While queued up - #410 - at the nearby BIR office (a.k.a. Where Dreams Come To Die), I decided to step out for a bit for some much needed caffeine and sanity. For a place so tiny, it surprisingly has a lot to offer. From an extensive selection of imported and local beans (Benguet, French Roast, Kalinga, Hazelnut, Sagada and Barako), to the way you want to have them (French press, siphon, or pour over--ranging from Php 65 to Php 120 only), you'll spend quite a while trying to decide. Luckily, it's also a coffee shop where you can't starve in, as they offer pasta, sandwiches, waffles, and crepes. For vegan meal options, get the Green Pesto Pasta sans cheese and chicken (I was really surprised my meal came with 3 chicken cutlets - hmm that wasn't on the dish description). If making your own cup of coffee is serious business for you, they also have some coffee presses, moka pots, and other fancy coffee gadgetry for sale and pre-order. Pythagoras Coffee & Tea is the wisest (Haha - get it?) place I know where you can get a better-than-decent cup of coffee within a 2 to 3 kilometer radius! Also, I should really have asked why the place is named after a philosopher and mathematician. I'm actually Googling it right now: "Did Pythagoras love coffee?" No hits!

The cafe doesn't have a separate area for cooking meals, so the place was filled with the smell of frying fish. It didn't make for an unpleasant experience, however (I'm just noting it here for finicky people who don't like smelling their food while it's being prepared). I was pleased with the presentation of the dish, with garnish dotted along the fluted platter the fish and chips were on. A dip was also provided on the side. The serving size for the fish and chips was large enough to keep the two of us satisfied. The staff was also friendly, and the guy at the counter even served the service water that we asked for right to our table. Their drinks are pretty pricey, and so are the dishes, but from my experience, it was worth it. 10/10 would visit again.

There were better coffee options available but I didn't feel like walking far from my gate. They are located in Terminal 1 after security. Near the windows, which have a good view of the tarmac. Seating is abundant but it was crowded this morning. The queue was long, thankfully it moved along at a steady pace and I was able to make my flight. If you weren't able to pick up branded merchandise during your trip, now is the time to do so. They have mugs, tumblers, cups, etc. with designs inspired by different destinations around the islands. There were also a few cherry blossom themed products during this time as well. The latte was average and nothing to write home about. Kind of watery. I would recommend going to Bo's Coffee or Little Flour Café on the west wing. Avoid illy Cafe Xpress. 3 ways to say goodbye in Tagalog- Sige, ingat! (okay, take care!) Their service might seem a bit slow, but then this is no fastfood joint. It's an old-fashioned coffee shop where one can go and savor the coffee and whatever else is ordered slowly. No rush rush. It's been around for about a year, and we decided to give it a try one night when we were on the way home. Since it's just a few blocks from home, we were in no hurry. Although I like to brew my own coffee, I decided to give theirs a try. It wasn't bad at all. I like the all-white inside décor because it looks so clean. There's nothing pretentious about Bake & Brew. It harkens back to a time when coffee shops were places to go to enjoy good coffee in peace. I wasn't too sure if a place like this can survive in our area, but it seems to be doing well. Everytime I pass by there's one or two customers. And having survived their first year should be a good omen for the owners. It's nothing like Starbucks or even the coffee shop from my favourite TV show Friends, and this is a good thing. I should go there more often.

Black and White Garden Cafe - A new coffee shop in a new building could be worth a visit

But since it was a hot day and I felt like I needed to take a short break, I decided to drop by Black & White Garden Cafe. This is your typical coffee shop with no pretensions about what it is. You go in and have coffee and any light snack on their menu. Since the place is quite new -- only a few months in operation --the inside is quite clean, thank you. The aircon was also cool, which was great considering that it was one of those days when the temperature was expected to hit 40 degrees. I was the only customer when I came in, but a couple more entered when I was nearly done with my coffee. Since both the Elorde gym and the Black & White Garden Cafe are new businesses, they are still feeling their way. The coffee shop will be dependent on the gym for a good number of its future clients, so I guess there must be some synergistic relationship between the two. There's a security guard house just outside the coffee shop, so that has to add to the security aspect. Not too far off is the latest branch of Starbucks, but I have to surmise that this little coffee shop will not be competing with that giant. For quiet business meetings, Black & White could be a good place as it offers more privacy than Starbucks.

What's more is that the coffee shop is very cozy that you'd enjoy with or without the company of your friends. You can read a book, bond with your friends or just have good coffee. One Friday night, I was very surprised when the baristas behind the counter suddenly took out their instruments and started an acoustic jam for the customers. Penny Lane is very music-centric, a fact that makes itself known the moment you set foot inside. From the various posters depicting iconic bands and album covers to the counter that has Beatles references placed at irregular intervals, it is easy to deduce that songs have played a big role in this place's conceptualization. Penny Lane, in case you didn't already know, is one of the Beatles' top hits back in the 60's. This coffeeshop is very cozy. If you're looking for a place to whisper sweet nothings or have a quietly intense conversation, the almost-alcove on the left immediately after entering is perfect. Laptop users will be thrilled to know that plugs abound, and you can ask to borrow an extension cord if necessary. The couches are matched with a coffee table (which automatically means that it's low), so a proper table-chair combo might be your thing if you're planning on writing heavily. The outdoor area is small, comprising two little tables with two chairs each. Be advised that there is no lip for the edge facing the parking lot, so be careful or you might tip over (onto a parked car). The staff are cheerful and enthusiastic, the air-conditioning does its job well and the selection of piped-in music is pretty good (you can request songs, actually).
