Well worth the money. For $90 I got the glycolic peel and IPL photo laser package. Lucy was very nice and added microdermabrasion and eye mask free of charge! I was a bit stress from all this traveling and my skin is not used to the east coast weather. The wind and coldness plus using heater really dries my skin out. Lucy was very flexible with the scheduling too I was surprised I get to book an appointment right after Christmas and she was able to fit me and my friends on the same day!! My skin saw noticeable difference already after the first week, her skills and facial technique is amazing. Besides IPL and Microdermabrasion, she did a little head massage, acne extraction, soft mask peel. I had an amazing experience at Serena spa! I purchased IPL with microdermabrasion on Groupon, and was able to make an appointment the same week. When I arrived they were immediately ready for me, had already pulled up my voucher, and made sure I was comfortable. I had no issues using the Groupon, unlike some places that will make you feel like awkward or charge extra fee The treatment lasted about an hour, including cooling masks, extractions and massage. After reading pretty good Yelp reviews, I bought a Groupon deal for photofacial at this place: it's not a spa but in an office room. I arrived when opened, I was the first customer. Lady from Hong Kong, Lucy, was not ready for me. When she's finally ready, she asked what I am here for. I mentioned that I bought the deal and wanted to have a Photofacial treatment. While I was replying to her question, she started assessing my skin condition and told me that I have many skin problems, spider veins, big pores and so on. After she succeeded to make me uncomfortable, she continued telling how bad my skin is and told me what I need, a lot. She then said that she didn't want to perform photofacial on me. She told me my skin tone is too dark. I told her that it's my natural skin tone. I do have a natural tan look, my skin tone is medium. I was born in a small subtropical island of East China Sea so I am naturally darker than most East Asians and, indeed, I am darker comparing to her. But she didn't budge a one bit. I gave up on her C-town confrontation and agreed to have an oxygen facial that she greatly recommended for my skin, but I came to get rid of my sunspots on my face... The bed was comfortable like your favorite chair but I was not comfortable what's on the bed, sheets. When you sleep with same sheets for a week, you know you don't feel good (not clean) that's what I felt. I was already questioning the cleanness of the office, the steamer that was spraying over my face smelled and the wet towel she put over my face had a moldy funky smell to it. I looked around for her but she was no where to find. I wanted to leave this office as quick as possible so I paid whatever she asked for her tip, $30 (20% of the regular price, $149), and left the office. I still wonder why she did not want to photofacial on my face, even I have several good Photofacial results with this skin tone from other place before. Maybe her Photofacial machine do not do well with my skin color. If so, I wish she told me honestly. First off- so incredibly accommodating. I was tied up in a meeting and the staff waited for me as they were leaving for vacation and rescheduling would have been difficult. This kind of customer service is incredibly rare. As for the microdermabrasion treatment: I have terribly sensitive skin and was worried about my reaction to the treatment. Like many other reviewers have noted, Serena Spa is a no-frills experience, but I would highly recommend any of the three procedures that I have had done here. This includes several microdermabrasion sessions, IPL for treatment of rosacea, and Laser Dark Spot Corrector to remove a large brown sun spot on my chest. The owner Lucy is very efficient in her work and will not do anything that is unnecessary, but may throw in an extra procedure if she feels like you need it and she has the time. It is the complete opposite of the up selling tactics that I have frequently experienced in other spas. She is not much of a talker, which I also find highly appealing. I just want to lay back, close my eyes, and relax without having to engage in meaningless chitchat, so her measured style of communication if perfect for me. When she wants or needs to tell you something, she will, but outside of that, it's all peace and quiet. In just one session, she was able to remove a sunspot that had developed on my chest. It had been bothering me for at least a year, and within days of seeing Lucy, it was gone for good. Because the procedure itself went so quickly, she threw in a mini-facial and microdermabrasion, which left my skin smooth, clean, and glowing. During this visit she also locked me into an amazingly low price for future treatments. There was not hard-sell for a package deal, just a card handed to me with prices that ensured (along with her great results) that I would be coming back. Since that first visit, I've been back for more microdermabrasion and just had my first IPL treatment for the fine broken blood vessels that have started forming around my nose. Serena Spa does not have the type of machine that blows cool air on you as it zaps your skin, but I did not find it any more painful than what I have experienced elsewhere...and that was with Lucy turning the laser up to give me quicker results. It is too early to give any meaningful feedback on how well this procedure works for my rosacea, so I will give a more complete update after completing more sessions. But I do not have any burns or blistering, which is a good indication that she knows what she is doing! Usually I would knock off one star a lack of pampering and luxury, but when I though more about it, I realized that I would much rather have an effective service, performed for at least half of the price that I would pay elsewhere, with a good chance of receiving an extra service offered at no additional charge. Came here to look up number to make another appointment (apparently Yelp has replaced my contacts list) and was surprised at the negative reviews. As others have said, this is not the most luxurious place in the world, but definitely a pleasant and value-added small business that offers great results for a very small cost. Serena Spa has definitely been one of the best I've experienced for photofacials, with the correct technology, procedures, and lots of generous extras. Other people have remarked on this, so I figured I'd mention - you need to put on a robe, taking shirt off and any straps down for access to neck and shoulders. She comes back in, covers you up, cleanses your face, does some steaming, any necessary extractions, then the IPL machine. Of all the times I've had this treatment at various places, Serena Spa is most careful to protect my eyes, which is huge. She is thorough with the IPL machine, which if you've had you know isn't the most comfortable anywhere, but it gets amazing results. After the treatment she finishes with a tailored mask. During the mask she does lots of pressure point massage on your scalp, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands, which feels great. Each experience is a little different, which I think is great because she really takes the time to tweak things a bit depending on what your skin needs that day/season. Most importantly, results have been great, which to me is most important. I'm a sucker when it comes to skincare and beauty products... I've habitually learned to delete my Lifebooker and Groupon emails as soon as I get them because I know I will buy everything I see if I don't. So this one particular day I deviated from my routine happened to click on a special for a $59 IPL facial. Of course I bought it without even knowing what IPL was... Making the appointment was easy. I was late to my appointment. Very late. Which if you know me is kind of my MO. Just as I was coming into the building Serena herself (she performs all the facials) was leaving the building. We headed back upstairs much to her dismay. Her office/treatment room is small and no frills but clean and organized. She told me the facial would be shortened. I had assumed this. The products used were minimal but she had nice technique. She did use tissues to remove some products instead of hot towels which I wasn't a fan of. She also barely did any extractions. Now to the IPL treatment... I didn't realize it was such a procedure! She covered my eyes and put a cold mask on my face. The laser itself shoots a high frequency flash into your skin. It kind of stung and every time she used it there was a brief red flash of light which I could see despite my eyes being covered. At one point I was worried I would go blind! It was definitely not the most pleasant experience but I wouldn't call it painful. She then used a soothing mask and gave me a massage which was nice. After the treatment I did have some redness in my face but no other strong side effects. I would say my skin looks brighter as a result. I don't think it did much for fine lines but that may require multiple treatments. When I gave her my voucher she not so subtly pointed to the "tip not included" note. I laughed because I would have probably done the same thing if I had boatloads of cheapo coupon clipping Lifebooker's traipsing through my salon! I spotted this place upon checking on Lifebooker deals. I always check yelp before I buy anything with a big discount. Otherwise it be a waste of time and a small waste of money (read big discount). I called directly to ask if the spa can lock the price. I was torn between two deals and was not sure which one will benefit my skin the most: IPL or laser facial. The lady nicely agreed on first part but asked me to come for a test first. I am very grateful she asked. If i would do laser it be a disaster. My skin would be in scars. Spa: It's not a luxury white-on-white spa as many are used to visit. It resemble a small studio apt but in office building with a wall to create a treatment area and a reception. However, the place is relaxing. Two beds in treatment area make me feel as I went for private session. Everything is super clean. I spot no dust even in the corners. Yep, I did looked:)) The music is not too loud and does create a nice background. Treatment: How would I best describe it. Hmmm. The strokes very gentle but confident, touch is soft. The service is not too rushed and not overly slow with a rushing at the end. I usually meet only two types of people: "barely-there-fingers. I feel and look exactly the same as when I just walked in minus the money I paid" and second: "Gosh, what i got myself into! My face is probably red and swollen already". In this spa I found a gold medium. Ps. No bad breath. No cigarette "aroma". People sometimes forget to use a hand soap and take care of breath only. Well it would work, if those fingers were not on my nose cleaning it:))) Staff: How many of us been in places were staff will say yes to anything and assure you of their greatness only at the end making you feel like you just spoke to the wall? The women who did my IPL is the kind who won't bow down but she will rely on her extensive skill that you walk out pleased. She won't sell you any extra services until you ask. Also Be prepared to be scheduled for another time as she is booked pretty tight. She is not talkative but when she does talk (ignore the accent) she stay focused on the matter without overloading you with unnecessary details. I end up once having 45 min conversation and 10 min of actual service with a repeated push to buy extra mask. - it's another spa in my review. Summary: I purchased a package and paid upfront for all at once. For the price of IPL she throw a complimentary forehead dermabrasion, mini facial and arms with shoulders massage. While doing massage she also put a mask. I was already surprised with a mini facial. The rest just made me feel special. As if we know each other for a while, when only best friends and old customers gets a bonus. I think besides doing IPl I be doing facials there as well. All services are very reasonably priced and technique is exactly how it should be. After many try and fail visits I am very knowledgeable how a certain crevice should feel like. After exploring various facial day spas from poshy uptown to hippy downtown Manhattan, Serena Spa deserves a mention for several reasons. So, here's the lowdown of my experiences so far: The midtown establishment is centrally located next to Koreatown and easy to find on Broadway. The spa itself is simplistic and clean, but not fancy by any means compared to other spas where you easily pay $100 upwards for a facial, although it does serve the basic purpose. Lucy greets you as you enter the door and you're guided into a room with two beds where the facial takes place. You have the option of changing into an adjustable cotton robe if you like. Every time I've been there to get a facial, I've had the room all to myself so privacy is not an issue. What I love about Lucy is that she genuinely takes her time to ensure that she does not rush through the process of cleansing, steaming, extracting, passing the laser on your face and putting on the cool mask at the end (which is a very relaxing and soothing experience!). Extractions are a little painful but I don't mind because she does an extremely thorough job which is what I'm after! In addition, you receive a neck/shoulder/hand massage while the mask is on - this is a treat that not all spas do during facials and do well! I also appreciate that Lucy is accommodating in terms of trying to fit the appointment in at your preferred times, even if it means staying back so I get to fit in an 8pm facial into my schedule. She also offers you special deals that are a steal if you're interested in coming back and has a range of different technology (LED/IPL/Radio Frequency/Ultrasound/Microcurrent/etc.) to target different areas of concern so just ask for her recommendation! My only piece of feedback for Lucy would be in relation to the massage. Although this is a nice treat in addition to the facial, it'd make a real difference if you can ask your customers what pressure (soft/medium/hard) they'd prefer for the brief massage. I know I love the firm pressure so if the massage is too soft, it doesn't really have any impact on my overall experience. This is such a nice service that you provide to your customers, and can definitely be something that adds to the niche of your business if done distinctly well! Staff: The lady was lovely. I had to reschedule twice and she was very accommodating and sweet. Service: I settled in for the hour basic facial and was on the street in 45 minutes. The process felt rushed in an efficient but totally un-luxurious way and I wanted that extra 30 minutes to relax. The soft mask was interesting, I've never had a facial where there was so much touching of my eyes- and the mask went over them. That made me a bit unsettled. The massage was wham bam, but included my tummy and pecs. The whole experience was a bit "eh." Surprisingly different from all the other facials I've had (facialing since 1994) so interesting in that way, but I felt uncomfortable and confused (stuff on my eyes! Literally in the middle of Herald Square, but you would never know it once you're inside their room. It is also literally a room, smaller than the size of my NYC studio. There are only two beds, separated by a small curtain. Everything was really clean and neat. Lucy was really nice and efficient and the other lady (can't remember her name) even gave me a mini massage while Lucy finished up on the other person. I asked for a microdermabrasion treatment and was surprised that it was only a few minutes of a "sucking" wand waved over my face. I'm not really sure that what I got was the legit "diamond facial" that it was supposed to be, but anyway. There was a 10 minute break after that, and it was onto one of the most painful experiences of my life - the extraction. Granted, I had tons of blockages that needed to be taken care of, and Lucy was very thorough, almost too thorough! I ended up with multiple huge pimples days after the extraction, probably because the whole process irritated and stimulated my skin so much. After extractions, this static electric thing was waved over my face and it was also a bit painful and felt funny, but was supposed to be anti-bacterial and close up my pores. With those kinds of promises, I would endure anything! At the end a nice and heavy gel mask finished up the treatment and out the door I went. The treatment was very affordable for microdermabrasion but I'm not sure if I would come back if only because I don't think the treatment suited my skin very well. However, I do think Lucy and her assistant were very professional despite the smallness of the space and would recommend her very affordable spa treatments. read more

Serena has actually become my place for facials. The service is consistently wonderful. The owner, Lucy, is really delightful. I HIGHLY recommend the 6 service package. Its a fabulous bargain. The microdermabrasion is set at a nice high setting, not the weak output I have experienced at other places. Therefore, the results are much more evident even after one go round. I went there last month and had a similar experience to Steve S. and my assessment of the situation is different (Although I did not get microdermabrasion). The office building is a bummer and so is the guard. BUT, my facial/photo facial was really good. For over an hour, I got massaged, a full facial, and a photo facial all for under $100 including tip which is pretty unheard of. They even have a membership plan that will cut costs way down if you are a frequent skin pamperer. My skin felt and looked great. It's a no frills, get it done, pay less, office experience. Awesome extractions! I had two teeny but stubborn blackheads that the estheticians at Dermalogica Academy couldn't get out during either of my last two facials. I called to ask for direction she stated that I would have to reschedule because she was booked the whole day. I got there and she took me in still so I thought that was sweet. I truly have not bought anything on Groupon before and didn't know what she was talking about in reference to a voucher. She got irritated and it made me wonder if she should be doing my facial. She did offer me water, so that was nice. She didn't explain what I was to do but figured it out. She started her service and she was polite. Gave some facts about N. Y. that I didn't know. The facial was pleasant and she explained what she was doing paying close attention to make sure my face was not burning. The overall facial was good until the end it got weird with the tax and tipping. I have to say you can't knock a person's business. I love this place. first the CON's: Its in an office building on the fifth floor. The place is small and the windows face the street so not very relaxing or serene if you want a massage. PROs: THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!! I've had the micro-derm & IPL done with Lucy numerous of time. My skin never looked better and the MD w/IPL photo facial came out to less than $100 when they have thier specials. WOW!. She does light extractions and a great arm & head massage for both and tops it off with a cooling facial gel mask. The MD & IPL are done well. You see an immmediate improvement to your skin and there was no redness or burns done to my face. She reviews your skin and give you a recommended treatment but also while the treatment is being done she aks to make sure if you are ok with the procedure (If she's going to heavy or light with her hand). I've had the MD elsewhere before where it was done very light and I barely noticed a difference. And after 2 sessions with the IPL I noticied my face was considerably firmer and brighter (not lighter) and glowy. The fact that I've been coming here every 4 weeks for the last five years say it all. I come here for Microdermabrasion, peel, and IPL. All treatments come with a mini facial, extractions, a mask after the treatment, and a little massage. The entire treatment would take about one hour. Lucy, the only aesthetician of the salon, is very experienced and knows exactly what to do. She selects which treatment is right for my skin depending on the condition of that day. She never try to sell me any additional services or products. This is a no frills type of place but the pricing is very reasonable. I highly recommend Lucy and Serena Spa. read more

Been going to Lucy for a little over a year now, actually went to see her today. Serena spa is a great place to go if you are new to facials and want to try different procedures without the expensive facial price tag. Yes, it's located in a corporate building right by Korean Town (32nd street) which doesn't give off the traditional "spa" like feel, but Serena spa is very clean and cozy. I usually get the peels or microderm. with the recommendation by Lucy depending on the condition of my skin. If you ask her she will tell you what would be best procedure for your skin. I do agree with one of the reviews that sometimes the deep cleaning and extraction of pores isn't always that clean. I LOVE LOVE her shoulder and arm massages with the heavy gel like mask towards the end. About the mask, note she puts it over your eyes, but it does not leak into your eyes. I definitely recommend this place especially Lucy to my friends. I do have to add I love that Lucy isn't always trying to sell products like other spas do. I've recently begun scrounging Groupon and Lifebooker for spa and beauty deals. I was looking for a deal on IPL photofacial that wouldn't break the bank, but also one at a reputable spa. It's also fairly easy to book an appointment at this place, which is nice when you get some places that ask you to book months in advance. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it's a small and very well-kept establishment, run by one woman as far as I could tell. Other yelpers have mentioned that she doesn't speak much English, but I think it's more of a reticence in general - she didn't seem to have trouble relaying what she wanted to communicate. In any case, you have your face washed quite thoroughly with a head massage, cold gel applied, then the IPL procedure is done, and finally she applies a mask and gives you a complimentary massage. In terms of service, I didn't find her brusque but rather just quiet, and she did make sure to get the important points across (telling me several times not to wash my face with hot water that day, for example), and the massages were decent. I wanted the IPL photofacial to treat some small broken capillaries on the lower part of my face. I mentioned those to her on the outset, and she did use a higher frequency on those areas (a bit painful) before switching to a lower frequency when I mentioned the pain. It's now the second day following the procedure, and I'm not sure when you are supposed to see results (within a few days? within a few successive treatments?) but I'm a bit disappointed not to see a difference in the capillaries. However, my face is SO SMOOTH! I'd stopped using the vitamin-A creams I usually slather on nightly, so I know the skin quality result is purely from the photofacial. (Also, I'm currently running through the stages of a head cold - which usually leaves my skin looking like crap. But instead it's rather nice.) While I didn't get the results I was hoping for, my skin is nice and for a first facial experience it was pretty good. Oh, and she also offered to lock in the LB pricing so that was pretty neat. I am in the spa industry myself and was very impressed with Lucy's work. She is very knowledgeable, her technique is great, and I got a great facial. I got the IPL facial and she made sure I knew what it entailed, describing it in detail, and then explained why she chose the collagen mask, since it was cooling. I had no idea the facial included a mask, I was excited that it wasn't an additional price. The space itself is lovely, clean, and professional. Lucy did not try to push products or upsell me. I have already made my second appointment. My only regret is that I'm moving out of NYC and won't be able to see her as regularly as I'd like. read more

I've been going to Lucy at Serena Spa for almost two years now and I have to say, my skin has never looked better! I used to break out really badly at least once a month and now that's a thing of the past. I see her regularly for a microdermabrasion and facial and other assorted treatments and I always walk out relaxed, calm and glowing. She's kind of a magician when it comes to skin treatments! Lucy can tell exactly what your skin needs and will benefit from and makes sure that you get the treatment that fits best. She never rushes and always takes her time, including massage's (THE BEST) as your mask is drying at the end. It really is an all inclusive experience. Her little oasis in busy Herald Square is always inviting, cozy and tranquil and the heated bed is AMAZING as the winter months kick in! I love that everything is spotless and it's obvious that she's always updating machines and has really great treatments available because of this. I'm always skeptical of asian spa's in nyc. Not to sound ignorant, but, the Asians make great cheap knock off's of clothings, bags, electronics, but when it comes to spas, beware. This is a perfect example. The one room Spa is located in an office complex. The lady who greets you is also the spa technician. I went for microdermabrasion (2nd time, 1st time somewhere else). She pulled a curtain in the room and there was a spa table/bed. I got on it after she asked me to only remove my shoes. About 5mins into it I asked her if I could remove my shirt (as is customary when getting facials so you don't get lotions on your clothes AND so they can give you a quick neck and shoulder massage.) The total experience felt very rushed and NOT technical. She did not examine my skin under the light as has happened at all my facials including the other time I got microderma. She didn't talk or make any recommendations. During the mask part of the process, she went behind the curtain and was loudly checking her mobile phone voicemail. All in all, it wasn't an awful experience but it certainly was not professional. I would never go back here nor recommend this place to anyone. read more

5 reasons I love Lucy: 1. Lucy is meticulous. If you arrive with blackheads, you won't leave with them. 2. Lucy has just the right touch; you walk out looking good (not red) and go back to work. 3. I don't have that much time to spend on my skin, so every time I see Lucy, she combines into one hour-long treatment: diamond microdermabrasion; extractions; lymphatic facial massage; various masques; and (the pearl in her arsenal) IPL. All of that for less than the cost of one of those crappy "no extractions" facials you get at many fancy spas. Lucy's services are no frills, all results. Just ask for what you want - no problem. 4. A dermatologist once sold me an IPL treatment which took five minutes and cost $350. Lucy has the same machine, is more careful and attentive, and charges a small fraction of that. 5. After only one IPL facial (in an ongoing series), I left with brand new skin. Lucy is friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. The IPL can be painful, but the cooling masks before and after helped, and the results were worth it--not to mention a super affordable price point (especially if you get an online deal). Lucy is fantastic. I purchased a groupon for 3 microdermabrasions. The entire procedure took about 60 minutes. I didn't quite know what to expect, but Lucy moisturized my hands wrapped them and placed them in heating mittens and then started with a facial massage and prepping my skin for the procedure. She then gave the mircrodermabrasion, which was slightly stronger than previous treatments at other spas. There were about 3 passes over the skin and then Lucy placed a light steamer by my face and then performed a few extractions followed by another small massage, lotion, a green tea mask, and then some light red and blue light therapy to kill bacteria. That's basically how I feel about Serena Day Spa. Lucy (the owner) is just the sweetest woman ever and she offers some of the cheapest and highest quality skin treatments in New York City. She knows exactly what your skin needs and will help you come up with a personalized treatment for it - at a ridiculously cheap price. I did three treatments of microdermabrasion followed by a photofacial with her for only $59 +tip a treatment. Found Serena Spa on groupon and decided to get a facial there. Its located in Korea town. The place has no frills or bells and whistles, but its clean and has a cute relaxing ambiance. Serena was very nice and professional and overall service was great. read more

Found my HG spa place. I was doing ipl facials at another place that cost nearly twice as much and was just the bare minimum. I was in and out of that place in less than ten minutes and with mediocre service. At Serena spa Lucy (the owner) lets you relax in a quiet, peaceful room with soothing music, while she meticulously cleanses, steams, and does extractions. She also did a head, arm, and hand massage on me. I brought an amazon local deal for a microdermabrasion but I asked to switch to a ipl facial and she let me do the switch with no problem. Lucy was super nice and polite and I felt very comfortable with her. While the extractions and ipl laser was no walk in the park it was nothing major I wasn't bleeding or swollen. Afterwards she gave me a card that locked in the amazon local price. So that was awesome. I paid $59 + $30 tip which makes it well under $100. Totally worth it. read more
