Goldfield Historical Marker 12 [Goldfield NV] We have been stopping by this old hotel in Goldfield NV since 2013 either on our way to or back from Las Vegas. Our last stop was our 5th time during the Labor Day weekend 2024. One memorable visit was a stop we made over 6 years ago in July 2018... we arrived in Goldfield around 9:00p, not too terribly late. We passed by a patrol car parked nearby, we parked on the side of the hotel and peeked inside. It was well lit inside and there were some tools as if renovations were being made. Outside I heard voices, two men having a conversation. I couldn't make out what they were saying but there were two voices of men that was very audible and seems nearby... I didn't see anybody. My hubby who was a few yards away from me began walking towards the street towards the front of the hotel (I wondered where he was going). After he came back we both head towards our car and left. I asked him where he went and he said he heard voices and he tried to see where it came from. Now neither one of us mentioned to each other about voices... I looked at him and told him I heard the same thing but the voices were closer to me. He said no, it was towards the front of the hotel on the main Street. We both got creeped out. As of May 1, 2024 tours are being offered by appointment only. 2 person minimum. The flyer gave plenty of details: Children under 5 FREE Ages 6-10 - $15 Age 11 and up - $25 Non refundable. Cash preferred. Does not include investigation prices Since our first time seeing it in 2013 they have been trying to revive the hotel. It has been through a series of changing hands between owners and every time we pass by no construction company seem to want to take the job. It is one of the "Scariest Places on Earth" (hmm, I thought it was the Clown Motel or the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah)... anyway, it captured paranormal pros from all over, including Zak Bagans' Ghost Adventures crew who visits regularly. Yes, I am one of those people that are intrigued by old buildings that have a plethora of historical noteworthy events. Even more if it is supposedly haunted. Came here on an early saturday afternoon, May 2nd 2020. The building itself is under major renovation so it's locked out to the public. The best you can do walk around half of the building that is adjacent to the street and put your face up against the windows to peer inside. Of course I took several pictures hoping that I would catch an apparition or two but maybe they were night ghosts and were sleeping at the moment? Looked up the history of this place and found out that construction started in 1907 and was finished in 1908. Since there was a cemetery right next to it, the townsfolk decided to move the cemetery to another location about a mile away. When this 4 story, 150 room hotel held its grand opening it was rumored that they had champagne literally streaming down the red carpeted front steps of the main entrance. At that time this hotel was considered high luxury due to it having electricity for lighting and gas lines for a furnace to keep the place warm during the winter. It also boasted several nice crystal chandeliers in the lobby, an elevator(which was not modern at the time) and each room having it's own bathroom(back then most hotels shared bathrooms). As for the paranormal activity portion of it, the popular tv show "Ghost Adventures" performed their paranormal investigations 4 times here. Significantly, one of the episodes features a brick flying across the room on it's own. Probably the most famous ghost here is woman named Elizabeth. She was a prostitute that had constant sexual relations with the then owner George Wingfield. Eventually Elizabeth became pregnant. Since George was married he didnt want this scandal to reach the public so he chained Elizabeth to a radiator in room 109. He kept her alive long enough for the baby to be born. What happened next is still a mystery. People say Elizabeth died at child birth. Others say George murdered her. As for the baby, it was rumored that George threw the baby down one of the mine shafts located just below the hotel. Nowadays, people report seeing an apparition in the form of young looking lady in an early 1900's dress. That is no do doubt Elizabeth probably looking for her baby. Also people have reported hearing a baby crying right around the main lobby. Other ghost stories are people seeing a man walking around on the top of the roof which was probably the guy who committed suicide by jumping off the roof. Another is the smell of cigar smoke floating around on the first floor. This is probably from George Wingfield himself, because he loved to smoke cigars. In closing, I was a bit disappointed I couldnt go inside. After some research, I found out that you can call to make an appointment to tour the place for a fee. There is also a group paranormal tour at night you can book as well. Im thinking maybe if I can convince a handful of people we could go do that group paranormal thing. It's not gonna be cheap though. I read it costs 500 bucks to book and then it's 40 bucks per person that shows up. The price alone scares me already. Lol. Yelp 2020 Review #37 833 overall read more

This hotel is currently not open to the public. There is still a lot of renovations going on. There was a sign in the window showing that they did hold an event there last Halloween due to the rumors that the hotel is haunted A quick Google search can bring up the many haunted tales from the hotel which includes one about construction workers leaving the job due to a floating brick that was caught in a photograph. This is my second time being back to visit just the outside of the hotel. The first time was over 10yrs ago and it was late at night. The building at night was very intimidating and super spooky. This time we visited during the day and it wasn't as spooky but still very fun. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars only because I wasn't able to visit inside. I will be sure to keep an eye out for any events where I'm given the chance to enter though. read more

This is really an historical building. Built in the heady days when Goldfield was the largest city in Nevada with a peak population of 20,000. The hotel was outfitted with fine imported marble, expensive wood moldings and trim, and some of the modern conveniences of the day. I was on a bus trip with Jim Marsh, a Las Vegas car dealer, who has given a fair amount of money to help restore the hotel. Because of his tour, the normally closed hotel was opened for our group and we were given a tour. The woman who has been the caretaker for a number of years has appeared on several TV shows about the hotel being haunted. She has stopped making the appearances because every time she did go on TV, the hotel suffered break ins from ghost hunters. She told us about the history of the hotel and then we were free to wander around and go to the second story. The owner of the hotel had spent a fair amount of money to renovate it. There is a lot of new wallboard, electrical wiring, and new bathroom fixtures. We were told the owner ran out of money and so it sits in need of further money for restoration which seems unlikely. Across the street from the hotel is the Esmeralda County Courthouse built in 1907 and the site of the 1906 Nelson - Gans boxing match that went 42 rounds. The hotel is certainly worth a look through the windows stop if you're in Goldfield, but it wouldn't be a destination in and of itself. read more

No - this place isn't open. No - it's not haunted. Yes - it's dusty and dirty and old. You'd think the town of Goldfield is a living Stephen King novel. The only time I've seen a soul here was when 2 fat guys were sitting at an old gas station like it was the town hangout, waiting for cars to drive by. The Goldfield Hotel has a new owner, and is now open for Paranormal Investigations again. No overnights, just four hours. Started out $100 per person, now has gone up to $200 per person to investigate. Last week there were seven of us, all experienced paranormal investigators, who investigated the hotel. Five of us had been there before. The tour guide, Heather, insisted on giving us a tour of the place, although no one wanted it. It took 53 minutes. Which left us 3 hours to investigate. We were not happy. This is not going to go over well in the paranormal community, and they are going to lose a lot of business. read more

Why five stars for an abandoned old hotel? Because this place is cool as hell! Opened in 1908, when the town of Goldfield was thriving due to gold mines, the hotel was the centerpiece of town! With chefs from Europe, the towns only elevator, and 154 rooms to offer the rich gold mongers! But the town of 35,000 had dwindled to 1,500 and in the mid 1940's the hotel closed. Reportedly haunted now, and it's been on the ghost hunters type shows, you can tell the luxury it once offered by looking through the windows! It's a step back in time to the days of the Old West and a hotel full of gold miners, ladies of the night, and gambling! Worth your drive from Vegas to see this old hotel. read more

You can't rate this for users -- it's locked up and hasn't been open since the 1950's. It's been featured as "Haunted" by various TV shows in the last couple of years..... My grandma lived in Goldfield in the late 1960's and 1970's, and she used to take me by this motel when we went "up to town" and I'd look in the windows. Everything was dusty and destroyed..... It's still there from what I understand, and probably worth a glance through the windows. I hear that the cemetery is interseting, and there is an old bar down one of the side streets that still operates and has photos from a great "FIGHT" that was put together for the miners in the early 1900's..... I'm planning on visiting this winter, and I'll be trying to find the old stamp mill that used to be there, and the old miner's camps around it, and I'm definately going to check out the cemetery and see if I can find my grandma's old boyfriend's grave -- Kirby, an old miner. She was so proud of his grave stone..... it had a burro and a gold pan and a pickax on it..... I don't remember the guy's last name, but maybe this will be enough for me to track it down! If anyone else happens to go through this old ghost town, let me know if you find Kirby's grave, okay? read more

I passed by in Nov 2016, took a pic of the old weird cars by the Hwy in the back of the hotel...when I got home to Oregon, in the window of the hotel was a ghost! Amazing! I only saw it when I zoomed in the picture. read more

I've come to this Hotel about 3 times in the last 7 years it's looking more run down than it did a few years ago. So sad they really need to open this place up for ghost tours. Years ago I was told by an older lady that they were going to reopen but obviously it hasn't. read more

Goldfield is about halfway from Las Vegas and halfway from Reno, in the middle of nowhere. Its about 30 miles from Tonopah which is where Goldfield residents go for real shopping and the only real supermarket around. An acquaintance of mine, Lester O'Shea was the last real owner of the Goldfield Hotel. Lester was the chairman of the San Francisco Republic party central committee and went overboard when he bought that hotel to restore it. As you approach it from the south, its a large black site on the horizon and as you get closer and closer you see this time honored building in the middle of the desert. Its empty, if you look in the windows you will see air conditioning ducts and outside has very expensive fire protection systems for the entire building. Thankfully its across the street from the courthouse and this probably prevents real vandalism. There are people living in Goldfield, I talked to a woman who drove up in a cadillac with her 2 dogs and lived in a clean, neat cottage. The residents love Goldfield for their own reasons. Shopping is non existent except for a bar or two and a grocery store. They drive to Tonopah for services and goods and Tonopah is limited in population. If you get a chance, stop, spend a few dollars in town, walk around, remember that this was a big city at one time, with rail traffic to Truckee across the desert floor, try to find Candelaria, now non existent, and think of rail traffic going to Sacramento and bringing back crabs and oysters from the bay to Goldfield. Its shows on old restaurant menus. Overhead look for jets passing over as Goldfield/Tonopah are on the flight path for planes coming from the east coast. Enjoy Nevada history at its best. read more

Passing threw with the hubby and decided to stop by here and check it out since hubby said it's suppose to be haunted and I love haunted places, so decided to check it out even though you can't get into the place but the lady that has the keys only lives a block away and will let you in her name is Virginia Ridgeway she is 82 years old. Anyways as we were checking out the outside of it, it was really errie and creepy as I looked threw the hole in the front door as soon as I did my Chest instantly felt pressure and started hurting. That's when we decided to leave. But all in together I def believe this hotel is haunted. Def a scary place if your into it! Def WORTH a trip out! Between Vegas and Reno. read more

It's fun reading the reviews here as it brings back fond memories. Goldfield is definitely an awesome ghost town and the hotel is it's crown jewel. I was there a couple times in the very early 70's and its appearance is unchanged from today. One time we got a tour from the current owner, a lady named Shirley. We were limited to the lobby area. I bought a small book she was selling called "You can't leave Shirley" all about the ghost experiences there. True or not, hair raising reading. read more

Sadly, I didn't read Nancy's review before visiting Goldfield, NV, or I definitely would have looked up Kirby's grave...because the graveyard is FASCINATING. As you might guess, this review is about the graveyard and not about the sadly-closed Goldfield Hotel. If you're driving south on 95, the graveyard will be on your right hand side right before you drive into 'town'. Very worth checking out - the tombstones tell of a fascinating history of gold mining and hard living. There are a couple of 'unknown man' graves in contrast to the very ornate tombstones, and everything in between. If you've seen 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,' you'll get an idea of what this graveyard is like. Go pay your respects to the dearly departed of Goldfield - it's like a trip back in time. read more

Lovely old building. My Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather were one of the owners of the Goldfield hotel in the 30's, John and Mettie Jones. My Great Grandfather stood behind the lovely bar for many years and my Mother told great stories of her visits to stay with her Grandparents in the 30's, and about the characters who lived in, and took their meals in the hotel. My Grandfather passed away in Goldfield and is buried in the Masonic Section in Goldfield. read more

We've driven by here numerous times, and have stopped to peak in thru the supposedly haunted windows. It does look spooky inside, although anything in the middle of the night in this dead town would seem spooky with no one around. Even in the day, I've never seen a human being alive in this town. Goldfield hotel was a awesome place to go if you are a ghost hunter. I have pictures of a huge orb and also a women in a window. Also the ghost like to throw rocks at you and make lots of noise. The down fall is you can go inside because these ghost are very dangerous and evil. You can watch on Ghost adventures best Halloween. You don't have to pay to see fake go see the real thing. It closed down in 2002 for tours because people were getting hurt. I have lots of pictures of the ghost also one that was messing with my camera how the hotel burnt down. This town has got to be the creepiest town I have ever driven through. It is small but filled with wooden shacks and trailers and small homes. It's Like a ghost town however there are people living in goldfield. I have heard people say that you never see anyone ever walking the streets or even come out of their homes and that there are parked cars everywhere. It is so true! When we drove through, during night this last Friday, we saw a lit up Xmas tree in someone's house. It's just so weird. I took pics of hotel. And there is a electronic cross on steps of hotel. Goldfield has many unique sights. A very eerie feel and look, everywhere you go. I couldn't get enough of it! The old High School is incredible! Stayed at the Santa Fe Hotel and it was very nice and clean for such a dusty town. Didn't find many RV hookups that were on however so come prepared! Bring lots of water and solar chargers for power if you have an RV or truck. The closest gas station is about 30 miles away so be careful driving around town! I was in Goldfield NV one day last week, drove there from Las Vegas to check it out. Big fan of old buildings, HATE all the junk and the mobil homes and compers converted to mobil homes. Also for being the first week of June, it was pretty cold the day we were there. Nothing was open, appeated a couple of places were still in business but not open the day we were there. This town has a huge potential if it can get its act together. Can understand why noone is renovating the buildings because of the surrounding area read more
