A tailor that doesn't see the value in mending a customer relationship…read more.. B & G Alterations in Midland off Ashman Street is one small room with one sullen seamstress named Pat. I had a sewing project for her that I imagine tailors do on a regular basis... replace a zipper. Just a pair of cotton shorts... no quasi Justin Bieber leather costume. Pat said my shorts would be done in a week. She seemed relieved that she had a zipper in the right color. When I picked the shorts up, I noticed she used a heavy-duty zipper for my light cotton shorts. The chunky teeth on one side were sewn curved into the side seam, rather than simply ending straight at the top... the curve of the zipper was so pronounced that it forced the front of my shorts open. I asked Pat why she chose to sew the zipper so that the teeth on one side arched into the seam. She said that's how the previous zipper was put in. I ignored her white lie and explained to her how I'd like the zipper to be sewn in... just like any other pair of shorts; flat at the top, teeth ending straight to the top. She said she thought she was doing me a favor by using a heavy-duty zipper and she had to do it that way with that zipper. Later on in the conversation she stated it was the only zipper she had in the right color (truth should not be that difficult to share). There were no apologies. No, "let me make it right". Nothing. She seemed annoyed that she would have to get a different zipper. Going on two weeks, I left her a message to ask when my shorts would be ready. When she didn't call me back after two days, I called again. She said she didn't know when the zippers would come in... they were on back order. I'm sensing another white lie. I told her I wanted my shorts and money back. She said that was fine but she would then have to take the (heavy-duty) zipper back out. I must admit, I don't know how much it costs for a zipper, but Pat sure values them like gold. Maybe next time she'll see the value of a customer.

I was extremely disappointed with my experience and the results I had. I had asked Cheryl to turn…read moremy wedding dress into a corset top with a sweetheart neckline. She said that she could do it, so I trusted her expertise--in fact, the first fitting she kept going on and on about how experienced she was and that she could charge higher prices because she was very good at what she does. I got my dress back and I cannot wear it to my wedding. The corset top is not flattering at all--it gouges my skin out, falls down, and overall looks very awkward and not how a corset top should look. The sweetheart neckline folds over, showing the lining in the dress. It looks very unprofessional and bad. When I told Cheryl that I was not happy with the dress, she said that she didn't think there was much else that she could do and she basically blamed me for wanting something that she wasn't able to do with her skillset. I told her that she shouldn't have taken my money and told me that she could do it then when I first told her what I wanted. I then asked for a refund and she refused. After four hours of back and forth texting in which Cheryl was pretty rude, she only refunded me $100--not even half of what I paid, even though the dress is unwearable--not to mention in worse condition then when I gave it to her. I am very disappointed with the results and would not recommend Cheryl's Alterations to anyone due to this experience.

After our washing machine broke, the laundry started piling up. So one morning I brought it down to…read moreLaundryland. Unfortunately, Laundryland was closed. I hadn't realized how early it was. I peered through the front window and saw all the washing machines had their lids up and the doors to the dryers hung open. There was no one inside. I got back into the truck and waited for someone to come. I've always thought doing laundry at a coin-op was fun. When I was growing up, my grandmother didn't have a washing machine in her apartment so we went to the place on the corner. It smelled like manufactured clouds. There was a chicken restaurant next door so the second you stepped outside, your clothes got coated in that smell. Ad there were wing bones all over the street. It was around eight when a woman finally unlocked the door at Laundryland. I brought in three trash bags and stuffed everything into the quad loaders, which were $6 a cycle. After I sat down to read the newspaper, a man came in holding two duffel bags. He put his stuff into the washing machine and I could see blood on some of it. I pretended not to see. But after a few minutes I put down the newspaper and walked outside. It turned out the blood was from a deer. There was an enormous buck on his truck's flatbed. It had blood near its throat and its eyes were black. I pictured the blood coming off his clothes in the rinse and washing through the pipes. After a little while, I went back in to switch my laundry. One of the dryers was out of service. There was a handwritten sign on another that said, "Don't slam the door." I looked over to where the stranger was doing his laundry. It seemed very early in the morning to shoot a deer. I noticed he had taken my newspaper. There is a lot of space in Laundryland so when my clothes were dry I folded them in a separate area. Eventually I discovered that there were field mice in our washing machine and that's what was causing the problem. They'd gotten stuck in the motor's belt drive.
