Let me start by saying I would go out of my way to travel to this location simply because it's much less crowded than the closer Valley Fair location. I don't come here for customer service, I come here because I know what I want most of the time and so more often than not it's an in-&-out type of thing.
Here is my traumatic recounting of my experience from July 21st 2019 at 3:28 PM.
I spent approximately 10 minutes in the store looking for a mascara and concealer, that includes how long it took me to get in line and get checked out.
At the time there was only 1 cashier at the register checking the customer ahead of me out until MARI made her way up and called me up next. She is one of the few workers who I recognize at this location since I don't really seek out advice or assistance.
After checking me out she looks at my sister and says to her something along the lines of, "I can ring you up next". I tell her that my sister isn't buying anything, she responds still addressing my sister, "I saw you put something in your bag, I was right behind you, it's on camera."
My sister says to her "you can check my bag, I didn't take anything."
MARI says "that's not my job."
I was so caught off guard, I was upset! Without thinking twice I grab my sisters bag and dump everything onto the counter. I go through everything asking MARI, "where is it?" I even open up a food container and show her the contents. NOTHING. There was absolutely nothing in my sisters bag that she did not already own but MARI was so adamant, "it's on camera". I tell her normally she is cool, ask to see the footage and she tells me when her manager comes back. So my sister and I wait a minute or so only for MARI to come back with a phone showing a recording of my sister. She starts the video and offers a dismal apology, really only saying "sorry, it looked like she took something". The video shows my sister looking at a poorly stocked display and putting a little pillbox, something she walked into the store carrying, into her bag.
At this moment I am in shock, I go off on her, appropriately. I look her dead in the eye and tell her "you can't go throw accusations out there like that. What sort of policy allows you wrongfully accuse someone of shoplifting only to find out that YOU WERE WRONG!!! I work in retail, even if we suspect someone is shoplifting, if it's not blatant we can't just accuse them, it's not like it's coming out of your pocket. Do you expect people not to reach into their bag the entire time they're here?! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!" etc., she says "sorry, it's my job [to do this]" at this point you can see the beads of sweat forming at her hairline. My sister and I storm off and I immediately call their customer service line to tell them verbatim what just happened as it's fresh in my mind.
The single star for this review goes to the first representative I spoke to and to Helen who reached out to me after making my complaint. While no apology can make up for MARI publicly humiliating and traumatizing my sister in front of a line of customers and calling in to question my sister's character I appreciate the two reps who I spoke to after it all went down. They were sympathetic and professional and handled the uncomfortable situation MARI created for us.
What ever happened to the No Hero's Policy? I have never worked at a place that told me I can accuse people of shoplifting if I suspected it. As a matter of fact they've told us to do the opposite and let LP or someone more capable handle it or approach person in question and offer assistance. I am embarrassed for MARI and I hope she doesn't get another opportunity to take it upon herself to traumatize another customer.
TLDR: MARI took it upon herself to wrongfully accuse a customer of shoplifting only to be proven she was gravely mistaken. Stay away from MARI! Make sure you don't make any sudden movements if you don't want to be wrongfully accused of shoplifting. read more
