew a lot about the local marine life as well as plants in the area. When we arrived at the Captain Cook Monument he picked some tamarind off a tree for everyone in the group to try. It was a small thing, but added a fun touch to the tour. While snorkeling we saw a wide variety of fish species including yellow tang, parrotfish, triggerfish, and trumpetfish. We also had a group of 5 to 6 spinner dolphins blow by while we were in the water. The kayak adventure across the bay to the monument was relatively easy and quick. We appreciated getting to the snorkel spot early, well before all the other tours and especially before the large boats full of snorkelers arrived. The bay was really crowded when we headed back. Plus Adventures in Paradise beat the competitor's prices by almost half. Thanks again guys! read more

Awesome kayak snorkeling tour with Rabbit & Natasha in July. We were a party of 6 - ages 13-73 and we had a great time. A big thx to Rabbit & Natasha who helped my unsteady on his feet father in law enjoy this trip. TOTALLY WORTH GETTING UP EARLY for the 7am tour- we left Waikoloa Hilton 70 minutes ahead of time and it was perfect. You'll have the bay to yourselves for an hour before the masses of motor boats arrive. Lots of dolphins and a spectacular live coral reef. Quite possibly the best reef I have ever snorkeled. Rabbit and Natasha outfitted us all beforehand with gear (good quality) and a brief talk about how it all worked. We were with one other family of 4 so a small party of 12 including instructors. Great trip, great crew, knowledgeable & we felt very safe. Best experience of our 2week Hawaiian vacation. Did I mention yummy snacks too? The kayak bit was about 20-30 min each way and not super intense but you do have to paddle continuously during that time. We experienced no tip shakedown - simply a heads up at the start that if we wanted to tip they would be around for a bit after we returned back to shore. Cannot express enough how awesome this excursion was. Public bathrooms down the road were adequate - no bathrooms at the far end of the bay. Parking was VERY easy at 6:45 am - if doing the 11am give yourself 15 minutes just to wait for a parking space. read more

Nice guys, but poor decision-making to go out in the first place with a storm coming later that night led to an easy excursion designed for "5-75 year olds" becoming an unwelcomed and unexpected physical and mental challenge. Apparently, NOAA had forecast 6+ foot swells prior to a storm, coming in about the time we were supposed to return across the bay after visiting Captain Cook. There was apparently enough data so that another local kayaker (one who did not go out) said "I'm surprised you guys went out... it's supposed to be 6+ foot swells". Allowing the excursion to begin (when waters were calmer, but the wind had started to pick up) was the primary problem. Either the two dudes just didn't know, or knew and went out any way. Regardless, whoever made the decision to go out, made the wrong decision. Only because every kayak had at least one person with a combination of kayaking experience, physical strength, balance, motivation, and drive were we able to make it back to dock safely, capsizing 6+ times along the way between all of kayakers. read more

mike and patrick are fantastic!! they took care of us and the nature around us which is really all we could've asked for. i'm particularly grateful because we saw an entire family of dolphins swimming towards us and a sea turtle swimming below us! i would definitely recommend especially if you're trying to get to the captain cook monument. unless you're down for a difficult hike, this is a great way to get there! we saw a few kayaks on our way to the monument, but unless you have a permit you're not allowed to park your kayak on the land. would definitely recommend going with them for an easy snorkel experience!! Had a great kayak/snorkel tour to Captain Cook with Adventures in Paradise today. Full disclosure: we thought about just renting kayaks and snorkeling tethered to them -- as you are supposed to if you don't go with a sanctioned tour. But it sounded like a hassle, and after seeing people try it, I'm really glad we were able to join a tour. (Towing a kayak with other clowns doing the same thing in a crowded area? No thanks.) The website said there was only one spot available on the remaining days we had on the island, so I called and found that there was a cancellation, so we were in for the next day. (Word to the wise, book early.) JC and Miles were the dynamic duo of tour guides, both very helpful with getting us geared up and safely in and out of the boats and water, and knowledgeable about the history of the area and the reef itself. They pointed out interesting fish and coral while we were all floating around (not easy). They also gave us time to snorkel on our own afterwards, which was great. Special shoutout to Miles for the video of the sharks (young, presumably not scary?). I couldn't get down there to get a good look for myself, and I'm kinda glad I didn't. I think you are cray cray, but many thanks! Remember to tip your guides, folks! P.S. I saw a couple fish there that I had not seen elsewhere on the island. May be a scam, our trip was cancelled by text the night before it was scheduled to leave. I also received an email that it was cancelled. I left multiple voicemails regarding getting a refund of the money I had paid in advance for this trip. I was even so lucky to get someone on the phone once who said he was busy and would have to call me back. I never heard from him, and never got a call back from any of the messages I left. No refund to date, I have taken it up with my credit card company to dispute the charge. It would only take a minute to call me back and acknowledge that they will issue a refund. I would not recommend using this company. read more

Highlight of our big island experience. Mike (our guide) was very knowledgable about the history of the area and about the sea life in the bay. We took our family of 6 ranging in age from 5 - 17. The kayaking was good exercise, but manageable for all. The snorkeling is amazing along the bay. But if you can request Mike as your guide! My family and I had a great time snorkeling with Jeff and Jeff on 8/7/2017. Since we had a family of 6 we opted for the private rental. It did not disappoint at all. They were very personable and shared every ounce of knowledge. My mom and son did not snorkel but were still entertained with captain Jeff's stories. They were very attentive and made me feel fully at ease with my 13 year old neice and daughter snorkeling for the first time. On the way back we spotted plenty of spinner dolphins and had a look at the beautiful caves. I highly recommend this tour. read more

We have booked twice with them and it has been a wonderful experience, both 3 years ago and the first thing on our list for our return to the Big Island. "The early bird gets the worms" so to speak and one great advantage is they get you out to the Cook monument earlier than most operations to enjoy snorkeling and seeing the fish without having to dodge flailing limbs. Spinner dolphins swim in the bay as you kayak to the snorkeling area and jump-spin serenade you. Both times it has been a highlight of our trip! Guides are great! read more

We had a great trip! The kayaking was really fun and the guides were very helpful when we were getting in and out of the boats. This tour is great because you moor the boats instead of having to stay with them when snorkeling. Another benefit of this company is that they leave nice and early. We were on the water by 7:30 and arrived at the monument before the big boats came in so we had some peaceful snorkeling time. They defogged our masks with Naupaka leaves and offered snacks before we kayaked back. Highly recommended! read more

We had a really fun time on our kayak and snorkeling trip. Everything was well run and professional. The pace of the kayak trip across the bay was quick enough to move things along, but relaxed enough for beginners, and we had a lot of time to snorkel. Jason was our guide and he was great - you can tell that he definitely puts fun and safety as top priorities. Super nice guy and pretty chill, and direct about what the plan is. Not afraid to get after those who don't respect the land or who have their own agenda, and that's a very good thing. Make sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sandals. They gave great history of the area, gave great instruction on kayaking both to and from our destination, we got to see spinner dolphins on the way to snorkel and didn't rush us while we watched them(was so cool to see!), were helpful getting us in and our of the water (made sure we were safe), defogged our goggles, made sure we had enough water and snacks (very generous), just fun guys to hang with!! We had Mike and Kyle for our trip 5/24/16, 7am. I haven't done other tours, but for the price of about $100 this was absolutely wonderful. 5/5 would do again. Cousin and I shared a tandem kayak. She's had slightly more kayak experience than me, so it was kind of a circus show when we had to put me in the back to balance the weight out. We paddled in a literal circle for maybe 10-20 minutes to start, but Mike and Kyle were very patient about directing us when we lagged behind and or crashed into other kayaks by accident. We got to see a sizeable pod of spinner dolphins! I loved how knowledgeable Mike was in telling us about their habits. He also told fantastic and easy to understand stories about Hawaiian history and Captain Cook (so entertaining). We were a little behind a lot of the time because of inexperience in paddling, but I think he was actually constantly talking to the group at large about a lot. The snorkeling was beyond amazing. The reef was teeming with fish of every type. It was a little challenging compared to walking in off a beach because we had to slip off a rock pier, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I had a little difficulty adjusting the equipment to start, but again Mike and Kyle patiently explained how I should use it and offered to give me a different snorkel should it not work. There are SO many bugs on the Captain Cook monument landing though. Please bugspray and or wear longsleeves, or even up with about 6 new bites in a 10 minute walk. As an added bonus, you will probably run into the Lighthouse keeper's adorable pup, who likes taking hikes to meet the visitors and will happily curl up in the general area of your group for scratches. :) Public bathrooms were very adequate, and located in a peaceful grove of trees by the parking. Rinse off shower in the middle very clean and also adequate. After you're done cleaning up, the nearby opening to the bay is perfect for pictures! Access can be a little bumpy, considering you go all the way down a winding mountain road. No cell signal, so write down those instructions. read more

Our family of five took the kayak and snorkel tour and had a great time. Getting up at 6am for a 7am start seemed too early at first, but it turned out to be best as we missed all the crowds that showed up at around 11 in the large tour boats. Most of the time we had the monument practically to ourselves, which was really cool. The snorkeling was excellent, very clear and lots of marine life captured on the GoPro. On the way back we saw a pod of dolphins and a monk seal. The guides were very good and professional. It was one of our top experiences in Hawaii this trip. The only reason I am not giving these guys a 5 star is their unusual practice of collecting tips IN ADVANCE for a family of 5. I did not appreciate this aggressive shakedown, and I don't understand why all the other guests with smaller groups and spending less money were allowed to tip AFTER service. It was not like they offered a group discount or anything, just something they bury in the fine print of their contract. I probably would have tipped the same or more since the service was good, but the whole idea of advance mandatory tipping left a bad taste in my mouth for me. read more

Jeff was an excellent guide for our snorkeling trip. I was contacted just before the trip began to confirm the meeting location. Our small tour group of 5 made for a more intimate trip and Jeff was very helpful in making sure we were all enjoying ourselves. We had the most amazing experience! The tour was fantastic. The kayaking was kid-friendly, we saw dolphins and turtles from the kayaks.
