I think it's because no one else makes you do this plus I found it to be fairly comprehensive. So when I called to make the appointment for my massage and was asked further questions it became repetitive. But when I entered Serenity I was happy to be warmly greeted and taken right in for my massage so it was worth it. And then it all made sense. This was the first time ever I wasn't sitting outside a massage room filling out paperwork before a massage. So that meant no one else would be sitting outside my room during my massage filling out their own paperwork and perhaps asking questions and interrupting an ongoing massage with questions and possibly loud talking. Onto my massage: it was One hour of pure relaxing, muscle loosening bliss. The room was dark and it seem to have been soundproofed in some manner because although it is located on busy Baltimore Pike I couldn't hear a sound from outside. I fell asleep and awakened to zero muscle aches. I enjoyed it enough to purchase 2 gift certificates upon check out. NOTE: the 50% of gift certificates are only good for 3 months. I often purchase Groupon discount vouchers so I can try new places and most of them I use only once and never return. My appointment was this afternoon but before I left I made a new one so I can return in a few weeks.....that's how much I liked this place. Helen did my facial, it was so relaxing and my skin looked and felt great when I left. If you know media you also know there's no Parking anywhere but serenity has onsite free parking so there's no worry about driving around for 20 minutes to find an empty space. I found this place through groupon. I had issues with scheduling my appointment. I wanted to go on a Saturday since they told me they aren't open past 4. When I showed up to my appointment a lady sitting outside smoking said that she called me to cancel the appointment but it turned out that my phone number in the system was wrong. She walked me in and we rescheduled it for a weekday at 6 which I thought was odd since they told me they close at 4. The person doing my facial was also the receptionist and she locks the door during the facial. If you arrive to the appointment early you have to wait outside which I thought was odd. I think she told me that the receptionist left and they didn't replace her. I eventually received my facial and I had no complaints about the service. It was my first time getting a facial and she was very knowledgable. At the end of the appointment she recommended a couple of products that I declined. She also recommended a different treatment for another visit at a discounted price. I accepted it and scheduled the appointment for it. It was a little odd that she made me pay for my next appointment in advance. She also gave me a business card with the normal cost of a facial and a breakout of tips based on various percentages. So, I found Serenity Wellness Center back through Groupon when I was looking for a facial after having an allergic reaction to antibiotics. Helen, who did my facial and has several times thereafter is absolutely amazing and really takes the time to customize and put thought into what would be best for my skin. Since seeing her, my skin has been in a much better place than the past, and much of the terrible acne and hyperpigmentation I've struggled with well throughout my teenage years up until now is really well under control. Her recommendations for my skin care routine and what products not to use have really been a lifesaver and now I'm very satisfied with my routine and overall feel better about looking at my face in the mirror which is something I've struggled with for a long time. John, who does the therapeutic massages, I started going to about three weeks ago after severe and painful knots in my neck from constant stress and migraines. I had tried another place in Media and though the woman was very nice and pleasant, it was incredibly painful and I left with a migraine and not feeling relaxed. After seeing John for several weeks, my shoulders have been much better and he has taken the time to recommend stretches and exercises that keep my tension from getting out of control. On both their parts, whenever I got to Serenity Wellness Center, I never feel pressured to get any particular services and I really feel like my care and wellbeing is important and it's not just about pushing out generic services to make money. THIS PLACE IS A DISASTER. The only reason I gave one star is that the masseuses are excellent. (But we can find them at other places, so as not to have to suffer through the awful office part of the business.) Otherwise, every aspect of running that business is D level. We made appointments, which they lost, so when we showed up for massage, they turned us away (this happened twice). One time, we showed up In the lobby for a massage appointment, only to be promptly asked to go out on the sidewalk, because "the door should have been locked, and it's not possible you had a massage scheduled tonight!" Another time, we showed up to find that the masseuse had called out that day (but no one bothered to call our cell phones to cancel). We prepaid for visits and had gift certificates. But when we attempted to schedule an appointment, they could not find their copy, so insisted we hold on the telephone for 15 minutes while they rifled through their files, trying to find their copy, which they had lost. When we showed up with certificate in hand, they made snide comments about the certificates, almost to insinuate they were fake. We showed up for a massage, and stood at the receptionist desk, while the receptionist ignored us while typing text messages on her phone, only to be finally greeted with,"your name?". A massage is supposed to be relaxing, fun, and make you feel special. This place will make your blood boil. I suspect, based on the other bad reviews and corresponding responses, that the owner doesn't get it, and wants to make excuses. This place won't last. I went to Serenity when a friend bought me a groupon for a facial as a gift. My complaint isn't even about the intake process, which I did not feel was that difficult but see that many others did. My appointment was at 1:30, so I arrived at about 1:15. We got started a few minutes late because Helen was on the phone with another client. Again, not immediately a problem, as my facial was only supposed to be 60 minutes and I didn't have to be anywhere until 4. I thought I had plenty of time. However, during my service, Helen left the room 2 or 3 times to make calls to other clients, each time being gone for 20-30 minutes. It seemed like the facial was taking a long time with her long absences, so I let her know that I needed to be at work by 4. She again left the room and got on the phone. 30 minutes later, I checked the time and saw that it was 3:15, so I got dressed and went out to let her know that I needed to leave. As someone who works in customer service, I thought that this was horrendous. Not to mention, her response when I complained about how long it took was that I should've left more time before I had to be anywhere. I thought that 2 1/2 hours was plenty of time for a 60 minute service. I was offered nothing for the fact that I only received part of my service because she was on the phone. I even filled out the survey that I was sent through email to let her know I was dissatisfied, but received no response. Helen: I see that you like to respond to Yelp reviews and tell people why it was their fault that you delivered poor service. Please enlighten me on how I could've done better. So we bought a Groupon for this place without first reading the reviews here. Big mistake. I think if we had read the reviews, we would likely have passed on the deal. However, that didn't happen and we had a very similar experience as most of the other reviewers. This place has probably the most cumbersome scheduling process I have ever experienced. I have gone to the doctor and they have asked less questions. So before reading the fine print of the Groupon, my husband calls and tries to make an appointment. They did not call back, so he tried again, and then once more for good measure. After still not receiving a call back, he does read the Groupon and realizes that they will not return a call until you fill out their online application. So he does that and then calls them. What happens next is probably one of the most tedious and unnecessary phone calls of my life. This is Comcast-level horrible. We are on the phone for over 20 minutes repeating all of the answers from there online form and getting attitude when the scheduler finds out that we are unwilling to take off of work to get a massage which is what I would have to do in order to meet their 10-4 pm appointment window. The woman on the phone informs me that most other people have much more flexible work schedules then I do, and can't I just take some time off? When I assure her that I do not want to take a day off just to get a massage, and that maybe our schedules are just not going to mesh, she then says that she does have more flexibility than the original hours of 10-4 M-F she told us about. This is what I do not understand. She initially asked when I was available and I told her. Then she proceeded to argue with me and try to convince me to take an appt during that window where I had already told her I was not free. Why not start with the time that you know is going to work for the customer? I drive by this place all the time and they are regularly open at 7 or 8 pm. So I do not know why there was such a level of attitude or why the phone call was such a process. When did arrive for the massage it was actually very nice. I think mine was a solid 4/5 and my husband said his was a 5/5. If the scheduling process was easier, this would definitely be a better review because the actual massages would be worth going back for. We likely will not be going back as I just did not want to deal with the annoyance of scheduling again. Also, there were signs all over the place reminding you to tip and letting you know that the masseuse only gets revenue from tipping. I bought a Groupon and went to this spa for a microdermabrasion treatment which was ok, and I bought some products, plus paid in advance and scheduled a facial for several weeks later (I spent a total of close to $300.) When I missed my appointment for the followup facial because of some very difficult family problems, I was told that I had forfeited my $100 paid for the facial, and they would only give me a $50 credit. I am in a service industry myself, and we would never do that to clients, because in the long run, it loses you customers. It will definitely lose me as a customer to this business. read more

Let me say, I found Serenity on Groupon and I was a little skeptical of the reviews. I'm not sure why this place got bad reviews but this place is great! It's a small charming business with character. I got a facial by the owner, Helen who was great and gave me tips about skincare. When I was done I observed the bright smile of a client who had got a massage by the male masseuse . I saw nothing but smiles there! At the end of my service, they offered a promotion to buy gift certificates at 50% off but you could only buy 1 for yourself and up to 4 for friends. I did not buy any on the first visit of my service nor was I pressured. I wanted to see if I had any results. They allowed me to buy them on my second visit. I even bought a massage for my mother for Mothers Day! As far as tipping, that was on my own and I was not given an envelope. Envelopes are sitting on counter. I do believe if you enjoy a service you should tip accordingly and if you don't then it should reflect it. However, you do have to fill a questionnaire out online before calling to make an appointment...this may not be convenient for older clientele. This was the worst massage I have ever received. I had a groupon for the 60 minute deep tissue, hot towel and face and scalp massage. I arrived a few minutes early and the therapist was still getting the room ready. I thought the lighting was weird in the room. I did get to pick which oil I wanted which was nice, but that was the only nice thing about the massage. I felt like I was being rushed because she was going so fast. When she asked me about the pressure I told her I was not that comfortable with it, and then she said" well that's deep pressure...so..." I have had 4 or 5 deep tissue massages in my life and all were very nice. She also did weird stretches with my arms that nearly pulled me off the table and I felt exposed. I found this center through group-on, my best friend and I decided to treat ourselves and go for a massage together. Scheduling an appointment was rather annoying when we first called the phone was answered by a rude lady who wouldn't talk to us unless we filled out the form on the website, which I didn't mind filling out the form she just sounded so dismissive. After filling out the form and scheduling our appointments for a Thursday, we stopped in and first impressions of the place was that it was very small and had a charm to it. My friend was just coming out of her massage and I was slightly early for mine, sitting in the small lobby are was nice I loved that they had little copper glasses for the detox tea ( we received a sort of bundled deal that included the massage, aroma therapy and detox tea) which Helen explained how the tea was served and how it worked which I was very happy with. Helen was very nice, however she did try and guilt trip us into leaving a tip. Almost the entire sit in the lobby for my friend and I after our massages was her explaining how people don't leave tips and how that hurts the business. How they don't really get paid with the groupon ticket and how she has a part time job at another business to support herself and things that really ruined the feeling I had after a wonderful massage. Which I completely understand, I am sympathetic to your problems and am really happy to leave a tip no problem but I feel as though as a customer that isn't my problem. It is not my fault that you signed up for a groupon service and your not being paid, I paid 50 dollars so in my mind I paid you for a service plus tip. You dont know my situation, this could have been a gift and your pressuring someone to leave a tip. Yes its common courtesy and your basically an asshole if you don't leave a tip but that changed the whole environment for me, it was just a bit much from the time that we sat down to the time that we left. I don't think that she handled the situation well especially talking to new customers, its not our fault that previous customers didn't pay you a tip. Frankly you dont know my situation I could have had just enough to pay for this massage and you didnt really give me the opportunity. Worst customer service ever. Takes forever to set up appointments. I did everything they asked like put all my personal information on their website and call. Every time I called no one answered. When someone finally got back to me I was at work and the woman on the phone was very rude to me. She told me she "didn't feel like playing phone tag with me". What a waste of $60. This is a reply to Helen. First of all I don't need to be forgiven for anything because I didn't do anything wrong. Your receptionist was rude to me. I told her multiple times that I was busy and that I could not give her any information at the moment and she pestered me over and over and then made the comment about how she did not want to play phone tag with me. She did not say it in a nice way. She said it like she didn't feel like calling me again. That's when I hung up because I was just absolutely appalled. If you look at the call logs you will see I've been trying to make appointments since January. I think it's absolutely ridiculous that you don't have someone answer the phone when someone calls. You talk about your "50 good reviews" well I'm seeing mostly bad ones, and most of them are centered around your bad customer service. Maybe that's why you only have 2.5 stars. I live in Media, and when I saw a living social coupon for a massage I immediately purchased it, as I never heard of this place before. I had signed up for a 60 minute Swedish massage, and upon talking over my issues with the masseuse, Joan, she said that it seemed like I should get a therapeutic massage and she upgraded me for free. The facility is small, and in fact it was so cozy that I can't even call it a facility since it felt more homelike, which I prefer for massages since it promotes a relaxed and welcoming feeling. I had no issues with scheduling or with being greeted, and I was immediately made to feel welcome. Joan gave a wonderful and professional massage that I enjoyed very much. She was very knowledgeable and helpful, and paid a lot of attention to my needs which I felt was important. I was having quite a few issues and she was very helpful. I enjoyed the experience so much that I purchased a 90 minute therapeutic massage and a facial with Helen. I got my facial a couple of weeks ago and it was a great experience as well. Helen was also very knowledgeable and made me feel confident in her abilities as well. I also had some skin care issues that I'd like to work on and I loved the products that she used, all natural and organic which is very important to me. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased another facial to come again. I just got my 90 minute massage last night, and unfortunately I was not able to do so with Joan since she has been out with an injury, and Helen gave me the massage. They both have different techniques but it was still a wonderful experience and I enjoyed it immensely. It was nice to actually be able to experience both Joan and Helen and so in the future I can decide which one would suite my need better at the time. I definitely plan on becoming a frequent member here due to the wonderful location and to the quality of service. It took three phone calls to connect to schedule an appointment and when I finally did I found the staff on the other end to be rude and repetitive. I clearly stated to the first staff member I spoke with I did not wish to receive email or texts from their company - she noted such. I was then transferred to a second staff member who insisted I had to provide a phone number and they had to text me - within a minute of the end of our phone call (which took up 17 minutes of the work day!) a had received a redundant text message and email. The staff member on the other end was haughty and rude - would give the customer service a zero percent. ( Although I agree with other reviews that the scheduling process is very inconvenient.) While there I was offered the chance to purchase future massages at a discount price, which I did. I bought 2 and planned to use them for my husband and myself for our anniversary. When I pulled them out to make the appointments, they had expired in March. I called to see if there was anything that could be done, and was pretty much told no. For some reason whoever issued the certificates didn't write anything on them except a number and the expiration date, no value or service or anything. The woman who got on the phone was short with me, insinuating that the certificates weren't legit, and asked me to text her a picture of the certificates. I did, and nearly a week later.. no response. I understand that they're expired, but if you want to keep a customer you could at least respond. And maybe apply the purchase value to another service, especially since I wasn't told that they expired so soon or I wouldn't have bought them. Just overall poor customer service. read more

Like others I also came from Groupon, and unfortunately for me, ended up with the woman taking my money, and never giving me a massage. She won't even reschedule or refund your money. She'll redeem your groupon, so you better go or you're going to end up with nothing. TRUST ME. This is a poorly run business attempting to lure people in with Groupon which will then happily take your money (or at least 50% of the people who schedule's money) She posts personal problems on her business fb which was VERY unprofessional, there customer support is virtually nonexistant and requires you to text a bunch of information to even be seen, and is over all not a good place to get a massage. They have very risky and questionable business procedures and seem to be struggling with money as I was told which is why she has to do what she does. I don't know about the quality of the massage or much else about the place, but I do know that you can finally equally as good and much better in a business much more professional and better run. Customer service is lousy! I booked a future appointment while at the location for a treatment (since calling to book an appointment is quite a hassle). Apparently there was a 'glitch' with their booking program and I never got an email confirmation for my future appointment. I showed up (driving an hour in rush hour traffic) to be told I did not have an appointment. Ok, My bad for not knowing I should have received an email. But what completely shocked me, I was told the technition had too many phone calls to return, she couldn't take care of me. I would have been able to accept 'I have another client coming in', but too many phone calls to return, completely unacceptable!!! And I was a repeat client on a yearly facial plan.
