There is a mix of tent and trailer sites. Some of the sites are small and some are absolutely HUGE, about half the sites have water, however there is no electricity or sewage dump. We camped in site #2 which was a 70ft pull through, however I wouldn't recommend anyone pulling anything larger than say 34ft as some of the corners would be hard to make. The rates were $10 first night and $5 each night thereafter at the time we stayed here in the summer of 2010. We highly recommend this park, it's very beautiful, our only wish is that it was farther from the highway as you can here the traffic going by, otherwise great!

You just insert your payment in the box and move on with your life. It's $10 the first night and $5 thereafter. Extra vehicle fees are $5 which each campsite has one included. Bathrooms are clean and there is flat ground to pitch a tent. There are cold water spickets. There are a couple of trails but otherwise the most entertainment you'll find is away from the park. Another reviewer said the road traffic was loud, but it never bothered us once. There's so few cars on Hwy 19, and this was a busy weekend. Still didn't hear much. There is firewood for $5 an armload and it's also the honest John system. Call for reservations if you have a group or just show up first come first serve. Definitely worth it for a trip to Fossil or the Painted Hills when you have nothing to do during the day.

Sites are all paved on a hill overlooking the lake. All have fire pits, picnic tables and a water pump nearby. One closer to the entrance could hookup to a hose. In between the loop of camps is a nice shaded grassy area. The bathrooms are coded, warm and clean with two hot water showers and a hand dryer by the sinks. The lake was very quiet no one on it but could be used for boating. It has a strong odor like urine that carries up to the camp. Probably not a swimming lake. The highway is very close so you do hear road traffic all night. It is not a secure campground and people come in late at night and leave early.

We then proceeded to call the county parks office to get a spot that wasn't taken, she gave us no other option than a spot right next to the bathroom and in between the walking paths. Then we were given an invalid code to the bathroom. The camp host shows up and doesn't even acknowledge us. We found out she was the chick laying right in front of us at spot 30 saying she doesn't know who the camp host is. Then 22:00 rolls around and our camp neighbors are a bunch of teenagers talking about guns and shooting from long distances (from home to their school) until 01:00 (why I didn't get up to ask them politely to be quiet since we have an early morning). The camp host didn't go around or even close the gate at 22:00 to make sure that everyone is following the camp quiet hours. I hope they never hire this camp host again. She is rude, obnoxious, and flat out doesn't do her job. This place is beautiful and I was hoping to enjoy it but I was asking too much by wanting a camp host that does their job.

This is a medium busy campground right on the main road, but its never too noisy after dark. The place is very clean and the vault toilets well looked after and not stinky! The spaces are a good size and the ones for tent camping are at the back of the loop. Not much trails but you can find something to do. One of my best nights camping was up here. It is west of John Day if you are coming from there, close to MP-50. It is near the summit, in a ponderosa pine forest and at an elevation of 4,700 ft. with nice vistas. The campground is one big loop with one part of the loop higher than the other so everyone gets a view. Cell service for our Verizon hot spot was ok. This is first come first served, dry camping, there are pit toilets, but no electricity, water or sewer hookups. There is a small amount of road noise during the day, but pretty much none at night. It is close enough to Prineville, Mitchell, the Painted Hills and the Fossil Beds for day trips. There are a lot of options for camping, drive thru loops, back in sites, sites that are parallel to the road, and a group site. I think there are 28 sites, 3 are flat enough for the handicapped. We stayed there June 24, 2018. We have a 36' RV and were towing a Subaru and have 2 large dogs. There were 4 pull thru sites that would have fit us nicely and the day we got there in the early afternoon 3 were available. We will definitely stay there again. The camp host was very friendly and helpful and the campground was well maintained.

Still a bargain for some awesome FUN in nature. You assemble at 10 a.m. to sign waivers and confess your age on the form...get outfitted with the appropriately-sized life jacket. And buy some last-minute things in the office, such as chapstick with sun screen and a water-tight container for smokes. Also pet Lucy the wonder dog. Bring nothing except a great attitude, because they will take pictures for you (having guys stationed along the route with a ready and well-practiced camera). They have SHUTTLE transportation and it's a SHORT RIDE to the put in. We had a badass female river guide...DEB....she was the lead that day, and gave us some great advice on how to row (use your core, not your arms)...easy-to-understand rowing instructions...and she emphasized the fun AND the safety. No one swamped or got pulled into the water, unless they wanted to swim...she also memorized our names and talked a little with everyone on the trip. Also her voice carried nicely over the rushing water and the screaming of the clients...Way to go! Awesome job, Deb! This is a CLASS III river...with plenty of time to recover and just float...water was a little low...so rocks were exposed here and there...and while there weren't the big big holes or crazy nuts insane hydraulics, it was still super fun and we did get super wet. Plus there are LAVA TUBE formations below, so it created interesting spinning motions for the rafting experience....plus there's a rapid where we could STAND UP while paddling (my favorite thing to do!!! Whoooo hooooo). Our guide DEB told us about the geology, the flora and fauna along the river...and she told us the names of each set....Wapinitia...Boxcar...AND she also pointed out the nesting OSPREY and pointed out the deer resting underneath an oak tree...we saw SWALLOWS, the swallows nesting under the bridge...the DUCKS zipping fast out of our way...I LOVE WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS! Deb was also encouraging to our not-so-coordinated and the young'uns...again much appreciated, Deb. One cool feature....you can bullride the nose of the raft and get completely drenched. Everyone on the left side gets wetter...HINT: Just check which side the river guide sits, that will tell you which side is the dry side. I really wanted to ride the nose but I was a tag-a-long on this family vacation, but next time. SHOUTOUT: Friendly upbeat river guides. Also nice picnick lunch...a guy named Rabbit grilled the hamburgers....the buns all stacked in a pyramid....all the fixings and condiments...nicely and evenly cut tomato slices...watermelon, beautifully sliced thin (someone has pretty good culinary knife skills!!).... freshly-baked store-bought type sugar cookies with m & m in them....being a vegetarian/vegan, it was easy to make a tomato onion pickle sandwich from what was on the table. Had they had prior warning, I wonder if they would have had a garden burger for me...it was a thoughtful picnic setup nonetheless. OVERALL: Great outfitter. Reasonable cost to purchase pics, shown to you on an IPAD, then given to you on a flashdrive. Bigtime FUN on the river...on a breezy warm, but not too warm, perfect Thursday.
