    Golden Latte

Here's the thing about this place it's based on the mantra of being "happiness/serotonin dealers" my experience here didn't make me happy. I felt the whole place was a "little high on its own supply" maybe that's because all the staff and people frequenting this place subscribe to happiness/whole food/paleo theory. I like good food, I love individuality & I adore fair prices. I didn't experience much of these here. White walls, standard potted succulents, they serve water in science beakers, which I guess is their way of being edgy. The menu was very expensive. $10 for a young coconut served with a short black on the side didn't sit well with me. I do understand that ethically sourcing products and ingredients is expensive but this was excessive. We didn't eat here. I couldn't justify it to be honest. I had the "golden latte". It was suppose to be tumeric milk but it just tasted like black pepper. The thing I found to be confusing is the way the menu reads like a whole food, health conscious eatery, yet it has a scientific attitude. I understand there is a science to happiness as there is every emotion but when you are serving breakfasts and light meals I'm unsure how you can educate people over eggs. The venue is busy. Very busy yet it's aim it to create a hub for the community. In sure they will be successful because let's face it the health movement is well underway but I eat healthy most meals so I won't be returning to this place, I'll be staying at home and making my own meals for the the week for the price brunch would cost me here.

    A delicious picollo

Serotonin is a chemical created in the body and widely believed to regulate your mood. Serotonin Eatery takes the concept of good health to another level. The largely plant based menu focuses on healthy eating. Sticking with the chemistry theme, water is served in conical flasks and my ristretto came with a small beaker of sparkling water. Speaking of which coffee was strong, decent. However I enjoyed my picollo more (yes I ordered two coffees - something I rarely do), though I would've preferred it warmer, the taste was great, foamy, smooth with chocolate notes. The beans used are the Dark Horse blend from Five Senses. Ambient bass heavy tunes, an unpretentious space, individual and communal tables plus sunken seating gives this a family friendly feel. There were plenty of kids and given this is across the road from a park it's easy to duck out if the rug rats need to burn off some energy. I ordered the Plant Powered Pizza - Butternut pumpkin, thyme, garlic and rosemary base, topped with feta, pumpkin purée, eggplant, olives, zaatar, onion, pine nuts and greens. Given it was breakfast I also added a poached egg ($3). Food came quick, good texture, crispy around outside, soft in middle. The sizings are generous .. was planning on ordering a dessert (have heard the homemade Golden Gaytime is good), but was feeling fully satiated. Attentive helpful and very healthy looking staff, they had toys for the kids and quickly mopped up spills. Things went quite smoothly until it was time to pay the bill where it's a bit chaotic. A mixture of people settling bills, and those ordering coffees at the bar plus the lady with the iPad didn't accept cash. As someone who tries to eat healthy I felt clean and full by the end. This is a place I would visit again, if for no other reason than to finally try that Golden Gaytime dessert.

A buzzing Cafe in Melbourne. Top of the trending cafes therefore expect a wait! A 30 minute wait on a Sunday so be prepared or get in early! A great variety of choices. Generous sizes match the prices. Although you'll be full on serotonin be sure to get a take away raw dessert in the front cabinet!

Plant based food + swing seats + sunshine + vegan Golden Gaytime... Happiness, I have arrived. When I travel I have a hit list and Serotonin Eatery was on top of my Melbourne one. And it exceeded my Instagram stalking expectations! Situated across from a park on a neighbourhood corner, I immediately cursed everyone that calls in on the way to work - I want this to be my local! The premise is simple - food can change your life, and one look at the Serotonin menu and I knew mine would never be the same. First - the drinks menu **swoon** offers cocoa coconut latte, peanut butter latte, turmeric latte plus perfectly punchy coffee. All my obscure and delicious favourites! I had a coconut decaf mocha with homemade coconut milk that came in a hug mug with a smiley face that hit all the right spots. Breakfast was a deconstructed sushi bowl - it tasted incredible with pickled ginger, quinoa, brown rice, avocado, sesame seeds, greens, herbs, carrot and surprise flavour syringe of tamari (GF soy sauce). My friend got the rainbow nutrition bomb and both bowls filled us more than we expected, cue food coma. I also got a side of seasonal greens and avocado, 10/10. The staff were super lovely and happy to talk through the menu - the owner Emily was working and we chatted about how she started Serotonin Eatery to change people's lives. A pro tip: don't try and leave room for dessert but eat it anyway! The most popular sweet is the vegan Golden Gaytime - a creative take on my favourite childhood ice cream. Serotonin's version is more mousse like, but the flavour and look is spot on. Crumbed in activated buckwheat with that familiar caramel taste, I was swinging into cloud nine for the rest of the day. Oh yes, I did mention the swings - YES ACTUAL SWINGS! Make sure you nab one of the playful swing seats (indoor and outdoor) to pump up your serotonin levels and start your day with a blast of nutrition and fun.

Their main theme is also being positive and sharing happiness with a smile, basically " The Science of Making you Happy!" Emily has taken the healthy eating seriously with the help of nutritionist, naturopaths, food scientist and many other specialist to create the best menu but also the best look and atmosphere of the venue.

Vegan salted caramel dessert was amazing!

Downstairs you can currently get everything from coffee and pastries to ice cream sandwiches or waffles and cereal. Upstairs is home to Storm in a Teacup and 'The Val' (Valhalla Social Cinema). The Val is a small theatre showing cult classic and independent films on Friday and Saturdays. To top it off? They also host food trucks in the evening for dinner. This makes it a fun space to check out at any time of day really! Today I went in for a hot cross bun (it's never too early!) and an iced filter coffee - next time I want to check out a flick, eat dinner and devour an ice cream sandwich. Sticking around until September - I hope to be a regular between now and then!

Part of me wishes it would just stay the way it is now rather than become another pub. On the current rotation of pop-ups there is Willis & Co coffee and pastries, ice cream sandwiches (OMG so good), healthy food from Fit Inn and the cinema upstairs. Previous tenants included Rustica, Pressed Juices and Storm in a Teacup. I am keen to see who else might pop up. Yes, pun intended. They also have food trucks that visit and park out the back on various occasions. Either way, get yourself down there to try those ice cream sandwiches, even in the cold weather - you won't be disappointed!

We visited on one of their quieter days, and although it was almost empty when we arrived, about half the tables quickly filled up with patrons visiting for a mix of coffees and pastries (Also made by Wide Open Road), or breakfast. It's a simple, clean fit out and works well for laid back brunches or a calm environment for a business meeting. There are a range of tables, including two well suited for larger groups. The menu comes in roughly two parts- there's your more traditional breakfast options - free range eggs, avocado, pikelets, porridge, fritters etc. and then there's Bowls or Broths, which are definitely going to become Terror Twilight's trademark. There's a lot to love about them - they're healthy, full of flavour, fresh and totally on trend. Choosing them comes in 4 parts. Firstly, decided if you want a bowl or a broth, then choose base, add your sides, and a protein. I opted for haloumi, sweet potato, and tumeric + cumin tossed cauliflower in my bowl, with a base of broccoli and winter greens and chicken for my protein. My other half went for a chicken broth, with buckwheat noodles, a soft boiled egg and fresh bokchoy, enoki mushrooms, beanshoots and thai basil, adding salmon for his protein. I want to say the best thing about them is that they are so healthy, but it's not. It's either that they are so delicious, or that you get to build your own dish, so they are really versatile, or that they cater really well for dietary requirements - so you can please everyone! We also got to try the pikelets, which came with grilled plums, cherry and cardamom syrup, coconut yoghurt and hazelnut brittle. These were also vegan and were amazing, they were light and airy and really tasty. They were so easy to eat, I could have devoured about 100 of them. I enjoyed the syrup and the brittle, but I think a smaller fruit like blueberries or strawberries would have completed the delicate pancakes better. A quick final word on the coffee. My other half tried the batch which is a strong, but enjoyable brew - will really wake you up. You can customise this by adding extra shots too. We liked the healthy conscious, clean eats undertone of Terror Twilight. It's not in your face about it, but most of the menu is healthy, fresh food. It tastes great and really sets you up well for the day. It's a got a good all day, versatile menu, with plenty of options to keep you coming back.
