I have been riding at Misty Brae Farm since 2005. As such, I have seen a number of students enter as beginners barely able to post a trot, and progress from there into lovely and accomplished jumpers and dressage riders -- check out the 2013 CDTCA awards banquet newsletter and you will see pictures of a number of Misty Brae farm girls (Reserve Champion for Year-end Beginner Novice; Year-End Reserve Champion, Training Level Dressage Jr Division; Year-End 3rd Place, Training Level Dressage Jr Division; Rebel Colony award for eventing). Further, as a registered Pony Club facility, the girls' knowledge of horse care always impresses me. It's not just about learning to ride - it's about learning the horse. For those interested in numbers, in the 2013 Virginia Pony Club championships (East), MBF riders took home 1st in training level dressage, and 1st and second in eventing. More importantly, the girls grow into responsible and independent young women. The barn is not super flashy, but it is a nurturing environment wherein a student will be given every opportunity to advance, if they have the passion and the drive to do so. The more interest and hard work they are willing to put into their riding, the more ways they will be given to succeed. On a more personal level, I've watched the barn owner mentor several girls with difficult home lives through some very tough situations. The girls always seem to come out ahead. I have 2 daughters that ride at Misty Brae farm and are members of the pony club. The level riding and the growth of maturity and responsibility they have gained riding here is unlike anywhere else. We started at another barn that was what some would call "more upscale." However, after 2 concussions and the owner telling me they needed to fall before they could ride, we left and found Misty Brae and could not be happier! As a person who works with children for a living and understands what it takes to teach children and create muscle memories so they can be safe and progress, I am overly impressed with the lessons we receive at Misty Brae. The level of instruction we receive helped my oldest daughter, who does not ride hunter usually, be the only over fences qualifier from her HS hunter equitation team to make regionals. While it may not be spotless, it is a barn. The children who ride there are given a level of responsibility to help keep it clean and neat. We all know children and they are not always strong in their ability to put things away, but Tori has the patience to understand that and allows them to fail so they can succeed, not only in their riding, but also in life. Allowing the children to have this responsibility is what makes Misty Brae so successful in pony club. Their members often receive accolades in horse management for the cleanliness of their tack, horse and tack rooms (most exceeds standards at a rally). Their willingness to be helpful with other teams, outside of Misty brae, their ability to assist a horse/ rider in distress and their overall preparedness outside their own farm is well known in the Pony Club world. read more

My daughter has been riding at Misty Brae for three years and while I agree you can't eat off the floors, you can't ask for a better trainer than Tori. I've been to clean barns where I paid for glorified pony rides because the instruction just wasn't there. It's a little bit like judging a book by its cover. At Misty Brae they are teaching our children to be more than just good equestrians. They are learning how to be responsible, well rounded individuals. Our children help each other and they mentor each other as well as the younger children. The teenager that you see teaching a lead line lesson or performing an evaluation is a highly rated United States Pony Club member. She is able to teach lessons at the farm because she has worked for years getting to that level and because Tori saw the potential in her and trained her to do so. I don't know about anyone reading this, but when the time comes, I would rather see my teenager teaching lead line lessons at the farm (doing something that is so rewarding) than to be at Wendy's asking if you would like a side of fries with that. The growth I've seen in my daughter, both as a rider and as a teammate has been amazing. There is no place she would rather be. read more

My twins (11 years old) have been at Misty Brae since the summer of 2014. We started out by participating in the week long Summer Camps. Immediately my girls were hooked on the farm and the horses!!! I attended a the 2014 Winter and 2015 Spring Break Camp, then signed them both up for group lessons. Since April 2015 my girls have been in a one-hour a week group lesson. The instructor is awesome and very knowledgeable about dressage, jumping, horses, and the farm. She has really given my girls a passion for riding and a desire to learn more about horses, jumping, safety, and riding confidence. It is wonderful to see them succeed and want to learn more. My girls love the lesson and practice time! BUT -- what I like MOST about MISTY BRAE is the overall FAMILY environment. The farm owners, the instructors, the horse owners, the helpers, the camp moms, and the girls.....are all family. It is an environment that is safe, nurturing, caring, and promotes development. I cannot say enough about the staff and families at Misty Brae. I feel each and every one of them accepts horses and riding with an open heart. I am very happy at Misty Brae! Hi, the REAL Alex A here. Ever since my first lesson at Misty Brae I knew it was the place for me! Contrary to the review previously written under my name, I admire Tori not only as a person but as an instructor and the family atmosphere along with her remarkable teaching abilities is what has kept me coming back year after year! I came to this barn hardly being able to trot and am currently competing on the A jumper circuit, eventing at the Novice level, and attending National Pony Club ratings. There are many talented horses available to be leased as well as younger horses currently being trained who have much potential! The girls at this barn are mostly teenagers but there is not much drama as we are all close and very friendly with one another. We also are very open to new people and welcome them into our barn as if they were our family. We have a great comrodory at Misty brae and everyone is friendly to one another. No one is ever intentionally catty to other girls here. I cannot imagine not riding at Misty Brae with the horses and the family atmosphere as well as Tori's wonderful teaching!! read more

I have been riding at MBF for about 7 years now. Every day I can't wait to get to the barn. MBF is a wonderful facility for people and kids to learn A LOT about horses. When I began riding i could have never imagined having come this far in my knowledge of horses and my riding skills. I owe it to MBF and the instruction here. The owner always has the answers to my questions and always has a way to help me improve and have fun doing it. MBF has helped me achieve my goals in competitions and Pony Club.At MBF I have been able to create life long relationships and i have made best friends here. My daughter has been at Misty Brae Farm for 7 years and I can honestly say that being a part of this farm has been the makings of her. Apart from loving horses, she has thrived in this community of people; becoming the caring, mature young woman she has become. We love the responsibility that she has being given, the friends she has made and how passionate she is about this sport. Is it a pristine, immaculate looking facility? No, but who cares? My daughter gladly spends all her available free time out there and would rather be riding at MBF than anywhere else. She looks on it, as we do, like a second home. We are always in awe of her knowledge of horses and how she has progressed throughout the years. I have been riding a misty brae for almost 12 years and it is definitely considered my second home. I could not ask for a better trainer then Tori. She is caring, knowledgeable, and very patient. At Misty Brae I have learned beyond what I initially expected form riding lessons. I have made some of my best friends there as well. It allows boys and girls of all ages to go and have fun all while learning about horses and meeting new friends.
