Everyone we met was caring and knowledgeable. Extremely comforting and professional for the last days with our father. Thank you so much.

The convenience of having a hospice caregiver come to us was good. -Medications and basic essentials are provided as long as your health insurance allows it. -Operators on the 24hr phone line were professional. -Quality of care was good but with caveats. See below Cons -Not great communication. Case worker and some nurses would not reply to messages at times. I understand time off for individuals are needed but we were never informed of their schedules. No follow up calls to ensure the situation was resolved. -Bedside manner needs improving. Not much sympathy for loved one and family. One condolence text was sent from one of the nurses. However, the text also inquired when they can come by to pick up the important unused meds. Sigh. -Medications were not always reviewed or revised in a timely manner. I had to stay on top of which meds my loved one was taking and how they affected them. Loved one kept on saying the medications were making things worse. It makes me question some of the judgement calls that this facility made. Overall, this facility just does the job but that's it. There is not much sensitivity to the loved ones. In my opinion, they have calloused themselves to the point of having a production line mentality to get the job done. It's difficult to say how this affected my loved one's passing. My advice is to please do extensive research when choosing a hospice facility. Your loved one's care is worth the time and effort.

From almost the beginning we had serious issues with over medication and no concern whatsoever with which meds Mike had no tolerance for or sensitivity to. We had a roller coaster ride that was exhausting and now I know, completely unnecessary. Mike hallucinated off and on from too much morphine when he should have been on Fentanyl patches. The nurse and social worker were very nice people but the doctor was impossible. I found another hospice that immediately put Mike on Fentanyl patches and the hallucinations stopped. He got his sanity back and things have been on a pretty even keel since July, i am deeply disappointed though, in hospice care on the whole. It is not what I expected or imagined. I feel like we really have nobody except ourselves. I don't know if this is the usual or not. I have had to do my own research on medication and other aspects of care and even now I don't feel supported. The doctors do not examine or even speak to the patient or caregiver. Everything is done through a nurse and you have to push for every single thing. It's frustrating and I feel, dangerous. My impression is that they use the cheapest medications possible, and ignore everything else. No real care beyond passing out drugs. A sad situation made worse by an indifferent healthcare system.

I've been very pleased with both their service and their caregivers. The office staff is responsive and quick to answer questions, and every caregiver we've had has been kind, capable, and helpful. One caregiver in particular deserves special recognition: Arthur. On his first visit, he arrived while I was rushing to get ready for dinner with friends and still needed to prepare my husband for the evening. Arthur immediately stepped in without hesitation and took over so I could leave on time. He was wonderful with my husband and handled everything with calm confidence. Because of Arthur's help, I was able to relax and enjoy my evening without worry. I'm very grateful for the support we've received from Right at Home.

However, awhile back (and on a Sunday) I needed emergency help with Mike when he took too much of his pain meds and it took me 3 phone calls and Ardent 2 hours to respond. I was furious to say the least and refused to even let the nurse in when he finally did show up. Mike was all right as it turned out but this is not the place to call in a rush or a pinch. I was under the impression we were to call them instead of the paramedics, but that is apparently not the case. Following those events nobody at Ardent ever reached out to speak to me or try to understand what happened, and I am Mike's caregiver. I am still on the fence as to whether this was a good idea for us.

So this review has a background of research in the desert area in which choices were available and fortunately finances did not get in the way of choices. I have been to the care facilities rated well and those not so well...and there are factors that I learned which are most important making your decision...size, care concern of the staff, administration, activities, actual accomodation, cleanliness, and sound ( you would be surprised how loud some places are due to room placement, thin walls, guests sitting alone in a hallway or inefficient response to call buttons so the place is just bells going off and sadly the lone patient or resident yelling for help.) I have visited the ones with stunning grounds and lobbies only to find the rooms dated and the staff overworked or doing the minimum to keep your loved ones alive. I have seen medical mistakes where fail safe systems failed due to staff not following protocol. So if I have to say one thing to anyone looking for their parent don't be fooled by the whistles and bells, don't be fooled by the fancy exterior or lobbies or a few lounges truly look inside. So now my review...Emeritus has been a consistent oasis for my parents. first my dad in their skilled nursing then my mom in both skilled and assisted living. ( Please note: I made a mistake for three weeks sending my mom elsewhere to another skilled facility in Palm Desert that allegedly had a great reputation with the pretty lobby and grounds etc but it turned out to be a place whose reputation did not match its care level and was more hype.Though the staff had competent members, mistakes were made too many times for comfort) this is to show my review is not solitary I visited numerous facilities while researching a place for my parent(s) Emeritus is clean, a quiet place where your parent or loved one can heal if in skilled nursing, they actually care and learn names, and work to improve your loved ones well being...you never sense the business side only the care side and they make the effort to comfort your parent and your concerns (only complaint which is common in skilled nursing was the food but you don't go there expecting fine dining). Their assisted living is lovely small quaint with activities. The RNs and CNAs are top notch and interact with guests, and know everything that's going on at anytime with all their guests and management is great. Accommodations are clean well thought out and with huge closets ( ok that may not be important to you but when your parent down sizes the ability to keep a lot of their personal clothes and items is very important) food is better ;) I simply can't say enough about this facility it's a little gem. And being across the street from Eisenhower hospital near many doctors is a plus. Now I don't know about other emeritus properties I can only judge this one, so this review is only about Rancho Mirage. So when you begin to look, consider this property for your parent and your piece of mind when you go home just knowing he or she is in safe hands is vital....because in the end that is all that matters.
