This is a great Dermatology practice that my husband and I have gone to for years and our adult son…read moredoes also. We are all very fair skinned and both my husband and I get yearly skin checks from Nina, PA. She's very thorough and always takes her time explaining things and answering any questions that I have. The support staff are all efficient and friendly and I don't think that I've ever waited for more than a few minutes to be called back to the exam room. We definitely recommend this practice.

That said, my appointment day went great. I had booked with this practice as a new patient because a doctor I previously saw at another practice has moved here. I couldn't get in with her as soon as one of the PAs, so elected to take that sooner appointment. I had never had a whole body skin check before, which is kind of embarrassing and negligent of me, and wanted to get that done, plus address a couple of skin concerns, both medical and cosmetic. Nina, the PA, conducted the skin check in as modest a way as possible, making the process not at all embarrassing, and my medical skin concerns were in a couple of slightly embarrassing locations and she eased my concerns about them in a straightforward, reassuring way. My cosmetic concerns were related to what I thought were sunspots on my face which she told me were actually something else, likely hereditary, and would not respond to creams etc. but I should consider laser treatment if they bother me. I liked that she was not trying to upsell the practice's services here but recommended where I could look into these services from outside, reputable providers. I did ask an offhand question about fillers and she indicated that I would need to book with my past provider, Dr. Kreizenbeck, about that, so that's something good to know/mention upfront if it's your primary purpose of booking. Overall a very good experience here and I plan to keep up with my skin care at this practice.

However, our experience with acne treatment for my daughter has been disappointing. We prefer a tiered, collaborative approach to care--starting with less intensive treatments and escalating only if necessary. Unfortunately, this practice seems to favor jumping straight to the most aggressive (and expensive) options, without much discussion or openness to alternatives. We were particularly concerned about the strong push toward using The Burgh Pharmacy, which felt more like a business partnership than a patient-centered recommendation. On two separate occasions, we explicitly asked that prescriptions not be sent to The Burgh Pharmacy so we could review them with our preferred local pharmacy first. Despite this, Whalen still sent the scripts to The Burgh Pharmacy after a couple of days--disregarding our request. When we asked questions about the prescribed treatments or suggested trying a gentler approach first, we were met with resistance and even condescension. My daughter was told by reception, "Why would you ask your pharmacist?!"--a response that dismisses the value of a team-based approach to healthcare. We believe in informed decision-making and collaborative care. Unfortunately, this practice didn't seem to welcome that mindset. While they may be a good fit for some, especially for routine dermatological care, those seeking a more personalized, stepwise approach to treatment may want to explore other options.
