I had a Groupon for two and decided to take my 10 year old son on a nice trail ride. The world of…read morePolo is dominated by Spanish speaking countries so I was not surprised there is a bit of a language barrier there. It was really not a big deal at all. The ride was pretty the horses are in great shape and our two tour guides were very nice. Most definitely worth it!

I got a Livingsocial for a group beginner's polo lesson. I've done some riding before and thought…read moreit sounded interesting and fun. Since the place is 1.5 hours from where I live, I was lazy about redeeming it. I finally called and the conversation went like this: "When are group polo lessons?" "When do you want to come?" "Well, tell me when they are offered and I will let you know" "When do you want to come?" So finally I just made an appointment essentially. I arrived at the farm and there was only one man there who spoke no English. I was slightly early so I waited in my car because the whole place was deserted. The instructor showed up 20 minutes late and we didn't get started with my lesson for another 10 minutes. So, 30 minutes after I scheduled it. It turned out to not be a group lesson at all. First we practiced using the mallet and a polo ball on foot so I could get the feel for it. The instructor said there are no left handed polo players. Well I was terrible at holding it in my right hand so he left me hit the ball lefty. (I have since googled it and playing polo lefty was banned in 1974!) After a while I mounted the horse, rode around a little bit and then tried to hit the ball up and back on the field. It was really hard!! I had a great time hitting the ball and took a few 10-15 minute breaks to just ride around on the horse because my arm was so sore from holding the mallet. All in all, I had a really nice time. However, it was a bit awkward to be the only customer on this enormous property when I was expecting a simple group lesson with other people. I also would have appreciated the instructor being on time. He was very nice though, and I did get an excellent lesson. Perhaps it would have been better if I booked this with friends but it was so far away and none of my friends ride horses.

Not simply because he was running late, but because the house (castle/waiting room/party room) was absolutely filthy. I was really taken aback by a business looking like this, even if it's a business that works w/ animals. When we got there, the owner and assistant were on a ride w/ another group. Then the group we were supposed to be riding with were an hour late, so we had to wait for them. It was just annoying, although Steven (owner) was friendly. When we walked into the empty house it looked like a construction space, a hen was walking around the inside and I even saw it poop IN THE KITCHEN! Things finally turned around when I hopped on Sherman (my white horse w/ black spots). He was a greedy little thing and ate up all the grass but he was a great horse. Steven immediately put ppl on the horses and taught us while we were riding. He was a straight to it teacher and I liked that. He definitely knows what he's doing when it comes to animals. He took a bunch of pictures and videos and sent them to everyone in the group. I'm thankful to have such awesome pictures that didn't cost us extra. I'm giving 4 stars despite the filth because Steven was friendly, welcoming, and I enjoyed the experience. Tip: -don't eat there if germs bug u -don't arrive early, there's no point -yes, you're in the right spot, even though it looks a little funky on the outside

He also never redeemed our Groupon. He has repeatedly messaged me and begged me to remove this review and has even reported it to Yelp to try to get it removed. Not only do I stand by my review but this Steven Strasburg owner has proved himself to not only be completely unprofessional but also desperate and dishonest. My advice: TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY for your business instead of accusing people of posting fake reviews or saying "it must've been another place". This is the ONLY time where an owner has not only not apologized but tried to say I'm posting for the wrong Castle Strasburg. How many Castle Strasburg horseriding places are there in Midland, VA? Never thought I could find such a safe, beautiful, and comfortable setting so affordably. The farm and facilities are old but sound, safe, and tidy. It has a lighted indoor arena (my first time having one!) with good footing, three lighted outdoor riding arenas, and trails through acres of fields and woods. Farm owner/manager Anna is nearly always on the scene and is approachable and amenable. This is a real working farm. Anna's husband grows the hay the horses are fed and it is gorgeous. This is the first barn I've ever known to promise "24/7 free-choice hay" all winter and actually provide it. The farm crew delivers round bales on forklifts to every paddock and the horses bury their faces in it. My mare remained healthy, sound, and well fed. Speaking of paddocks, Anna's double-paddocks (one for winter, one for summer, both with run-in sheds) for each field-boarded herd of 3-4 are nearly the size of some other farms' entire pastures. I stall-boarded my mare briefly for convenience when she was for sale and appreciated the large, airy stalls and, again, the mountain of hay. Another nice aspect of Potomac Riverside Stables is the social part. All of the boarders that I met were responsible adults who were friendly to all even as they formed their own groups based on riding preferences, abilities, and schedules. I never felt judged. And no thieves: I've never had anything as much as a brush taken, even when I left something out for days. There is always someone to ride or chat with, always someone to ask for advice, and plenty of trainers who teach onsite. Potomac Riverside Stables was a good experience for me. If I get another horse I will board there again.

Repairs so far made significant improvement in its' facilities safety and appearance. More work is presently underway. The current crew are very knowledgeable and hard working. We feel that both our horses and ourselves are well cared for here. We originally boarded here for 3 1/2 years and enjoyed riding over its' ample trails and using the formal arenas. We have happily come back to ride here once again. This is a complete equestrian center no matter what type of riding you do.
