This place is a great value and great experience. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly, without being intrusive. The rooms are comfy and have all the comforts you'll need. I stayed in the Asia room. It was very comfortable for a three night stay. Each morning they offer a tasty and satisfying hot breakfast. It's a great way to start your day into Death Valley, or wherever you are headed. The place is full of Peacocks, rabbits, and goat named Esmeralda. See pictures attached. The location is about 30 minutes outside of death Valley. It's about 25 minutes away from a small town called Beatty. Beatty offers services like gas a few restaurants and a few convenience stores. Be careful when driving around town. There are free range donkeys that roam the streets. They're really cute, but they move it their own pace. The stars here are pretty amazing. I brought my telescope and was glad I did. But even without a telescope, it's worth taking a glass of wine out to the backyard and just gazing into that black sky and soaking in the stars. Pro tip hit up the dollar store in town for supplies. Don't forget to grab a lot of water For your day(s) in Death Valley. Bonus pro tip - wake up early and catch the sunrise in the backyard. read more

My family and I will never go back. This place has some serious problems, floors were so dirty, no plugs work, no TV, no ice, beds were so uncomfortable, no hot tub. The picture on the website are soo miss leading, we were excited at first but then it just kept getting worse and worse as we pulled up. Absolutely NO customer service here! If u ask for something get ready for the attitude that will fallow from the lady at the front desk. The kitchen is a horrible experience they will yell at you if you grab food . They will yell " we have other guest u know." Like scream it, I don't see anywhere that says one plate per person. If its busy and need to bring the food to your room they will absolute flip out. I wish I was kidding. I have a bad back so I needed to go eat in my room didn't think it was going to be such a shit show. This place smells as bad as it can get as well. The pool was the only good part but its in a huge green house so its very hot and humid in there so it wasn't to relaxing. So yeah if u want to just throw your money away and enjoy nothing come to this place. You will absolutely leave disappointed. Everything was 5 stars. The hostess/owner is the nicest person and the service was impeccable. The room (Victorian suite) was adorable. The pool was the perfect place to watch the sunset. I need to start by saying we didn't end up staying at the Shady Lady Bed and Breakfast because we cancelled our trip but I still thought my pre-stay experience is noteworthy for other travelers.It started off fine after making a reservation online (through a third party booking site), the innkeeper, Nigel seemed pleasant and accommodating then, even agreeing to let me upgrade the room type from standard to private cabin and pay the difference on site on arrival.But when I needed to cancel, the experience turned from pleasant to unreceptive to outright rude. I just needed an email confirming that I canceled this reservation for travel insurance purposes and called to ask him if he would send that email to me. He agreed and took my information. I waited 24 hours to follow up when I hadn't received that email and to email him the next day, to make it easy for him to just respond to the email (something like yes this reservation has been cancelled would have worked fine for me, but after not getting an email response the next day, I called back to ask verbally again. He was extremely agitated right off the bat immediately after picking up the phone, recognizing my voice from previous calls, and sounded so irritated when I asked if he could respond to my email or send one out and he yelled "Look, I sent out the email yesterday. If you didn't get it, I don't know what to tell you. I've spent enough of my time on your reservation in the first place!" AND HUNG UP ON METhat was that. I don't understand how someone in the hospitality industry could act so hostily. l had plans to return there after canceling, but now I have no such intention just based on that experience (I guess I'll have to assume he feels the same about me). And think other travelers may want to be aware of this. read more

I've travelled all over the country and this is probably my favorite place I e stayed. The owners go out of their way to be kind. They watched my aging dog while I carried my things in. They served a delicious breakfast. The rooms were very clean and each is decorated differently. I called to make a reservation. It, my calls kept dropping. She left me a message saying - please just be safe. I've got a room saved for you and I'll see you soon. Who does that? It's fun and different and I almost didn't want to leave. Love this hotel! This is a very unique place that resides about 1.5 hour from Death Valley. It's not so close and not so convenient if you are doing multi-day Death Valley. However, it works out great for a one night stay transitioning from Death Valley to Zion. The hotel owners Jennifer and Nigel are the nicest people I've met. I felt like I was visiting relatives the whole time I stayed on the property. The cabin where we stayed faced a beautiful Mountain View. Sunrise view is absolutely gorgeous and you can just view it from your bed. The property also has many peacocks. They were very entertaining and beautiful. Star gazing at night was amazing! There's also an outdoor hot tub and a pool. The pool was not in operation when we were there, but it probably would if we come closer to the summer. The owners also served great sit down breakfast in the morning. Overall, I had a great experience and would stay there again if we ever go to Death Valley. read more

Paul was very nice to us and accommodating. Made us feel very welcome. It is in the middle of nowhere which is great for having a quiet environment. It's also behind Area 51 apparently. You can also see the stars there since there is not much light pollution there. They also have a lot of peacocks and I was pleasantly surprised that they were actually quite calm. But if you are looking for an escape, a place to get away from it all, a place to decompress and just relax, look no further. The owner, Jennifer, has taken this old brothel, and made it into a comfy, charming B&B while maintaining some interesting artifacts from it's past. Find a cozy corner to enjoy a book, visit with other guests, explore the facility & discover how the girls of the house lived it's up to you. So, I wasn't aware this place used to be a famous " Shady Lady Ranch" back in the days on Nevada history. If you haven't heard of it, google it! I booked it via Expedia simply because the rate is reasonable (around $50 with $35 property fee and $7 tax) compared to other nearby Death Valley motels or hotels (Pahrump). I didn't check the map, what I didn't realize was, it's about 32 miles from the town center of Beatty. When you were on the road for good 7-8 hours, 30 mins was like 2 hours while everyone else seem driving 90 mph on HWY 95 in the pitch dark. There's no other light around but you can't miss the bright yellow "Shady Lady Bed and Breakfast" sign right next to the 95, the property is literally in the middle of nowhere:P Upon arrival, guess it's still early, perhaps around 7:30pm that most guests haven't arrived. The host, Jennifer, saw me approaching and was already waiting at the porch. Check in was fast, no ID, no key, I was early so as for the "Standard room", I had options between 2 twin beds with attached bathroom or queen bed with bathroom down the hall. Of course I picked the one with bathroom. Jennifer was super friendly, we had a brief chat and she even helped me carry up my luggage. I bumped into the other guests' dog so I assume it's pet friendly properties with couple other dogs laying in the living room or walking around. She asked if I am legal to drink and said she would offer me a glass of wine, or beer, I told her maybe later, I was tired. I got the "Standard Room" so nothing fancy like the Cabin or The Asian Room. The room is small in size, no TV, comes with a chair, nightstand and a shelves unit with a closet sit some stuff like someone else's room. WiFi worked well. I have my iPad to play music or movie so I really don't care if there's TV. The bed is ok, too soft for my like but I am also accustomed with hotel/motel standard so it's a bit like "sleeping at someone's house" feel to me. I didn't get out the room until next morning after 10, of course I missed breakfast. Jennifer said they were starting to worry about me...that's because she didn't know I am such a sleepyhead: P If you enjoy human interaction, like to feel like home when on a trip away from home, enjoy walking into the kitchen with pajama to ask for a cup of coffee, this is a place for you! #check out Beatty Museum Historical Society when you are in town. It's small but has decent collections. #Rhyolite Ghost Town and Open Air Museum are about 37 miles away are also consider a must visit when you are in town. read more

Jennifer & Nigel did not disappoint- they are amazing hosts! They provided us dinner recommendations, which set perfect expectations. The first thing you need to understand to understand the Shady Lady is that rural Nevada is seriously weird AND seriously rural. If you understand that then you might fully appreciate then awesomeness that is the Shady Lady. The Shady Lady started its storied career as a brothel. It retains the kitschy charm with its themed rooms. The real star isn't the rooms or the breakfast (which was always very good!); it's the proprietors Nigel and Jennifer. Nigel is always ready with advice on what to visit, lots of maps, and a scenic route. Jennifer was the soul of kindness and very generous in offering a glass of wine after a long day visiting Death Valley. This is not a posh B&B. It's feels much more like staying with a quirky relative. I especially liked how they made sure their guests met one another. It wasn't unusual to hear someone yell "SHADY LADY!" at the park and see one of your shady fellow guests. A huge caveat here is that it's 30 miles from ANYTHING. However, everything is 30 miles from anything in this part of NV. Plan meals accordingly--Beatty is the closest place to eat and just north is the historic little town of Goldfield (with the car forest--worth a stop!). If you're looking for an upscale experience this is not it. If you're looking for something charming, unusual, warm and friendly do give the Shady Lady a try. read more

In the middle of nowhere.... Driving on US 95, around 30 miles north of Beatty, NV an oasis appears on the right. Some trees, a sign a white picket fence.... You have arrived. The owners are very friendly and even calmed my nervous 13 year old son (nervous about being so isolated not far from Area 51), the rooms are simple and very comfortable. We were greeted warmly, as if visiting relatives we had not seen for a while. It is quiet, except for the occasional call of one of the many peacocks living there. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom neat and clean. A welcome drink was a nice plus. In the morning we had a good breakfast to start the day. It was worth the extra 30 minutes from Beatty to get here. If you want peace and quiet among good people, make that drive. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Shady Lady for two days and couldn't have asked for a better experience! The people who run this place (Jennifer & Nigel) are incredibly kind and accommodating. When they stay they're pet friendly, they are pet LOVING. They showed my fearful dog so much love and welcomed him with open arms and tons of treats. The breakfast was always delicious and they work around your schedule. You can use their kitchen if you want to make your own/warm up food. On our last night we had some drinks with Jennifer & Nigel and ended up talking for a couple hours! Nigel is super knowledgeable with the surrounding areas and can help you plan your travel. Everything was super clean and COVID safe. If you're looking for a unique place to stay near Death Valley, this is it! You'll have a little extra driving to do but it wasn't too far for us. Unless you want to stay inside the park near the dunes, you won't find anything too much closer and as accommodating outside of the park. Beatty also has several yummy restaurants for dinner options. We enjoyed our stay at the Shady Lady. While we had booked a room, we ended up being upgraded to a small cabin-type accommodation, which was so nicely decorated and convenient with our dog because we could walk right outside. There was no TV, but the wifi worked well, and we also had a full kitchen with dining area. The only thing that wasn't ideal is the bathroom only has a curtain, not a door, so not full privacy. When we checked in, we were asked to choose our breakfast time and we were able to let the owner know of any dietary restrictions at that time. We weren't given a key to our lodging; luckily we weren't planning to go anywhere at that point, but I did feel a little weird about that. Of course, you can lock it from the inside while you're there. The B&B is about 30-45 minutes from any gas, food, etc. so be sure to fill up in Beatty if you're coming from that direction. You'll also want to bring some kind of dinner with you unless you want to drive back to Beatty or 30 minutes to another town. The benefit of this is the incredible sky and stars you can see. The views during the day are really scenic as well. The breakfast the next morning was served in the main house, and it wasn't anything special (scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, fruit), but it was served with care and we got to meet some other guests there and discuss our travel plans. My daughter and I did spring break at Death Valley and stayed at the Shady Lady, an hour's drive away from DV and 30 minutes from Beatty which had 24 hr gas station and a wonderful Dollar Store. Very reasonable rates and great reviews. Well worth it! It is unique, interesting, and enjoyable. They greeted us from the front porch each evening we came home/back no matter how late. We knew if something happened to us on our hikes,.... Jen and Nigel would let authorities know! The stars outside were amazing. There were peacocks and a goat. The drive to/from DV was beautiful and awe-inspiring and easy. It was nice eating breakfast with the other guests and getting tips for our travel, too! read more

First, Nigel and Jennifer are amazing hosts! They go out of their way to accommodate their guests needs. We stayed in the beautiful cabin and when we arrived back one night after dark they had the outside lights and inside lights on for us! There are over 30 peacocks roaming around and two of them sat on our cabin roof all night as if they were guarding us. The dark skies provided an opportunity to see the magnificent stars! My family and I recently took a Nevada Ghost town trip starting in Las Vegas, heading to Virginia City and turning around to come back... meanwhile stopping at all of the small mining towns in the middle. This BnB, which has kept the name of the brothel that used to run there (legally) provides a fun concept that will make a Death Valley trip all that more unique. Despite the food service, the breakfasts were nice. As rad as it is to establish a BnB in a former brothel, if a guest didn't read up on the story behind the place, one would be none the wiser about its unique history. The couple who owns and runs the BnB really could afford to lean into the fact that the property used to be a brothel. That fact alone is far from the reason for my review. The couple, as lovely as they are in conversation, really do not know how to treat guest. The biggest problem dealt with meals. My girlfriend and I stayed at the property for two nights, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and that night. A Christmas dinner was provided, which was a nice touch. The owners gave us a time to be back. Two hours prior to the established dinnertime, when we realized we wouldn't be able to make it in time, I called to see if they could hold some leftovers. I was informed that the dinner had been moved forward an hour and that I should find a place to eat on my one. In the middle of nowhere. During a pandemic with restaurant closure orders. We arrived without finding an open restaurant and all the guests were in the middle of dinner--they hadn't even finished and gotten onto desert. It was obvious that dinner had not started at the re-established time. The couple focused their attention on the other guests, not asking anything about if we had been able to find food on my own. The shoulder was so cold it felt awkward to ask to join. That evening, I asked what the earliest breakfast I could get because we wanted to explore Death Valley some more. The owners stated 7:30 and asked if that was early enough for us. I stated I would prefer 7 but that we could make 7:30 work. Generously, the owners offered breakfast at 7. Come 6:57 the next morning, my girlfriend and I went to the dining room and sat down. Another couple staying at the BnB was loitering around and the owner was hounding them about breakfast. Not really interested, the other couple vacillated but ultimately took breakfast at the main table. I asked when my girlfriend and I would be getting our breakfast. While a second breakfast came out by 7:15, the fact stands that breakfast had been given away (to another couple that didn't even want it!) and we were placed at the secondary table that was chock full of detritus. It was a horrible way to end a stay. After leaving, I received a voicemail. We had left a charging cable in the room. It took me a few days to return the call but I spoke with Nigel and he said he could send it. I gave him my address and asked if I should reimburse. Surprisingly, he said I should. Whatever. That's not a problem in and of itself--after all, they weren't responsible for left property. But a month later, I haven't received the cable. The place could be amazing. The owners are so personable. But their inability to treat my girlfriend and me well soured the experience. read more

We stayed here to break up our 1400 mile trip. We were greeted on the walkway by the owner and shown our room. She and her husband were very kind and helpful. Our room was beautiful and very comfortable! It was a real treat to just sit and visit with each other, and have a real rest. The history is very interesting and was shared by the owners. Highly recommend this unique B&B! It has a lot of character owing to its, um, shady past (but don't worry -- all the mattresses and sheets have been changed), a nice contrast to the Beatty motels. The themed rooms and overall decor are fun, and there are lots of peacocks that wander the grounds. There's also a pool, but it was too chilly for us to swim, since Beatty is deceptively cooler than the nearby Death Valley due to its higher altitude. The possible downside to this B&B is its location, especially while Scotty's Castle Road is closed. It's about half an hour outside of Beatty proper, which makes the drive back and forth from Death Valley a bit long. Some of the guests we encountered were using it as a stop for the night en route to their next destination after Death Valley, but we were happy to stay for a few nights. Paul is a fantastic host! He's really friendly and is dedicated to making sure his guests have a great stay. He asked us each day if we had any preferences for breakfasts, and we went with his suggestions and loved all of it! read more

Our truck broke down coming from California right down the road from here so we decided to call it a night and find a place to stay. The innkeepers were so friendly and very accommodating towards us and our 3 big dogs and 2 cats, they gave us the big suite just so they could run outside and play in the field. They did however warn us about coyotes that come around and made sure we had all of our animals inside before dark. They served us breakfast and even brought us some of our animals some food since we were stuck away from a store for miles since our truck wouldn't drive very far and we didn't want to chance it until we found a mechanic. We only stayed one night but they told us they would help us if we needed to stay longer. The history of the place was awesome and the scenery was beautiful especially at sunrise and sunset. If we're ever in this area again we're definitely going to be back even if we don't spend the night, we're going to stop by and check in with these fine people! The Shady Lady B&B was well worth the drive. The staff and setting were unique and inviting. Our room, Paradise, was well configured with air conditioning and an immersive, heart shaped, jacuzzi tub. The ambience was enhanced with the gorgeous peacocks strolling the grounds. Not to mention their cheerful sounds. We immediately felt comfortable and settled in to our pleasant room. My son and I were traveling from Texas from his last Air Force deployment and decided to go through Death Valley. We were a bit hesitant to stop, based on the yelp reviews, but decided to give it a chance based on TripAdvisor. We called ahead, which I would highly recommend due to its remote location. My son inquired about a Military discount and was generously offered a nearly 30% discount. The owner Jennifer, inquired whether we would like to join them for dinner for a small added fee, of which we accepted. We stayed in the "Cabin" which is down a small path from the main building. Apparently, Jennifer and Nigel are the new owners who have recently taken over. The cabin was great, both clean and comfortable, and well appointed. Dinner was spaghetti, salad and garlic bread, which was very good, and after we ate our fill, Jennifer loaded us up with plates to take back to our room. The views from the cabin were amazing, and we had a great nights sleep. Take note, there was no TV in the cabin, but they have WiFi and we also had Verizon 4G service, which isn't a given in the Nevada desert. Breakfast the next morning was basic and good, and we chatted with some of the other guests, and got some great travel tips for Death Valley. Staying at the Shady Lady might not be for some, who are looking for the "cookie-cutter" hotel experience, but we had a great time, and we left feeling more like family than guests. Breakfast is definitely the best I have had in a B&B. There is a lovely "cabin" (way nicer than any cabin I have been in) that accepts dogs. 19 peacocks, lots of birds, dogs and cats complete the genuine country atmosphere of this place. It's not really closed. My fiancé and I just drove four hours after booking a room with them on Airbnb and couldn't find it so we called the place which a (seemingly drunk) man answered the phone and said "oh I don't usually check my emails and I don't know how to work Airbnb. I put someone else in that room from Spain. Sorry I'll just put you in the cabin I gotta clean it first though." I even had to ask him if he was drunk because he was slurring his words. No thanks.
